Max7… the latest in LED technology, a device that combats the effects of aging Max7 is the latest device used to promote collagen and counteracts against unhealthy living habits due to our life style, and the negative effects the environment has on our skin. Beautiful
Beaches N
ew Zealanders’ love affair with our beautiful beaches continues on many people’s wedding days. Whether white sandy east coast or black sand west coast beaches, they are fantastic backdrops for your wedding photos and bring to mind fun and carefree sunny days! There are of course a number of factors you need to consider if you are getting married on the beach. Page 11 : engaged : November 2009
The Weather Rain and wind can cause havoc with beach weddings. Rain, for obvious reasons, and wind, not only for the annoyance factor, but also because strong breezes can prevent guests hearing your vows. For your own piece of mind, it is worth having a back-up plan. This may be a nearby covered venue, a swathe of umbrellas or even using your reception venue for the ceremony. Check out the beach prior to the wedding day to see if there is a sheltered area that can be used on windy days. It is also worth discussing the use of microphones with your videographer to make sure your vows are able to be heard on the video! Whatever your back-up plan is it is, make sure that you have worked it out before you finalise your beach venue. This becomes important as, when you apply for your marriage licence, you need to specify exactly where you are getting married (or an alternate location) and the licence is only valid for those locations.
The Tide A great task for the groom is checking out the tide times for your beach – some beaches look a lot different with the tide in or out!
The Guests You will most definitely want your guests to have an enjoyable time at your wedding and part of this is ensuring they don’t get sunburned or chewed by mosquitoes! Consider some sort of shelter for those guests dressed in a full suit or backless dress, remembering that the guests maybe waiting on the beach for some time. Having a few bottles of sunscreen and insect repellant at the venue on the day can help guests from turning up at your reception looking like mosquito-bitten lobsters!
Page 12 : engaged : November 2009
You may wish to have a more relaxed dress code to allow both the guests and the bridal party to be more comfortable. It also reflects the more relaxed nature of the venue itself. If some of your guests are elderly, it could also pay to have some chairs on the beach as well as some umbrellas if there is no other shade. Also, when choosing the venue, ensure that there is easy access for your elderly guests.
Permits
SOME IDEAS TO COMPLETE YOUR BEACH THEME... • Dried starfish on invites or scattered on tables • Hurricane lamps with sand and candles • Fish tanks with tropical fish as centrepieces
Most beach wedding will require a permit of some description from the local or regional council. This is especially the case if you want to ensure that you have exclusive use of a certain part of the beach. You may also need to consider a special liquor licence if you wish to have drinks on the beach.
• Shells sprinkled over tables, sewn into your veil, or spread over the ‘aisle’ of your ceremony entrance • Blues and greens used for bridesmaids’ dresses and the men’s ties • ‘Sand hearts’ on the beach or saying your vows standing in a heart drawn in the sand • Favours shaped like fish or seahorses

The Gift of
Giving T
he last few months we have discussed gift registries: the advantages and disadvantages, and the different types available. These articles have focussed on presents for the bride and groom. This month we bring you something just a little different: what happens when the bride and groom want to use their good fortune to help others.
WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND KARMA CURRENCY You may remember one of the couples from our bride diaries, Bec and Phil. As part of their wedding registry they encouraged guests to purchase Karma Currency in lieu of gifts. Karma
Page 49 : engaged : November 2009
Currency, a not-for-profit independent charitable organisation, was started after the founders realised that an estimated over $1 billion was wasted on unwanted gifts. They came up with the idea of Karma Currency, charity gift certificates that can be used with your favourite charity - be it finding a cure, saving a forest or saving a child. Karma Currency calls their vouchers ‘ the most soulful, meaningful, environmentally friendly and enjoyable gift you can give’. You can feel assured that the money is going where they say it will: Karma Currency ensures that all charities that receive Karma Currency have signed legal agreements acknowledging that their directed gift will accurately reflect the nature of the goods and services they provide and they will state any terms and conditions associated with that gift. http://www.karmacurrency.com.au/about.aspx
SMILE World Vision have introduced their ‘Smiles’ gifts. With the ability to spend as little as $5 or as much as $89,950, your guests have a range of gifts to choose from. World Vision don’t box up a goat and send it to the village; the goat is a representation of the type of gift you want to give. For example, when your guests give a goat, their contribution will go towards World Vision’s agriculture and environmental work. This helps communities to learn how to grow food and to restore and improve their environment.
Page 50 : engaged : November 2009
For weddings, you can choose what type of gifts you would like on your registry and the price range. Brides and grooms set up their registry and select the gifts they want on their list. Invitations are sent to guests and they can then go online and purchase the gifts the couple have chosen. There is no limit to how many guests pick the same gift: as World Vision says ‘while you can have too many toasters, there’s no such thing as too many mosquito nets!’. http://trans.worldvision.com.au/Smiles/GiftCatalogue/Default. aspx
OXFAM UNWRAPPED Oxfam New Zealand have also recently introduced an easy way to give back. Oxfam are now offering a wedding registry option as part of Oxfam Unwrapped. This means summer bride’s and groom’s have the opportunity to make their big day a great day for poor and struggling communities around the world! Couples can put together their own wedding list of poverty-busting gifts simply by registering on the Oxfam Unwrapped website (www.oxfamunwrapped.org.nz) and then go shopping for gifts. Once they have registered they receive a confirmation email and a reference number. Friends and family can then visit their wedding list online and buy the gifts they have selected. The couple will then receive a gift card for every item purchased on the wedding list and the real item will go to people who need it most. www.oxfamunwrapped.org.nz
Page 51 : engaged : November 2009
KIVA The above websites let you give gifts which can be used to empower poorer people or to contribute to the salvation of our environment: your money can be used to give goats to a village or for planting trees. Kiva, however, is unique in that it assists you to lend money to people looking to start their own business, empowering them to create their own source of wealth. It is ‘the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website’. So how does Kiva work? On the Kiva website, you choose an entrepreneur to lend to. Funds are paid to Kiva and one of Kiva’s microfinance partners distributes the loan to your selected person. Often, Kiva’s partners will also provide training and other assistance so as to increase the person’s chance of success. The entrepreneur will use the funds in their business, keeping you updated of how they are going, and, in time, they repay the money to Kiva. Kiva then re-direct the money to the original lender so as they can re-lend to someone else in need (or withdraw their funds as required). Everyone you see on the Kiva website is a real life person. You get to choose who you would like to support. That person is someone seeking to create their own source of independence. You get to be part of their lives, not only because you loan money, but because they will provide you updates on their business and how their repayments are going. http://www.kiva.org/

Summer is just around the corner, complete with short shorts and bikinis and, for many of you, a wedding to star in! No wonder it’s about now that we start to panic! Rest assured that it can be done. New Zealand has three long-standing and well-respected weight loss experts here to help you: Weight Watchers, Sure Slim and Jenny Craig. We discuss each program’s merits alongside some real life bride stories!
WEIGHT WATCHERS Established in the early 1960s, the Weight Watchers’ program rests on ‘Four Pillars’: making smarter food choices, developing healthy habits, a supportive environment and exercise.
Page 63 : engaged : November 2009
Weight Watchers believes you should enjoy what you eat. Strategies are taught to keep the weight off for good, including making good choices, taming hunger and staying satisfied. It is an approach to eating, not a diet, and can be easily tailored for vegetarians, families, breast feeding mums, travellers - yes, and brides! Most of us have heard of Weight Watchers’ infamous points system. Each person gets a customised points allowance and you learn how to make choices to keep you satisfied and losing weight. As Weight Watchers say, ‘Not all foods are created equal - POINTS® values help you choose’. This means you can choose what you want to eat! The other well-known aspect of Weight Watchers is their meetings, and it is these meeting that are part of the core of Weight Watchers’ success. The meetings, led by a trained leader who has lost weight on the program, are important on a number of levels. Firstly, they provide support, both personal and with tools such as weight loss strategies, snacks, written information and a dose of motivation. Secondly, they allow you to monitor your progress with regular weigh-ins, one of the best ways of holding yourself accountable for your own weight loss. Weight Watchers also offers an online program for those that can’t make it to meetings. The online program includes comprehensive guides to learn how to follow the Weight Watchers approach and food plans, interactive tools to track weight and to analyse food and exercise habits, advice and recommendations for eating out, recipes and workout videos.
SURE SLIM Founded in 1996, SureSlim has a more holistic approach to weight loss: their program is designed to correct your metabolism and balance the hormones in your body responsible for weight control. At your first appointment, your consultant will arrange for you to have blood test. This test does not check your blood type or any food
Page 64 : engaged : November 2009
intolerances; it is used to note any vitamin or mineral deficiencies, glucose metabolism, and/or hormone imbalances. The blood test is used in conjunction with questions about your medical history, lifestyle, medications and food preferences to devise a personalised eating plan. The plan identifies which foods and portions you should eat to burn fat whilst still getting your nutritional requirements. By working on your glucose metabolism, and also on your production of serotonin, Sure Slim is able to help with weight loss. Sure Slim advises that ‘Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which, when stimulated, creates a remarkable sense of wellbeing. Serotonin is responsible for making us feel satisfied and content after a meal. A lack of serotonin is often responsible for food cravings. There are numerous ways serotonin production can be stimulated - nicotine, Prozac, and appetite suppressants all cause the body to release more serotonin than usual. But the most powerful and natural way to stimulate serotonin production is through food. SureSlim Eating Plans are designed to stimulate serotonin production in the correct amount at the right times, to help you lose weight and not feel hungry.’ The eating plan for Sure Slim clients is three balanced meals a day. There are no pre-packaged foods, diet shakes, or drugs, and there is flexibility over what you eat and when. Encouragement and advice are available through Sure Slim’s personal Weight Loss Coaches.
JENNY CRAIG Lastly, we have Jenny Craig. Jenny Craig has been running since 1983. They do not just deliver a Program: they are ‘active proponents of their clients’ quest to change their lives for the better’. Jenny Craig believes that the key to success is about changing bad eating habits and replacing them with something more constructive. Food should not be seen as an enemy!
Page 65 : engaged : November 2009
The Jenny Craig Medical Advisory Board has helped design the program so that the focus is on health, energy, self-esteem, confidence and getting the most out of life. This program, SkillPower™, is not based on a fad diet, it teaches people to think about weight loss in three main areas: Food, body, and mind. Their goal is to teach clients to have a healthy relationship with food, to build a more active lifestyle with physical activity, and to achieve a balanced approach to living. With respect to the food component, Jenny Craig looks at our personal relationship with food and how or why we eat. This allows them to pinpoint any bad habits and give you the tools to change those bad habits into good ones. To support this, pre-prepared meals are available that are nutritionally balanced and allow you to learn portion control and healthy eating habits. A fantastic choice for those who don’t have the time or skills to cook! Jenny Craig provides back-up through their personal consultants. You can even get the food home delivered! No matter which program you choose, remember that healthy eating is a lifestyle choice and will work much more effectively that any ‘diet’. And to really loose those kilos, make sure you back it up with some exercise! REAL LIFE STORIES Over the next few pages, we have three beautiful brides who each lost an amazing amount of weight - their stories are inspirational!
Page 66 : engaged : November 2009
Rachel & Greg
Real Bride
Rachel Newman and Greg Feeney were married at the Tai Tapu Church 25 April 2006. This date was chosen because it the five year anniversary of their first date! Rachel’s children, Mitchell and Olivia (10 and 8 respectively at the time of the wedding), were involved in the wedding, with Mitchell walking his mum down the aisle and Olivia acting as bridesmaid. Best man, Leon Frapwell, and matron of honour, Karina Dickson made up the wedding party.
Rachel describes how she met Greg: ‘The story of how we met was a funny one. I was out with a few work colleagues at a local bar. On my way to the bathroom I was stopped by a man who asked me, ‘would I kiss this man?’. He looked cute so I thought, ‘why not’ and did. That man that I kissed ended up being my husband!
Page 67 : engaged : November 2009
Rachel enrolled at Weight Watchers prior to the wedding. Date of wedding: 25 April 2006 Date of joining Weight Watchers: 16 March 2005 Start weight: 93.8kgs End weight:63.7kgs current weight 65kgs What was your motivation for losing weight. Was it just the wedding or a lifestyle choice? There were a number of factors that contributed to me saying I needed to lose weight. But in the end my self esteem felt so low I
Before
After Page 68 : engaged : November 2009
wanted help. So I joined Weight Watchers. I guess you could say I had been contemplating joining for several months but I wasn’t ready. I heard a number of colleagues talk about their wives joining Weight Watchers and also friends. It wasn’t until I read the Women’s Weekly article about Jo Cotton which inspired me finally do something about my weight. When I saw the stunning photos I decided I wanted to look like her, so I cut the coupon out and called the 0800 number to find the nearest meeting. Also, my partner and I had an argument mainly about how I felt about my weight, which ended in me saying that I was going to join Weight Watchers. He told me I wouldn’t do it. This motivated me even more to join and succeed! When I joined, my partner had asked me to marry him but we hadn’t set a wedding date. My motivation was for more of a lifestyle choice and self esteem to make myself feel better. Did you find the upcoming wedding motivated you to keep with the program? Absolutely, although I had a personal desire to get to my goal weight. After meeting a successful lifetime member it made me realise how achieving this goal would give me another lease on life. After I had lost about 15kgs I had a lot of people telling me how good I looked and I didn’t have to lose any more. That motivated me even more as I thought if I looked good now, I will look even better when I got to my goal weight. I knew my husband-to-be was happy with me no matter what weight I was as he had asked me to marry him when I was bigger but I wanted to feel good naked! Why did you choose Weight Watchers? After reviewing what I had done in the past and talking to a number of people, including fitness experts, I decided I needed something else to help me change my lifestyle because what I had been doing wasn’t working. Page 69 : engaged : November 2009
I had heard and read about a number of success stories from people who had used Weight Watchers and after reading Jo Cotton’s story I decided that I would join. I didn’t have an understanding of how my body worked and how eating certain foods affected my metabolism. After some investigation I decided that with my current lifestyle and finances Weight Watchers was perfect for me. Page 70 : engaged : November 2009
What was the best part of the program? The best part of the programme is the simplicity of understanding what foods you can and can’t eat. There is flexibility to still enjoy the foods you like without having to go without. I think this is a real key to being successful. The programme uses normal everyday food and teaches you how to eat healthily. The hardest? One of the biggest feelings/thoughts that anyone needs to overcome is trying not to eat some of the foods you used to love. I am continually telling myself I don’t need certain foods. When I do eat them now I usually only have a couple of bites as I don’t like the taste. Don’t get me wrong there are still plenty of foods I do like which are hard to avoid, but I keep those as treats. When it is raining outside or I am feeling tired it is sometimes hard to go for a walk but I remind myself how it makes me feel so I make the effort and go. Which I am always pleased I do afterward. Did you include exercise? If so, what and how much? Before joining Weight Watchers I tried to walk regularly during my lunch breaks but I would often find excuses not to go, e.g. ‘I’m too busy or I need to get a job finished’. Occasionally, I would go swimming and bike to work. After joining Weight Watchers I now walk everyday and make it a priority. It is scheduled in my diary which I make other appointments around. During my weight loss I would normally walk twice a day, once during my lunch break and then after dinner at night. I never let the weather control when I would go. I would put on a coat and go anyway. I now walk around 4-5 times a week.
Page 71 : engaged : November 2009
Any tips for our readers? ‘Measure and Record’ I would say was one of the best tips for anyone wanting to lose weight. My partner reminded me that before I joined Weight Watchers I had told him that I didn’t want to start weighing my food and writing down what I ate each day. But I now know this is an important part of being successful. By realising how important portion sizes are and what the points values are for each portion I started to understand what I needed to eat each day. Also realising I didn’t have to fill my plate to feel contented was a real mind-set to overcome. Using the points system and recording what I ate each day I found I could master this habit. I continue to weigh my food periodically to ensure the sizes do not increase. The most important thing I have learned throughout this journey is that you have to keep things real. The changes that I have made for life are the ones that are sticking. Also take one day at a time – don’t throw everything away just because of one bad day. If I did have a bad week I would look at what I ate that week and the following week I would change what I ate. Keeping my diet new and exciting helped throughout the journey and even today. The knowledge I have gained about food has helped me get a complete understanding of how my body works. I said to someone, I couldn’t believe after 32 years of life I had to be taught what to eat. But this knowledge has proven invaluable.

Real Bride
Kylie & Andy Kylie and Andy Morrell went to school together about 13 years ago. They had always moved in the same circles at school and had often caught each other’s eye but nothing eventuated. About four years ago they bumped into each other at a restaurant in Wellington, then started dating.
In April 2008 they went to Queenstown for a trip solely for the purpose of Kylie doing the bungy jump – he had brought for me for Christmas. These two always like to challenge each other and give each other daring things to do as a present! So far Kylie have given Andy a jump off the Sky Tower and a sky dive; he returned the favour with the biggest bungy in NZ! While down in Queenstown on that trip Andy proposed to Kylie in the gardens on a wee bridge with no one around. Kylie describes it as ‘just the most still night!’ She happened to be at the time commenting on the stars and how they were so much brighter in Queenstown and when she turned around, saw that Andy had stopped and was on one knee! He stumbled with the words and in the end just pulled out the ring – that said it all!
Page 73 : engaged : November 2009
They got married on Petone beach on 14 March 2009, starting with drinks and nibbles on the beach under a marquee before heading upstairs to the Jetty Cafe for thier reception. Everything went so well and they had a few surprises along the way: Kylie’s Dad had made a rimu heart out of the recycled rimu from their recent renovations and let off fireworks later on from the beach. They also surprised everyone with a choreographed dance! Kylie says they had such a great day and enjoyed celebrating it with their friends and family; many of whom have since told them that their wedding was one of the best ones they have been to! Always fantastic to hear! Date of wedding: 14 March 2009 Date of joining Jenny Craig: 19 April 2008 Start weight: 74.9kgs End weight:67.3kgs What was your motivation for losing weight. Was it just the wedding or a lifestyle choice? I had decided I wanted to get more fit and loose a few kilos a few weeks before going to Queenstown and getting engaged. The wedding was just the extra motivation I needed to make sure I stayed on track. Did you find the upcoming wedding motivated you to keep with the program? Yes, definitely. That and the fact I brought my dress which was a little firm!
Page 74 : engaged : November 2009
Why did you choose Jenny Craig? I had always liked the idea that the meals were mostly prepared which made it easy for me. Also my mum had a lot to do with it: she has done the programme too and found it really good. What was the best part of the program?
Before
The fact that I didn’t have to think about my next meal – which meant I wasn’t searching for something to fill the gap which might not have been the best food choice! The hardest? Keeping to the diet when I went out! I am very social and enjoy good food and wine, so that was the hardest part. Did you include exercise? If so, what and how much? Yes, I regularly went to the gym, swam and walked; probably about 4–5 times a week.
After
Page 75 : engaged : November 2009
Any tips for our readers? Make sure you have something to motivate you other than just losing weight, like an upcoming event! Make sure to experiment with the food – make it in different ways, add to it – don’t be afraid to try something new to keep it interesting! Being newly engaged, the first thing a bride thinks about is the dress. Everybody wants to shine on their day so I set out to get fit and to lose weight. I wanted to make sure I looked beautiful on what I knew would be one of the biggest days of my life. We didn’t want a long engagement so a little help was needed. That was where Jenny Craig came in. My Jenny Craig Consultant was fabulous; she encouraged me, reminded me of my goals and celebrated my successes. During this journey with my weight I was actively trying to plan my big day as well. Everything went superbly and I got to my goal - my dress fitted perfectly and I know by the look on the face of my husband-to-be and our wonderful guests that I looked a million dollars! I know that I couldn’t have achieved what I did without the help of Jenny Craig.

Louise & Jason
Real Bride
Music teacher Louise and Jason O’Neill got married in 2008 as their ten year anniversary was in May 2009 and they thought they should make it formal! They chose the 19th of December because Ken Ring (in his Predict Weather Almanac) said it would be fine and he was right! They had always decided that they wouldn’t have a formal engagement, and would make the wedding the celebration. However, Jason had other ideas. In May 2007 they went to Rangatoto for a picnic lunch. Once they found a nice spot they sat down and got comfortable. Next thing Louise knew Jason was next to her on his knee with a ring!!
The wedding was at Settlers Country Manor in Waimauku, north of Kumeu. They loved the venue and Louise says ‘everything went so smoothly, the staff were really professional and the food was yummy!’ Louise and Jason tried to include as many friends as possible in their ceremony and reception. Jason’s brother-in-law kindly drove Louise to the venue in his classic Rolls Royce, one of her father’s oldest friends was their celebrant, a colleague and friend of hers was their official photographer and two of Louise’s music students performed during Page 77 : engaged : November 2009
the ceremony – Erica played the bagpipes as Louise walked up the aisle and Sam sang three songs while they signed the wedding certificate. This all helped make their day even more personal and special. Date of wedding: 19 December 2008 Date of joining Sure Slim: 31 March 2008 Start weight: 79kg End weight: 60kg What was your motivation for losing weight. Was it just the wedding or a lifestyle choice? The main motivator was the wedding. However, I’d been unhappy with the way I looked for a long time. I put a lot of weight on after having a nasty skiing accident and was on crutches for about 4 months.
Before
After Page 78 : engaged : November 2009
Did you find the upcoming wedding motivated you to keep with the program? It was certainly a firm goal date! But really, it was the ongoing support from Sure Slim and my husband that made the real difference. Why did you choose Sure Slim? I really liked the idea of a nutritionally centred programme that’s a change in lifestyle, rather than a programme where I had to buy meals or drink shakes – I’m all about real food! What was the best part of the program? The weekly meetings – just the right amount of support versus constructive criticism. The hardest? No lollies, no alcohol, no salt and vinegar chips – and getting used to measuring the correct amounts of things all of the time. Did you include exercise? so, what and how much?
If
Yes, I walked for around 40 minutes, three times a week. I also ski regularly. Any tips for our readers? If you want a balanced, supportive programme Sure Slim is right for you!

Fitness
THE END IS
NIGH...
By Rachael Corcoran
We began our first article in this series (that aims to have you looking and feeling outstanding for your big day), by describing the process of becoming fitter, healthier, slimmer, or whatever else you want to achieve as a ‘journey’. One of the things you may have noticed about most of the journeys you embark upon, is that your end destination is, most often, predetermined. This helps on a number of fronts, including that you can plan a number of things, such as mapping your route, time it will take, items required for the trip, avoiding possible hazards, and what you are going to do when you get there. I am going make the assumption here, that for most of you, your wedding day is ‘goal end date’, the date that you are aiming to have lost 5 or 10kgs for, and to be looking and feeling your best.
Page 81 : engaged : October 2009
It is here that I believe you need to ‘up the ante’ somewhat. I don’t think I’d be far wrong in saying that most people have wanted to lose a few kilos at some point in time. But those whom make the best start, and ultimately are more successful than others in achieving the weight loss, tend to think about the goal in a slightly different manner. They think about something that really inspires them, so they actually look forward to doing it! I don’t know about you, but personally I find the statement ‘I want to/need to lose 5kgs’ the complete opposite of inspiring. Instead, it automatically conjures up a feeling of dread. Dread of the hard work that it will take and the possible sacrifices. “Oh no, no more chocolate and wine while I watch TV at night, and long, hard, sweaty workouts’. So here is what I’d like you to do. I’d like you to put as much joy and inspiration into that goal as possible. To do that you need to make it come ALIVE!! It needs to have as much movement, excitement, realism and feeling in it that you can possibly muster. Some of you are likely to have done this when you were a little girl, when you dreamed about your wedding day with a handsome prince, when you were wearing your gown and glass slippers, and you rode away in your horse drawn carriage, just like in all the story books. If this is you, don’t you remember how excited that vision made you feel? Given that you have grown up, your prince may or may not be exactly as you pictured, and the gown may have changed from the Cinderella version with a number of petti-coats underneath, to a more elegant and sophisticated look – but the process remains the same. Spend some time day dreaming. You have probably begun the actual wedding planning process, so utilise the elements you already know about. Picture yourself looking stunning in the dress you want, visualise
Page 82 : engaged : October 2009
how it makes you feel and that it fits you perfectly, think about your guests remarking on how fabulous you look, and the look on your wonderful man’s face when he turns to see you walking towards him. What sort of day is it? Are you in a church or in a garden? What you need to do here is fill in as many of the blanks as you can. You could even go to the extent of imagining you and your girlfriends getting dressed, right through to the way it feels when you leave with your new husband, and what he says to you about how you look after you have slipped away together. The more movement and feeling of joy and happiness you can put into this picture, the more likely you are to want to achieve that 5 kg weight loss. It has now become a goal worth going for, and a goal that will help you get through the occasional rough patch.
Rachael Corcoran is Head Coach and Director of kHiSSt Health Coaching. As well as contributing articles, Rachael is a motivational speaker, her main subject material being body image, and inspiring health. www.healthcoaching.co.nz
So take some time now, go back to day-dreaming like you did when you were young. Enjoy yourself. Your journey now has an absolutely fabulous destination!!

Beauty Beach on the
Most beach weddings are held in the height of summer. This season brings with it a number of factors that can have a negative effect on your skin’s health and radiance. So what can we do to prepare our skin for summer beach weddings?
THE BIG QUESTIONS It is important to remember that the skin is our largest organ and, as such, it requires the most attention. Ask yourself the following to see if you are doing everything you can for your skin:
Page 95 : engaged : November 2009
The first question is what are you doing to feed your skin, both internally and externally? Most of us know the saying ‘you are what you eat’. And it’s true - buying and eating healthy food is very important as everything we put into our body comes out in our skin, so we really need to be conscious of what we are feeding it. The second question is whether you are drinking enough water? Dehydration is one of the most common causes of ageing skin so we need to hydrate the skin from the inside and outside. The third question is are you exercising enough? Exercise, whether going to the gym, playing sport or going for a long walk, is highly beneficial to the skin as it increases blood flow and flushes out toxins, giving us that much sought after healthy glow.
INSIDE AND OUT As well as carefully monitoring your food and water intake and the amount of exercise you do, there are a couple of products you can use to ensure your skin is in tip-top condition for summer and the big day. We all know that Vitamin C can be taken internally; however many people do not realise that you can
also apply it externally. Vitamin C is in fact one of the most widely used skin care ingredients. The variety of skin rejuvenation / anti-wrinkle products with vitamin C is staggering. Do these products work? Do their claims have any substance? The situation is a little complicated. On one hand, vitamin C does possess definite, scientifically validated merits for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation. On the other hand, many vitamin C products do not work as they do not contact enough vitamin C (research as shown that a minimum of 10% vitamin C is needed to be effective). So while vitamin C is scientifically proven as being effective in the fight against wrinkles, fine lines and hyperpigmentation, when taken orally, only a very small amount of this precious skin-saving vitamin actually reaches the skin. And because the body cannot manufacture or store vitamin C, the skin often lacks this essential nutrient. That’s why Paul from The Pureskin Clinic recommends applying a daily dose of vitamin C to the skin. It is an essential part of the anti-oxidant brigade to protect skin against free radical assault, from the atmosphere and from ultra violet light – your very own natural sun inhibitor! Paul believes that it is the most important product that anyone can apply to the skin. He has found that their vitamin C Serum
Page 96 : engaged :November 2009
has created amazing results for many of their clients. Omega 3 is another nutrient that is very important to the body. It supports the functionality of the body’s skin cells and helps to produce new healthy ones. Again, it can be taken either internally or applied to your body externally. But before taking or applying any available product, beware: currently there are many products on the market which claim to contain health promoting ‘omega 3’, but contain only α-linolenic acid (ALA), not EPA or DHA. These products contain mainly higher plant oils and must be converted by the body to create DHA and are therefore considered less efficient.
PROTECTION BEFORE AND ON YOUR WEDDING DAY As we know, the sun here in New Zealand is very harsh on the skin and so we need to take more care than normal, especially in summer. Sunblock is a must, both on the day and every day! Being in the sun all day at a wedding can make us hot and cause perspiration. So you will need to make sure that the sunblock you are wearing stays on and does not slip when perspiring. Zinc dioxide
and titanium oxide are the only two ingredients that have, through numerous studies, been proven to be effective sunblocks and are natural. Therefore these two ingredients are very good for the skin so check if your sunblock has them! Pureskin Clinic has two great sunblocks – tinted and un-tinted both containing zinc dioxide and titanium oxide and, as an added bonus, vitamin C. A lot of skin damage is done in our late teens to early 30s, so using a good sun block is essential. It is a great way of protecting your face from the harmful damage and helps you to keep looking more youthful.
REGULAR TREATS Lastly, having regular facials will improve your skin’s tone, texture and fine lines. All this leaves you with a younger looking skin – just perfect for those wedding photos! They will also allow you to wear less makeup, as your skin will be more even in tone and texture. Having to wear less makeup on that hot summer day for your wedding would definitely be a plus! Always check with a professional beauty therapist if you are using the right product for you.

Being
Yourself
T
his month Engaged talks to the inspiring and vivacious young fashion designer Jenny Walker of YBe Fashion Design Gallery, located at Point Chevalier beach, Auckland. With formal fashion school training in Canada and as a past winner of the Westfield Style Pacifica ‘Supreme Award’, Jenny is one of New Zealand’s innovative young fashion designers. Her work is inspired by nature, art and culture and is created with her client’s personality and background in mind.
Page 101 : engaged : November 2009
E:
Firstly, a question about your business name. What does YBe stand for?
J:
All of my life I have had a philosophy about life and connecting people. Life is about understanding who we are and why we are here – Why be? (YBe). As a fashion designer I look to help people tell their stories and express themselves through their clothing.
YBe someone else, when you can just be yourself.
E:
Tell us more about your background ….
J:
On completion of my Arts and Languages degree from Auckland University, I worked firstly in Queenstown and then Japan, where I taught English in Tokyo and Kyoto for 2 years. I then travelled to Canada to complete my formal fashion design training in Vancouver.
During my course, I created a ‘tiki dress’ using fabric surface techniques. Over 200 hours of work went into the dress, which was inspired by my New Zealand background. On returning to New Zealand, my ‘tiki dress’ was accepted in the Westfield Style Pasifika competition and subsequently won the ‘Traditionally Inspired’ category and was also the ‘Supreme Award Winner’.
E:
What was the prize and was this the dress that Keisha Castle-Hughes wore during Oscar week when she was nominated for ‘Whale Rider’?
J:
The prize for winning the Supreme Award was a visit to the Versace Fashion Empire in Milan and an international buying trip through Europe. It was inspiring to be in Milan – the home of Italian fashion and to know that I had the talent to be invited to Versace - the best known fashion house in the world.
Yes, Keisha had been nominated for the Best Actress award. I called Liz Mitchell, who was doing all of Keisha’s dresses for the week of the Oscars, and asked if there was any chance of Keisha wearing my dress, as I knew it would be perfect for her. Keisha subsequently wore the ‘tiki dress’ to the Independent Spirit Awards the night before the Oscars. She looked amazing and the tiki dress
Page 102 : engaged : November 2009
featured prominently in both international and New Zealand media.
The tiki dress can be viewed at my YBe store at Point Chevalier Beach.
E:
After winning at Style Pasifika and the ‘premier’ of your dress overseas, you set your sights on opening your own store and now have an amazing space near the end of Point Chevalier Road.
J:
I love my shop! I have been working towards opening this store since working in Japan and, naturally, throughout my fashion design course in Canada. Turns out dreams do come true: here I am! Point Chevalier Beach has been a perfect place both creatively and business-wise for my first store and future plans.
In addition to my YBe fashion label, the store also incorporates a

Page 104 : engaged : November 2009
design gallery showcasing work by a number of talented people on a guest basis, including casual yoga wear, hats, scarves, art work and jewellery. All of the artists are local community artists, including perfumer Linda Lucy Haines. E.
Do you design and make garments for weddings?
J:
Yes, I love custom design and wedding work. I provide custom-designed clothing, including wedding dresses, bridesmaids’, flower girls’, mother-of-the-bride and groom’s and groomsmen’s outfits.
E:
What is your philosophy on wedding design and clothing?
J:
I love to tell a story about the couple through their clothing. When I am designing something, I sit down with the client and connect with them: I find out who they are, their personality and background, what they are trying to express. The clothing is then custom fitted, so it becomes highly individual and personalised – the client can be sure that the clothing is uniquely theirs and tailored to fit correctly!
Being part of the bride and groom’s (or bridesmaid’s or mother-ofthe-bride’s) journey to find something that truly expresses who they are is immensely inspiring and rewarding for me. We work together to make something special, creating a sense of unity through the entire wedding party, this helps make the day special for their bride and groom and their future life together.
E:
The Kowhai wedding dress you created is really unique and a great representation of how you like to design clothes for individuals. Tell us the story behind it.
J:
The kowhai dress was designed for a New Zealander getting married in Italy. She wanted something that reflected her heritage to remind her of home. The dress was shaped like a kowhai flower, it had hand made kowhai flowers and leaves sewn on to the dress. At the time of the wedding, the kowhai flowers were blossoming in New Zealand – this meant that any guests not able to attend the wedding could think of the couple whenever they saw the trees in bloom here.
I have photos of the dress and other wedding outfits I have created in the YBe store. Couples are welcome to meet and discuss their needs with me.
Page 105 : engaged : November 2009
E.
What is YBe currently offering that sets you apart from other fashion stores?
J:
I have just introduced my latest innovation to the YBe collection, the new ‘obi panel’ range, a fashion accessory that is a fusion of Asian and Pacific cultures.
Obi panels are designed to be worn over jeans, pants, skirts or dresses. We sell unique pre made obi-panels but can also tailor-make to tell the story of the wearer. The Obi-panel range can be seen in store.
E.
What is coming up for YBe Fashion?
J:
In early November, I will be returning to Japan for a short visit. Japanese culture has always provided me with inspiration and many of my designs feature Japanese and Pacific influences. I plan to work on my next fashion collection during my Japanese visit. A YBe fashion show will launch the new collection in mid 2010.
I have also recently combined my teaching and fashion background, to offer a series of fashion inspired classes including ‘screen printing’ and ‘fashion illustration’. The classes, which run over three weeks, are lots of fun – befitting the YBe philosophy.
Details on the new collection, fashion show and future art and fashion classes will be posted on the YBe website- www.ybe.co.nz
We highly recommend a visit to YBe Fashion Design Gallery and to meet Jenny Walker at 506 Point Chevalier Road, Point Chevalier – call in, take a look at the amazing clothes on display and catch some of her infectious YBe energy! Jenny returns from Japan on 14th November and will be available for personal design consultations for your summer wardrobe or upcoming wedding plans.
