There is a dangerous knowledge gap right now in the safety game, one that Safety HQ is looking to plug with experience, constantly updated learnings and a network of experts around the nation. By Chris Sheedy
T
here are very good reasons for the many standards and regulations around workplace safety, and they don’t always have to do with working at height or with spinning blades. Take, for instance, the fact that staff wearing hi-visibility shirts with reflective tape can become endangered during scenarios in which the tape separates from the shirt. This has happened in the past—as a worker was exiting a truck the reflective tape snagged on the door and resulted in the driver breaking his leg. Troy McNally, Safety HQ Supplier and Managing Director of MAK Workwear and KM Workwear, says he has heard of several situations in which injuries have occurred as a result of loose reflective tape catching on hazards while the worker is carrying tools or exiting a vehicle. “Because of this we have developed a new range of reflective clothing, called KM Workwear, in which the reflective tape is applied to the garment by patented heat transfer,” McNally says. “This eliminates the risk of the sewing or the tape becoming a hazard for the wearer and it makes a more comfortable garment.” It’s a handy reminder of why a total safety solution—including the very latest advice, clothing and equipment—offered by a specialist safety retailer such as Safety HQ, is absolutely vital on a worksite and when working elsewhere, including around the home. If reflective tape can cause issues, imagine what other dangers lurk around worksites. “Most of our competitors don’t have any knowledge or experience in the safety game,” says Tony Stackpole, General Manager of Safety HQ. “That’s a serious problem. They can advise on the right safety equipment from technical gear like height safety and respiratory to basic gear like work wear and footwear. “If you walk into a tool shop and ask about site safety, they’d have no idea about regulations and products needed to keep the worker safe,” Stackpole adds. “Our members can offer total advice
around safety solutions for an entire business.”
Better insurance than insurance
Stackpole says, is that they know the right questions to ask. In his past career he has been in tool shops when customers have approached the counter and mentioned they are looking for a respirator to wear as they weld galvanised steel. Rather than being invited in to a discussion around their needs, they have instead simply been pointed to an aisle containing a range of respirators. Other times he has seen customers requesting hearing protection for a specific job, and being sold a set of ear muffs without even being asked the job they were doing. This sort of behaviour in retail is dangerous for the purchaser and potentially damaging for their employer. “Safety HQ members will always find out what exactly you are doing before making a recommendation,” he says. “If you’re after hearing protection, they need to know what you’re doing so they can match the decibel rating. If you’re cutting, they need to know what you’re cutting before recommending the exact type of respirator that is needed. Our guys ask all the right questions before making any recommendation because there are different safety concerns, regulations, standards and types of safety equipment for every job.”
Businesses are now acutely aware of the damage that can be done by workplace injury. It’s not just loss of labour or time, but also reputation. It often leads to legal issues for management and directors. The right advice can lead to a safe and comfortable workplace but the wrong advice, or no advice at all, can critically damage a business. They come together for two group conferences every year in order to share specialist learnings and have their knowledge updated. They also have regular contact with peak safety organisations, and they attend training sessions run by suppliers and compliance experts.
