“The achievement of working class pupils could be significantly enhanced if we systematically apply all that is known about parental involvement.”
Engage, Enthuse, Inspire
‘The Impact of Parental Involvement, Parental Support and Family Education on Pupil Achievement and Adjustment: A Literature Review.’ Desforges C., with Abouchaar, A., (2003). DfES Research Report 433, ‘Parents who are more involved in their adolescents’ schooling, regardless of parents’ gender or educational level, have offspring who do better in school, irrespective of the child’s gender, ethnicity or family structure’. (Bogenschneider 1999 p.729)
We know from well-established research, the power that Parental Engagement has to raise pupil achievement. The Sutton Trust / Education Endowment Foundation Toolkit (2012), which explores the most effective strategies for raising pupil attainment, estimates that this impact can be as much as 25% in any one academic year.
Traditionally, schools have been willing to leave the development of Parental Engagement to the whim of parents. Information has been sent home, phone calls and visits made. Inevitably, this has led to what at best can be called a luke-warm or haphazard response from parents. The usual pattern of response to this approach has been a spectrum which ranges from those parents who have personal experience of higher education doing their best to support their child’s learning in the home, to those parents who for a number of reasons lack the confidence and skills needed to engage. Ofsted’s new inspection framework makes it quite clear that schools can no longer use the phrase ‘hard-toreach’ as an excuse for not engaging with parents cross the spectrum. Experience tells us that for many parents the ‘hard-to-reach’ label more accurately describes their experience of communicating with their child’s school. Schools need to adopt an effective, integrated strategy that enables meaningful, manageable and sustainable Parental Engagement, enabling impact to be measured against targeted learning outcomes.
ENGAGEMENT IN EDUCATION LTD engage, enthuse, inspire OUR FOUR SIMPLE COST-EFFECTIVE STEPS Step 1 Prior to our full-day introductory visit, we read through reports, policies and other documents that are indicators for your school so that on the day of our visit we have an insight into how your school approaches Parental Engagement. We spend the day talking to school leaders, other members of staff, and naturally some pupils and parents, using our experience to form an independent view of your school’s current approach to Parental Engagement. At the end of the day we discuss our findings with SLT and governors. Step 2 Over the next two weeks we prepare two papers. The first is a written report on your school’s current approach to Parental Engagement, exploring strengths and weaknesses. The second presents a variety of recommendations that allow you to choose a strategy that allows you to develop Parental Engagement in a way that best suits the context of your school. As well as looking at attitudes, systems and practices that act as enablers or barriers to Parental Engagement, we will also include options of how best to utilize your existing MIS and learning platform to Improve Parental Engagement. Options will range from adapting what you already have to a radical redesigning of your school’s approach to Parental Engagement. These documents will be available for you to use within your Ofsted evidence file. Step 3 We return to your school to discuss our report with you in detail and to plan how and when the agreed Interventions will take place. Regardless of the strategy you choose, we will provide for you the training and training materials for governors, staff, pupil and parents. Working together with your SLT we will decide upon success criteria for the interventions and how they can be measured. We will also provide the text for new policies arising from t he intervention and help you amend existing policies that will inevitably by impacted upon. Again, documentation will be provided for your Ofsted evidence file. Step 4 intervention delivery over the specified time to include all training and materials, together with implementation evaluation tools enabling SLT and governors to be kept informed of progress and impact.
