ABOUT ME

1 RIVERVIEW TERRACE RESTAURANT

The Riverview Terrace Restaurant is a historically significant building that sits on the site of Taliesin East, Frank Lloyd Wright’s personal estate located in Spring Green, WI. As of today, the building operates as the Taliesin Visitor’s Center.

The client, the Taliesin Preservation Commission, expressed desires to bring in more revenue to the building while also making it more appealing to tourists. These were the main goals for this project.

For this project, we worked in teams of two to rehabilitate the Visitor’s Center and return it to its original purpose as the Riverview Terrace Restaurant. Each team chose a period of significance based on character defining features, both past and present, as well as based off of Wright’s original intentions for the site.

CURRENT INTERIOR

PERIOD OF SIGNIFIGANCE

As a group, we chose 1958 as our period of significance because it is the last year that Frank Lloyd Wright produced drawings detailing his intentions for the Riverview Terrace Restaurant. The space features elements that are characteristic of Wright’s design style as it was at the end of his career and life. We wanted to return the space to its original function as a restaurant so that the space can be properly used and follow Wright’s intentions. The restaurant will also be a source of revenue for the Taliesin Preservation Commission, which they had expressed was the main goal in the rehabilitation of this space.

CONCEPT

Frank Lloyd Wright’s biggest inspiration in all of his designs is the Japanese wood block print. In order to bring the influence of the Japanese wood block print into the Taliesin Visitor’s Center, the space will turn its focus to order, structure, simplification, and natural simplicity, which are all elements Wright saw as significant in Japanese art. Order will be brought to the space by creating a cohesive feeling throughout since the current spaces feel disjointed and closed off. The entire space will be opened up and fitted with movable partitions so that the spaces flow together but can also be partially closed off for spatial organization. Natural and local limestone will be used in the space to connect the structure to the community and the nature around it. The space will be simplified by removing the existing reception desk making the area will feel more organic and inviting. Finally, the space will be outfitted with examples of Japanese works of art to reflect what Wright loved to display most in his home. Overall, the space will emphasize natural simplicity and the “elimination of the insignificant”, one of the driving phrases behind Wright’s work.

COCKTAIL BAR

The cocktail bar is located at the entrance to the restaurant, and serves as a space where guests can enjoy drinks while they wait to dine. This space features a central bar with floating glass shelves to display alcohol. There is also seating along the side of the room where guests can get a closer view at the displayed Japanese art prints.

FIREPLACE LOUNGE

The fireplace lounge is centered around the fireplace Frank Lloyd Wright designed for the space. This space serves as a casual soft seating area where guests can sit and converse with one another. There is also a portable bar that serves guests in this area with cocktails or coffee. Traditional Japanese tea is also served in this area.

2 MODULARITY: INTERNATIONAL STUDENT HUB

The Landscape Architecture Building is located on Iowa State University’s campus, and it currently serves as extra space for the Agronomy and Journalism departments. For this project, we as a group were instructed to transform the underutilized space and turn it into a hub for international students on campus to cater to their specialized needs.

Our goals for the project were to create an inclusive space to allow for ease of collaboration. International students thrive in environments that feel welcoming, so we also wanted to put interculturalism and diversity as the main focus of the space. We aimed to promote these ideas through modular design that is flexible for each of the users needs.

CONCEPT

In order to give international students the resources they need to cater to their success, Modularity aims to create a learning environment that is flexible so it can fit in with the needs and lives of the students at any time. The space will implement modular furniture that is movable so that spaces can be transformed based on the current needs for the space. Modularity also aims to create environments where both students and faculty feel comfortable and in control in their environment which will promote a safe and relaxing space. A natural color palette will also be used throughout the space along with plenty of natural light so that users can feel unencumbered by the large space. The layout will feature an open plan to increase the feelings of spatial familiarity and comfort.

3 REDValentino Flagship Store

For this project, we were asked to transform the current Fendi Flagship store located in Rome, Italy into a new flagship store for a luxury fashion brand. The brand my partner and I chose to design for is REDValentino. This branch of the Valentino company is aimed at designing whimsical yet edgy clothing for young men and women. The outcome for this project resulted in us learning more about luxury design as well as how to create a luxury experience within a space.

Our goals for this project were to create a luxury yet whimsical and playful space that reflected the brand ideals of REDValentino. We aimed to create an entertaining, unique, and involved experience within the space by using bold colors and materials. This reflected their main focus of creating androgynous, modern, and edgy clothing.

STORE ENTRANCE

CONCEPT

As gender boundaries continue to be pushed and the gender binary becomes less relevant, femininity begins to look different. We wanted to reflect what REDValentino believes, which is that clothing can be luxurious and modern yet playful, edgy, and androgynous. We took these brand ideals and created a space that focused on whimsical motifs as well as the element of mystery to reflect the edginess of the brand. To convey this, we used concepts from Alice in Wonderland; a fanciful and mysterious film. The store will feel dreamy but will become more mysterious and fanciful as the viewer moves toward the center of the store, or as they begin to “fall down the rabbit hole”. There is a focus on a main curved path so that the viewer can not see through to what is on the other side from the entrance, adding to the mystery and anticipation of the store design.

CUSTOM PATTERN

Along with this project we also designed a custom pattern to reflect our concept as well as the brand’s ideals. This pattern is a play on a classic checkered floor, but it begins to “fall apart” as it progresses. We took inspiration from Alice in Wonderland as she falls down the rabbit hole to make it feel like the guest in the space is entering the rabbit hole as they continue to the center of the space. This pattern also goes beyond to convey the major ideas in REDValentino’s brand, which is the challenging of the existing ideas behind fashion. REDValentino seeks to break the boundary between gender and fashion, and this pattern reflects them breaking through the traditional into the modern, unexpected ideas they embrace.

4 SUMMER INTERNSHIP WORK

Over the summer of 2021, I had the opportunity to work with Iowa State University’s Industrial Design faculty member, Pete Evans, on his 4H youth outreach program, FLEx. FLEx (Forward Learning Experience) is an Iowa State 4H Extension and Outreach Program aimed at teaching Iowa K-12 youth about STEM and design principles. The program puts emphasis on the ideas of virtual reality, robotic programming, and 3D printing and laser cutting. These ideas are introduced through the concept of space travel.

My role within this program was to provide design assistance to Pete and the FLEx team by creating branding graphics, vector files, and exhibit layouts for outreach events. Along with my design duties, I also mentored K-12 youth who are interested in STEM and design.

This was created using vector lines, and the pattern was cut out and featured on the side of the storage case as a decorative branding element.
