Questions You Need to Ask a Potential Broker! You’re ready to become licensed and you’re doing your search for a brokerage to join. Newly-licensed associates will soon find that joining a brokerage is rarely difficult – the challenge lies in finding the brokerage that is the best fit for you now & the long term! You need to be sure that the culture of the company supports the way you run your business. You need to know how you will be trained & coached to develop your business and skills. You need to know the availability and credibility of the manager to get the support and advice you need on a broker-level. Whether this is your first opportunity to be interviewing possible destination brokerages or a seasoned professional looking for a change, you will come across all types of sales pitches, incentives, promises, & even smoke and mirrors!

Here are factors that you need to address in your interview: TRAINING…Newly-licensed & seasoned associates have specific training needs. Mentorship, coaching, & training are all distinct – get each program offered by the brokerage in writing. All elements of real estate should be covered including business development, best practices, contracts/forms & business planning. MARKETING…Inquire about company lead capture websites, online and print marketing, niche marketing, and open house availability to provide you with contacts. Keep in mind, the most successful businesses are built through referrals of personal friends, family and past clients and colleagues. Ask for examples of marketing material & tools available to you. OFFICE CULTURE…Does the office work as a team or do the associates operate on their own? Are the managers/trainers passionate about taking the time to develop all their agents exceptionally well or does it feel as if the company thrives on experienced agents who they do not need to spend the time to be trained? CREDIBLE SUPPORT…Do you feel you will get the support you will need as an agent, regardless if you’re new or seasoned? Do you feel you will get sound, knowledgeable, & caring support from your manager and support staff? VALUE…Do yourself & your career a favour – it’s not all about the fees, splits, or numbers! Don’t be swayed by the best deal or the incentive just to get you “in the door”! You’ve gathered all the information you need to make an informed decision – yet, your final decision may be based on your “gut feeling”. Did you walk away from your meeting with excitement (or anxiety)? Were your questions answered thoroughly (or vaguely)? Did you overlook anything out of your hope for a perfect fit? Was your interviewer sincere & authentic about you (or was it all about them)? Did they openly discuss the best business plan for you? You owe it to yourself & your real estate career to pick the support system that is the right fit for you.
