Caln Township To Present
13th Annual Community Day
T
By Francine Fulton
he 13th annual Caln Community Day, which will feature activities for people of all ages, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 3 to 8:30 p.m. in Municipal Park and on G.O. Carlson Boulevard in Thorndale, which will be closed to traffic during the day. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. As in years past, Community Day will feature live entertainment by Project X, a local band that plays rock music, including classic, new rock and alternative. The group will perform throughout the day. Free ongoing activities during Community Day will include miniature golf, bounce houses and face painting. Also featured will be an escape room and an appearance by a street magician. The Craft House Beer Garden will also be open during the day. The popular pie-eating contest will begin at 6 p.m. More than 50 vendors and exhibitors, including food vendors, will participate in Community Day. Among those who will have booths at the event will be local politicians, craft vendors, home-based business vendors and representatives of nonprofit organizations. New this year will be a duck race fundraiser at 6 p.m., which will replace the
golf ball drop activity from previous years. “People would buy tickets and there was corresponding golf ball, and the winners were the ones (whose golf balls were dropped) closest to the pin,” explained Abbey Swan, Caln Township community outreach specialist. “This year, people can buy a ticket to sponsor a rubber duck, which will ‘race’ down the stream. All the ducks will be numbered, and (those who have) the first-, secondand third-place ducks will win cash prizes. Local nonprofits are selling the G.O. Carlson Boulevard will be closed to traffic on Sept. 7 for Caln tickets, with half of the proceeds (for Township’s 13th annual Community Day so that attendees can enjoy them) and the other half going in into the all the festivities and visit more than 50 vendor booths. Community Day fund.” Tours of the Hexagonal Schoolhouse will be offered during Community Day by members of the Caln Township Historical Commission. The building was constructed by Richard Pim and his wife, Mary Edge Pim, who decided to build a school on their farm in 1837 to educate their nine children. In 1968, when Caln celebrated its centennial, the Hexagonal Schoolhouse, previously located on the Edge Farm on Bailey Road, was moved to its new home near the township building. The schoolhouse became the township’s symbol. Those who visit the schoolhouse will see original doors, steps and locks, as well as photos of the Pim family. No one A pie-eating contest will begin at 6 p.m. during Caln Community Day knows for sure why the schoolhouse was on Sept. 7. built in such a shape, although it is believed that it allowed the light and heat to circumnavigate the whole building. The grand finale of Community Day will be a firework show at 8 p.m.

Caln Historical Society
Seeks To Reset Historic Mile Markers
T
he Old Caln Historical Society (OCHS), a local nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and sharing the history of Caln Township, has embarked on a new project to locate, reset and document the historic stones that were once erected to mark each mile between Philadelphia and Lancaster on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, now known as Lincoln Highway. The society, with the help of Caln Township Public Works Department workers, recently reset mile marker 32 in what they believe to be its original location across from the Shops at Wedgewood on Lincoln Highway. The marker reads “32 M TO P,” meaning 32 miles to Philadelphia. Other markers down the line add “M TO L” for “Miles to Lancaster.” Since the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike was constructed in 1794, the marker could be as old as 225 years. Members of the OCHS plan to continue their efforts to locate, reset and document the historic stones. In addition to the recently placed marker, other nearby markers include mile 31, located on the north side of Lincoln Highway in front of the Janwood Apartments in Downingtown; mile 34, located on the south side of Lincoln Highway near Barley Sheaf Road; and mile 35, built into the stone wall near Veterans Drive in Coatesville. Mile marker 33 is missing, but it would be located near the Happy Days Diner in Thorndale. Mile marker 36 is also missing, and it would be located in Coatesville near Pennsylvania Avenue. To view a list of the 62 markers and their whereabouts, if known, readers may visit www.pastones. yolasite.com. Members of the OCHS request that those who know the location of any of the missing markers contact Abbey Swan, community outreach specialist for Caln Township, at aswan@calntownship.org or 610-384-0600, ext. 148. ●
Probate / Estate Administration
The Old Caln Historical Society (OCHS) and Caln Township Public Works Department workers recently put mile marker 32 back in what is believed to be its original location across from the Shops at Wedgewood on Lincoln Highway. Members of the OCHS are currently trying to locate additional missing markers.
