aln Township, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2018, was founded in 1868 by settlers from Calne, England. They named their settlement Caln, after their hometown, which was in Wilshire, located 90 miles west of London. Caln Township still maintains a bond with residents of Calne, England, through a twinning program. Caln was one of the original townships in Chester County. Five other townships were eventually formed from the original Caln, including East Caln, West Caln, East Brandywine, West Brandywine and Valley townships, along with the borough of Downingtown and the city of Coatesville. According to a timeline published by the Old Caln Historical Society, early settlers in the Caln area in 1715 included members of the Pim, Spackman, Coates and Mendenhall families. In 1794, a paved road was constructed in the area, known as the PhiladelphiaLancaster Turnpike Road, which is the present-day Lincoln Highway. In 1804, a stagecoach route was established along the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike Road, with different stops within the region. In 1826, construction of a railroad system called the Mainline began in order to connect Philadelphia with Pittsburgh. The 82-mile railroad segment of the Mainline between Philadelphia and the Susquehanna River was called the Columbia Railroad, and it was competed in 1834. The village of Thorndale was founded in 1849. In 1854, the Thorndale Post Office was established as part of the Thorndale Iron Works. The original Thorndale train station was constructed in 1875 to provide transportation for freight, mail and passengers. The Caln Elementary School was constructed in 1928, and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Hospital opened in 1932. The Thorndale Fire Company was established in 1949. In January of 1953, Caln became designated as a first-class township the only one in Chester County. Five years later, the township purchased a tract of land from Mr. and Mrs. Christian Zinn, owners of Ingleside Farms. The tract of land now houses the township’s municipal complex. In 1968, when Caln celebrated its centennial, the Hexagonal Schoolhouse from the Edge Farm on Bailey Road was moved to its new home in front of the township building. The old one-room schoolhouse, a 75-ton stone structure, was built by Richard “Welcome to Thorndale” banners are being installed along Lincoln Highway.
