“Shipwrecked” vacation Bible school will be hosted at Zion Lutheran Church, 2215 Brandywine Lane, York, from Sunday, July 8, to Thursday, July 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. At “Shipwrecked,” children will have the opportunity to take part in Biblelearning activities, songs, games, treats, Bible adventures, and more. Each day will conclude with the Sail Away Sendoff that gets everyone involved in living what they have learned. Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily for this special time at 8:15 p.m. The program is open to children age 4 through sixth grade. An adult Bible study will run concurrently. York Catholic High School student Brian Hand (front, center) has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he plans to study naval architecture and aspires to become a surface warfare officer. In high school, he was an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council president, captain of the soccer team, and a member of the baseball and track and field teams, musical, and stage crew. He has received awards in various subjects, as well as the Lloyd Bollinger Leadership Award. He placed third and first in the York Catholic Speech Festival in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He is an altar server at St. Joseph Church and a volunteer with Rotary Club of York and United Way of York County. The Colonial York Knitters’ Guild meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 10 a.m. at Adams Electric Company on Route 616, off Route 30 West. Students may apply for the Garden Club Scholarships all four years of their college career. Grove is an Iowa State University sophomore majoring in agricultural engineering. He graduated from Red Lion Area High School. This is the third scholarship he has received from the GCY. He has also received a $1,000 scholarship this year from the state garden club. This summer, Grove plans to shadow a Penn State Extension agricultural engineer. Rohrbaugh is a graduate of Susquehannock High School. He

A history-centered, 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 15, will take place at the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. Participants will hike around the old mining pits, look at the mine openings, climb approximately 700 feet in elevation, and walk about one-eighth mile down a stream. They should wear long pants, waterproof boots and bug spray. Art entries are sought for the 48th annual York Art Association (YAA) Open Juried Exhibition, slated for Sunday, Nov. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 15, at the YAA gallery, 220 S. Marshall St., York. Cash prizes will be awarded. An opening reception will be held on Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m., and the presentation of awards is slated for 3 p.m. The entry deadline is Friday, Sept. 21.
