Hatt's Celebrates 60 Years

Caln Township Plans

Community Day Caln Community Day will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 3 p.m. until dark. In addition to the new later time, this year’s event will be held on G.O. Carlson Boulevard between Municipal Drive and Thornridge Drive and will include many new events and activities, including fireworks. Attendees can look forward to an assortment of food, a petting zoo, pony rides, moon bounces, a zipline, music, local vendors, a photo booth, a dunk tank, a beer garden and more. There will also be a car smash to benefit the Jacinda Miller Memorial Fund.

Hatt's Industrial Supplies & True Value of Thorndale is celebrating its 60th year of operations. Chip Clavier, owner of Hatt's, said that the store’s longevity is owed to its loyal customer base and serviceoriented employees. Paul Hatt founded the industrial supply business in 1956. The hardware store was added to the facility in 2001.

This year will also feature an opportunity to win cash prizes. Up to 1,000 golf balls will be dropped from a 100-foot ladder truck. The person who sponsored the ball closest to the marker on the ground will win $1,000, with the person who sponsored the second-closest ball winning $500. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the township building, 253 Municipal Drive, Thorndale, or on Community Day. Parking will be available in Municipal Park and at surrounding businesses. For more information, readers may visit www.calntownship.org or search for “Caln Township” on Facebook.

Caln Township - The Heart of Chester County Nearly 75 years before the Declaration of Independence was conceived, settlers from Calne, England, were declaring their own independence in the heart of what is today Chester County. Their settlement was dubbed Caln, with Calne, England, as its namesake. It became Caln Township, one of the original townships in Chester County. Five other townships were eventually carved from Caln: East Caln, West Caln, East Brandywine, West Brandywine and Valley townships. The Borough of Downingtown and the city of Coatesville were also molded from Caln, and by 1868, the township's boundaries were established to encompass its present area, a little over 9 square miles. At that time, the post office and railroad were the only establishments within the township, unlike the thriving community it has become over the years. In January of 1953, Caln became a first-class township - the only one in Chester County. Five years later, Caln purchased a tract of land from Mr. and Mrs. Christian Zinn, owners of Ingleside Farms. The tract of land houses the township's municipal complex. In 1968, when Caln celebrated its centennial, the Hexagonal Schoolhouse from the Edge Farm on Bailey Road was moved to its new home in front of the township building. The old one-room schoolhouse, a 75-ton stone structure, was built by Richard Pim in 1837 and was restored as a museum. Caln still remembers its founder from Calne, England, and the two cities have been twinned. The ties between the two communities continue to become strengthened as they create the history of tomorrow, today. PUBLISHED BY ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.

Caln Township Announces

Leaf Vacuuming Program Leaf vacuuming will begin the week of Monday, Oct. 24, in Caln Township. Rather than bagging leaves, residents may rake them to the front of their properties, immediately adjacent to the road’s edge. Leaves must be as close to the road’s edge as possible and not obstructed by vehicles. Residents are asked to not rake leaves into the street, as leaves can get washed into storm inlets during inclement weather or can freeze to the roadway as cooler temperatures set in. Leaf vacuuming will begin the weeks of Oct. 24 and Nov. 7 on Barley Sheaf Road and east, as well as the weeks of Oct. 31 and Nov. 14 west of Barley Sheaf Road and north of Kings Highway. A township-wide cleanup has been set for Nov. 28. There is no appointment necessary for this service. Besides leaf vacuuming, Eagle Disposal will again collect leaves that are placed at the curb in biodegradable bags as part of the Yard Waste Collection Program. Leaf bags are not available for purchase at the Caln Township Building. Instead, bags can be purchased at local hardware stores. Leaves that are placed in bags that are not biodegradable will not be collected. Bags should be placed at the curb no later than 5 a.m. on collection day. In an effort to stay on schedule and in fairness to the majority of participants, no late set-outs will be accepted.

Museum Features Caln Township Memorabilia By Francine Fulton

Located inside the Old Caln Meetinghouse on Route 340 in Thorndale is the museum of the Old Caln Historical Society. The meetinghouse, including the museum, is open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month from April through October. One-third of the meetinghouse contains the museum, which houses the archives, artifacts and other historical memorabilia that the society members have collected throughout the years. Among the items that can be found in the museum are period clothing, door knobs, locks and kitchen items from the WoordruffSietzer House (circa 1835) and photos of the township from 1890. A number of pottery pieces on display were donated by the Brandywine Hospital Auxiliary. The pieces were found at the Taylor House, originally the home of Thomas Vickers of Vickers Pottery. One piece on exhibit is a clay

pipe that was found in Caln Township and dates to the time of the Lenape Indians. Other items on display are donated artifacts that were found on the Woodruff Farm, located at the corner of Caln Meetinghouse Road and Fishersville Road. Visitors will see a piece of embroidery under glass that depicts a yellow fire truck. “I made this for my father when I was just a kid when I was still learning how to embroider,” noted society member Brenda Porter. “My father was the fire chief at Thorndale Fire Company, and I made that in honor of him. My grandfather was one of the (founders) of the Thorndale Fire Company.” The museum also contains items offered for sale, including replicas of township buildings such as the Hexagonal Schoolhouse, pottery, history books and Caln Township Christmas ornaments that reflect Caln’s twinning relationship with Calne, England. A featured attraction at the museum is an old photograph that

Those who tour the meetinghouse and visit the museum are also encouraged to visit the Quaker graveyard located behind the structure. Demchak noted that fewer than half of the 730 known graves in the cemetery can be identified, adding that Quakers do not install elaborate gravestones or monuments. Rather, they use simple field stones to mark the spots where their loved ones are buried. The cemetery also contains the graves of several African-American Civil Pottery, history books and replicas of War veterans.
