On Friday, May 1, individuals and businesses will have the opportunity to take part in the third annual Give Local York, a 24-hour online giving event that will benefit more than 300 nonprofit organizations that serve York County. Community members may donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice at www.givelocalyork.org on that day, and all donations will be enhanced with bonus funds provided by Give Local York sponsors. “I like it refer to it as a holiday for York County because it’s a day to celebrate all of the great nonprofit organizations that we have,” said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “It’s a very high-energy day with lots of events going on.” Participating organizations are encouraged to plan an event for the community to take part in on May 1, whether by themselves or in partnership with other participating nonprofits or local businesses to raise awareness about Give Local York. The day will culminate with a Give Local York celebration from 5 to 10 p.m. in downtown York during First Friday. With hundreds of organizations set up and live music and dancing in the square, Given said, “it just becomes a big party.” From 9 p.m. to midnight, a New Year’s Eve-style event will be hosted at the Valencia Ballroom, 142 N. George St., York. That celebration will close out Give Local York with a countdown to midnight. Confetti cannons will go off and there will be a balloon drop as the grand total amount raised is announced. More than $3.2 million was generated through the 2019 Give Local York event. Given said that while organizers are of course hoping to top that number, the focus for 2020 has shifted from setting a financial goal to having 10,000 unique donors - a hefty but

achievable jump from last year’s 8,777 donors. “The focus on individual donors is shifting our marketing approach this year,” Given explained. “We are still shining a light on each of the organizations and what they do, but we are also doing a lot of spotlighting volunteers.” Organizations will also have the opportunity to publicize volunteer roles to encourage people to get involved in new ways throughout the year. Given noted that individuals may also sign up to fundraise for a specific organization with their own online peer-to-peer fundraising page. “People like to support people that they know, so we’re hoping this gets people excited to give,” shared Given. Give Local York is hosted by The White Rose Leadership Institute, whose mission is to support nonprofit leaders. The White Rose Leadership Institute also offers the York Federal Fellowship, a yearlong program designed to strengthen the skills of nonprofit executive leaders. In addition to Give Local York providing a tremendous fundraising opportunity, participating nonprofits will have the opportunity to win various prizes and to attend trainings
During Give Local York on May 1, people will be encouraged to donate online to support their choice of more than 300 nonprofit organizations in a 24-hour giving spree. All contributions will be enhanced thanks to the donations of event sponsors. and webinars to set them up for success not only with Give Local York but with fundraising year-round. “We really use this as an opportunity for capacity-building: how to engage with people and tell your story,” Given said. Nonprofit organizations in York County may register to participate in Give Local York at www.givelocalyork.org through Friday,

Martin Library and Susquehanna SCORE are partnering to offer a quarterly series of free workshops for aspiring small business owners. The “Four Keys to a Successful Startup” series will run from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays in March, June, September, and November at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the introductory program “What Does It Take to Start a Small Business” on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the library. Led by SCORE certified mentors Gregory Bachman and Joe Cervenak, the session will help attendees explore if starting a business is a good fit. It will provide tools and information to help define an individual’s business concept, how to understand one’s entrepreneurial strengths, and useful ways to create a business plan. Each four-week series will include workshops on varied aspects of banking and credit; accounting, bookkeeping, and QuickBooks; insurance and minimizing risk; and business law and intellectual property. Kicking off the quarterly series will be April Murray from Truist Bank on March 4. Murray has more than 35 years of experience in banking and will be talking with workshop participants about how to make the most of personal finances to start a business. On March 11, Suzanne Harrison, owner of The Tangible Effect, will speak about accounting tools needed to produce and manage profits. The third workshop in the
series, on March 18, will feature Matt Bowman, group controller for Kocman Insurance, who will share how to use insurance to make the cost of a solution less than the cost of a problem. Wrapping up the March sessions on March 25 will be Kate Hynes, an attorney for the Stock & Leader Business and Real Estate Practice Groups, who will present how to properly set up a business, secure a business name, and protect creative know-how. Susquehanna SCORE has provided free and confidential business mentoring since 1979, tailored to meet the needs of emerging and growing businesses and small business owners’ personal objectives. Individuals interested in attending the workshops can register on Martin Library’s online events calendar at www.york libraries.org/events or by calling the library at 717-849-6927. For directions or more information about the library, readers may visit www.yorklibraries.org/york-martin.

has been actively teaching Sunday school with middle school boys, young couples, and, most recently, with elderly residents at the Hanover Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Moul shares that experiences with his wife’s long-term health problems, as well as recent events in his own life, have taught him more than ever about the endless love and mercy of Jesus. At the breakfast, his message will focus on how God uses suffering, hardships, and sorrows in people’s lives. The Rev. Lloyd Marchant first began organizing the annual Men’s Resurrection Breakfast at his church to fill a void he felt was created when Promise Keepers, an international men’s ministry, stopped holding breakfasts in the York County area. Marchant has reached out to men from the local area to speak each year. Men of all ages are welcome to attend. To register for the breakfast, interested individuals may call 717-755-0091 or email gracebaptistyork@comcast.net. The deadline to register is Sunday, Feb. 23. A freewill offering will be received.

For the last seven years on the first Saturday of March, approximately 150 men from various churches throughout York County have gathered at Grace Baptist Church, 3920 East Prospect Road, York, for the annual Men’s Resurrection Breakfast. This year’s event will be held at the church on Saturday, March 7, at 9 a.m. A buffet breakfast will be served, followed by a time of special music and a presentation by guest speaker Kelby Moul. A lifelong York County resident, Moul grew up in Spring Grove and has lived in Hanover for the last 23 years. He has been a teacher in the public schools for 25 years, having spent five years teaching second grade in the Eastern York School District and the last 20 years teaching fourth grade in South Western School District. Moul committed his life to Jesus Christ at age 12, when he says that he “understood salvation, but not necessarily discipleship.” However, Moul began to seek God more fervently approximately 24 years ago when his life took unexpected and unwanted turns. He recommitted his life to Jesus Christ and
