How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Our mission is simple. We opened during the Great Depression to provide quality early childhood education and get mothers back into the workforce. Very little about that has changed. We’re serving more than 100 children, 70 percent of whom come from lowincome, working families, and we provide early childhood education with the highest accreditations we can achieve across the board. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? We have about 35 staff members. Did York Day Nursery participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? We did! phone system. We were elated to remain in the top tiers for the number of people donating and were greatly surprised with the funds we were able to raise. What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? Our goal is to raise $50,000 this year. Much of our fundraising last year was making personal calls throughout the day. This year, we’re getting a little more into the community by working with Revival Social Club for proceeds from lunch and dinner. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Right now, our plan is to use money raised to support our infant and toddler scholarships. Much of the state and EITC funds we received are earmarked for our prekindergarten programs, leaving our littlest learners at risk. Our scholarships funded by private donations allow us to help parents cover the cost of care and guarantee that there is continuity in care for their little ones.

Volunteers collect recycled plastic grocery bags and then, under the direction of Tippy Ness, the volunteers cut the bags into strips, join the strips to make “plarn,” and crochet the plarn into mats. The mats are given to Michael Gurreri of York Giving Helping Hands, CJ Hoffman and pastor Thomas Adinolfi for distribution to York County residents. Dallastown Area Communities That Care Address: Dallastown Area School District, 700 New School Lane, Dallastown, PA 17313 Phone: 717-244-4021 Email: stumper@ddogcom.net Website: http://dallastown.ss13.sharp school.com Phyllis Stump, secretary on the board, who has been with the organization for 18 years, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Dallastown Area Communities That Care? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The Dallastown Area Communities That Care helps our youths to succeed by supporting and maintaining programs and activities that provide positive peer mentorship, promote responsible lifestyles free from substance abuse, and nurture strong family and community relationships.

The Communities That Care is a nationally initiated program that began more than 20 years ago. Our state collects data on drug use, mental health concerns, (and other issues) from the students through a Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinqency assessment, which helps us determine the needs of our students. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? The board is composed of both community and school members (about 20), plus students from eighth to 12th grades. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? We support our school in-house programs of mentoring the elementary and intermediate school students with high school students. These two programs are called Big and Little Buddies and SEALS (Supporting Education And Leadership Skills). We support programs to keep kids safe. We provide scholarships to graduating seniors who have been involved in our mentoring programs. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? The funds will go toward all the organization’s programs and scholarships.

The 21st annual Pennsylvania Herb and Garden Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 6. The event will be held in Memorial Hall at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The two-day festival will include a full schedule of nationally known speakers, demonstrators, and instructors who are knowledgeable in gardening and using herbs and flowers for medicinal, culinary, and crafting purposes. The 2019 Herb of the Year is anise hyssop, a self-seeding perennial that works well in sunny borders, wildflower gardens, and herb gardens. The 2019 featured speaker will be Susan Belsinger, horticulturist, author, culinary herbalist, educator, food writer, photographer, blogger, and editor. Referred to as a flavor artist, Belsinger delights in kitchen alchemy - the blending of harmonious foods, herbs, and spices - to create food and beverages. Her latest publication is “The Culinary Herbal: Growing and Preserving 97 Flavorful Herbs.” Jessica Walliser, horticulturist, freelance writer, and radio host, will also speak at the festival. Walliser is the co-host of The Organic Gardeners, an award-winning program on KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh. Her lectures will focus on her new book, “Container Gardening Complete,” which shares how to successfully garden in a small space, including stepby-step directions, photographs, and information on more than 125 plants. Many of this year’s talks and demonstrations will include incorporating herbs into everyday life. Workshop topics will include designing a unique garden container using herbs and non-edibles, using essential oils in everyday life for a variety of purposes, eating properly for good nutrition, customs and benefits of tea, and growing and using lavender. There is an admission fee per day. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. Parking is free. For more details, including a complete listing of speakers and other events, readers may visit www .paherbandgardenfestival.com. Readers may also contact Susan Eggleston at pennsylvaniaherbfestival @msn.com or 717-433-2776.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. You who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal, You who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You who are in all instances, of my life, with me, I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Thank You for Your love towards me and my loved ones. Amen. Persons may say this prayer 3 consecutive days without asking your wish, after the 3rd day your wish will be granted, no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted. Thank you. KMS

The York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF) recently acknowledged the contributions made to the organization by its outgoing president, Sarah Reinecker, who served in this role for the past four years. Two books have been donated by the YSEF board to the school libraries in Reinecker’s honor. The board of directors thanked Reinecker for her commitment and personal investment. According to the board, Reinecker’s inclusive leadership and warmth, passion, excitement, knowledge and dedication have helped YSEF forge strong relationships with donors, York Suburban (YS) alumni, staff, volunteers and students and has boosted YSEF’s public profile significantly. Reinecker was recognized for being a judicious steward of YSEF, always mindful of its core mission to enhance the educational experience for students. During her presidency, Reinecker has been a central member of the group that established the Impact Foundation, a student-led committee of YSEF. This included the establishment of six Impact Closets - one in each YS building - and the Food for

one who has died. The camp aims to help children explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and build self-confidence. Group and individual activities will be incorporated to help children learn how to express their feelings and share memories of their loved ones. Campers enjoy fun activities such as swimming and making s’mores around a campfire, as well as participating in griefrelated activities. A trained, volunteer adult buddy is paired with each child for companionship, support, and supervision throughout the weekend. There is a nominal cost for the registration fee, and financial assistance is available. Applications are due by Friday, May 10, and children will meet with a counselor to determine if the camp best meets their needs. Space is limited. For details and registration, readers may call 717-391-2413 or visit www.hospiceandcommunity care.org and click on Kids and Teens Support.
