Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf moved York County to the yellow phase of recovery, effective May 22. This is a step toward reopening York County’s economy amid the COVID-19 crisis. This phase of recovery means the stay-at-home order is lifted in York County; large gatherings of more than 25 individuals is prohibited; all businesses reopening must follow social distancing and additional guidelines; in-person retail operations are permitted, with curbside service and delivery preferable; restaurants and bars are limited to carry-out and delivery only; child care is open, complying with guidance;
COVID-19 restrictions. In the two years since its founding, Give Local York has united the community, raising $8 million for local nonprofits from more than 20,000 donors from all over the region, the state, the country, and the world. To learn more, readers may visit www.givelocalyork.org.

Like many congregations, ValleyView Alliance Church in Hellam began holding its weekly services online when the stay-athome order was put in place. Helping to make this format of worship possible are good friends Allison “Fish” Fisher and Erin Habecker. In mid-March, when Pennsylvania suspended gatherings of 10 or more people, ValleyView moved quickly. Pastor Lee Nanfelt recalled Fisher and Habecker’s enthusiasm for making creative videos, some of which featured church members, especially fellow young adults, and for posting these videos online. Fisher and Habecker, who had both been laid off from their jobs due to the pandemic, agreed to edit videos for online worship. Services have included two selections of worship music coordinated by assistant pastor James O’Handly, who, like Fisher and Habecker, is an Eastern York High School graduate. Members of the congregation have contributed by reading Scripture or praying. Special features have been added most weeks. For
example, member Kathy Myer and her donkey were featured on Palm Sunday, and a recent video included an overlay of the Susquehanna River as Psalm 42 was read. Nanfelt has given a series of shortened messages called “Peace in Troubled Times,” largely focused on the Psalms. The entire worship sequence is about 30 minutes long to accommodate the online format. Online worship will likely continue in some form after inperson worship is resumed at ValleyView. Online messages are posted weekly late Saturday night or early Sunday morning and are available for viewing anytime afterward at
www.valleyviewcma.org. ValleyView Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Ave., is located just behind Fulton Bank on Market Street in Hellam. For more information or to contact ValleyView, readers may visit the aforementioned website.

York Day Nursery SPCA Updates Clinic Schedule The York County SPCA reopened its careful consideration by the organizaSets Reopening spay/neuter clinic with modified safety tion’s leadership team and by consulting Now that York County has moved into the yellow phase of reopening, York Day Nursery (YDN) has announced it will open to its families on Wednesday, June 3. YDN aims to provide a safe, high-quality early child care option in order to support parents as they return to work. Although YDN has always had high standards for sanitization because of its national NAEYC accreditation, new protocols are being put into place in accordance with new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those measures include daily temperature checks and new drop-off and pickup procedures to minimize people coming into the building and to keep families socially distant. YDN staff members spent two days cleaning their classrooms, removing toys that are harder to sanitize and learning new guidelines and protocols.

protocols on May 26. The organization was required to close the high-volume clinic in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from both the CDC and state and national veterinary medical organizations at that time dictated that elective spay/neuter surgeries must be temporarily suspended, both to conserve personal protective equipment and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During the closure, caretakers were unable to have free-roaming cats spayed or neutered. The Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association has since revised its statement, now allowing veterinarians to use their professional judgement to resume these elective procedures, while still adhering to state policies and recommendations regarding social distancing. York County SPCA’s decision to reopen its spay/neuter clinic was made after
recommendations from the CDC, the AVMA, and shelter medicine experts. In order to safely resume services, several modifications to scheduling, intake, and discharge procedures have been made. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services will be given scheduling priority with the goal of preventing pregnancy and new litters in the community cat population. Scheduling priority will also be given to those clients with a pet that may be pregnant. Once the clinic has caught up on TNR patients, the veterinary team will begin seeing rescheduled patients next. Due to the backlog of spay/neuter appointments, new patients will be seen beginning in August. New appointments can be made by visiting www.ycspca.org. The SPCA anticipates that the coronavirus will continue to delay scheduling for the remainder of 2020.

Wagman Construction Inc. has once again partnered with the York Revolution to construct a new seating area, the White Claw Terrace Courtesy of Ace Distributing. Located at the third-base upper corner, the new deck will incorporate the top three rows of sections 25 and 26 and will incorporate general admission seating, offering food and local and craft beers. Designed by Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects, the new addition will feature a wood-like deck with beverage rails. This marks the third project on which Wagman has partnered with the York Revolution. Wagman completed the preconstruction and construction for the stadium when it opened in 2007. In 2019, Wagman completed extensive renovations to the skybox level, including the new 1741 Club Presented by UPMC, designed by Murphy and Dittenhafer Architects. Construction began on the White Claw Terrace Courtesy of Ace Distributing shortly before Gov. Tom Wolf suspended nonessential business operations due to COVID-19. Construction will resume when permitted. Founded in 1902, Wagman is a fourth-generation, family-owned company with offices in Pennsylvania and Virginia and headquarters in York. Parade Rescheduled In East Prospect This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Memorial Day parade in East Prospect. The parade, originally scheduled for Sunday, May 24, has been postponed to Sunday, Sept. 6. It will kick off at 4 p.m. The committee tries to make each year’s program better than the previous year. This year, the committee is looking for community organizations to enter the first float contest. The committee encourages local organizations to enter their floats in the parade. Further, a familyfriendly fun time will start after
the program of remembrance, and it will feature food, face painting, a petting zoo, balloon animals, games, and other events. The evening will culminate with a fireworks display at 9 p.m. The committee would like to offer friends and families the opportunity to post a brief message or remembrance in the parade guide. Submissions are limited to 200 characters and may be submitted to the committee at www.eastprospectparade.org /contact-us.html. There is no charge for this service, though donations are appreciated.

In two days, with over 100 donations, Cases for a Cause raised $6,500 for the United Way of York County’s COVID-19 Response Fund. Wyndridge Farm thanked the community for supporting the cause.

Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA) in Harrisburg qualified to compete at the national Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) on April 25. The CCA team has won the state championship for 10 consecutive years, though a key change this year is that the competition took place virtually amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The CCA team won the Pennsylvania state competition in February, automatically qualifying for the national event. During the school’s closure, the team of students has collaborated virtually to complete the presentation for the national competition. The RWDC tasked students with a professional engineering challenge to design and implement unmanned aerial systems, more commonly known as drones, to improve everyday life and tackle issues facing global industries. The CCA team designed a drone that takes off with rotors pointing upward, then switches to a hybrid airfoil for long-distance flight to conserve battery power.

dents to design a drone that could carry a payload of up to 5 kilograms, make continuous deliveries through a neighborhood, and complete its route with at least 20 minutes’ worth of battery life remaining. CCA’s team members included 12th-grader Alisher Aminov of Lebanon, 12th-grader Timothy Cribbs of Camp Hill, 12thgrader Kenya Mitchell of Steelton, 10th-grader Bella Christianson of Waynesboro, 10th-grader Numayr McPhaul of York, and 10th-grader Luke Zimmerman of Palmyra. The RWDC was founded to help build the United States science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce by allowing high school students to work and compete in a collaborative setting on real global engineering challenges. The competition aims to equip the next generation of engineers and scientists with the knowledge to address real-world challenges. The CCA team has finished in second place nationally twice since first participating in the RWDC in 2008. The competition virtually hosted teams from around the world as they presented their inventions to a panel of judges who have careers in the aerospace and defense industries. CCA is a Pennsylvania public cyber charter school serving students statewide in kindergarten through 12th grade.

the Boy Scouts of America’s Order of the Arrow. Elijah is a junior at Central York High School and plans to attend college to study electrical engineering. For his Eagle Scout Project, Caden, son of Mark and Michele McKinney, converted an observation deck into an outdoor classroom at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. This project involved removing the banisters; power washing the deck, although there was not easy access to water and electricity; and then re-staining the deck. Three sets of benches were added along with a metal roof that was extended to cover everything. The project took a total of 109 hours to complete for Caden and his adult and Scout helpers. Having started out as a Tiger Cub, Caden has been a Scout for 12 years and has earned 26
merit badges. Caden is a senior at Central York High School. He is undecided about college but would like to eventually major in environmental science. Both Scouts thanked their parents, their Scoutmaster, and fellow Scouts, friends and family members for their help in completing their projects and their Eagle requirements. State Rep. Keith Gillespie attended the Court of Honor and presented the Scouts with a House Citation and a personal letter, and representatives of the Marine Corps League and the Sons of the American Revolution also attended and presented the Scouts with Certificates of Recognition. The new Eagle Scouts also received Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition from Rep. Scott Perry and American flags that had flown
over the United States Capitol in recognition of their achievements. CWO John Crone from the First Capitol Detachment of the Marine Corps League was on hand to present the MCL Good Citizenship Award to each honoree in recognition of his achievement. Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. These efforts included forming a special partnership with Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg. On May 1, Letterkenny started production of 70,000 protective gowns for WellSpan Health to help bolster the local health care system’s supply chain as it continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Letterkenny produced prototypes for cloth face masks for WellSpan Health, which has shared the designs with other community partners. Letterkenny Army Depot has been supporting frontline U.S. military efforts since the 1940s and stepped up to join a much different fight to protect people.

In February, prior to its first patient testing positive for COVID19, WellSpan Health was reacting to supply chain demand as production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in China was diminished due to the country’s battle with the pandemic, and PPE was redirected to U.S. cities already experiencing COVID-19. Meanwhile, John Massimilla, chief operating officer and vice president of administration for WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s 20,000 employees. Massimilla shared the information about Letterkenny’s efforts with WellSpan Health’s performance improvement team, comprising hospital officials and engineers. According to Keith Noll, senior vice president - chief administrative officer for WellSpan Health, the team would later be nicknamed the “MacGyver team” after the star of the television series who uses unconventional problem-solving skills to save lives. The team, led by Debra Ruckert, senior director of performance improvement at WellSpan Health, utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products. As discussions moved forward and the partnership took shape, Letterkenny shared its mask design for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple

Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to make 70,000 protective gowns, Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny expected production to take six to
eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site. Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward.
