Future Leaders Program Holds Graduation Leadership York hosted a graduation ceremony for its Future Leaders of York (FLY) program on May 19. The Future Leaders of York Class of 2019 consisted of 36 high school sophomores and juniors from 21 schools. The 2019 class was the 30th class to graduate through the FLY program. Alexis Southivong, a sophomore at Central York High School, recently won the East York Optimist Club’s essay contest based on the theme “When All the World’s Problems Are Solved, Is Optimism Still Necessary?” Southivong received a cash award for the honor. In addition, Taylor Davis and Megan Lutz received cash awards for placing second and third. The East York Optimist Club has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for many years and has been active in benefiting the youths in the community since 1956. Other programs and service projects that the club conducts include

Saturday, July 6, at the Clark’s Valley Stone Tower Loop Hike. Participants will shuttle from Exit 24 Park and Ride in York to Dauphin Park and Ride at 8 a.m., then from the Dauphin Park and Ride at 9 a.m. to the trailhead. A short hike will be followed by a covered dish picnic at JPJ cabin, 1145 Furnace Road, Airville, on Sunday, July 7. A family-friendly 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 14, will include the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. September House Posts Schedule September House, 1251 W. King St., York, has posted its upcoming schedule of activities. begin. The study will be based on the book “Experiencing God.” This group will meet on the first and third Fridays of each month, and anyone can join at any time. Part three of the Old Testament series by Great Courses will be shown on Wednesday, July 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This lecture series offers insights into the Bible and historical documentation. On Thursday, July 11, scrapbooking will occur from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and participants will learn how to create mats for their pages. Attendees are asked to bring photos and memorabilia. Paper and other materials will be available at no cost. Those who like to sing or who enjoy

listening to others belt out tunes are invited to Karaoke With Penny on Friday, July 12, at 12:30 p.m. No experience or talent is necessary. The senior center will conclude its annual “Ask the Nurse” health programs presented by nursing students and their instructors from HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College with “Back Injuries/Pain Management” on Tuesday, July 16, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Free blood pressure testing will be available at the programs. Reservations are requested but not required, and these programs are open to people of all ages. The amateur (ham) radio group, while still active, is taking a break for the

summer. Instruction and activities will not be as structured during the summer months. All radio activities are made possible through an equipment grant from the York County Community Foundation’s Embracing Aging Grant program. The Fit N Fun exercise program is offered daily from 10 to 10:30 a.m. On Wednesdays, there are dancing classes, with exercise games on Fridays. A Diabetes Self-Management Program will be held on Mondays through July 15 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. This comprehensive program is also open to caregivers and those who are prediabetic or who have a family history of diabetes. Red Lion Borough’s New Year’s Eve Committee will hold the annual Roarin’ Great Car Show and Stay at Home Celebration on Thursday, July 4, at Fairmount Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The car show will offer 16 classes of competition,

The first 100 participants will receive a commemorative dash plaque. Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards in York, in partnership with the City of York, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association, and the Watershed Alliance of York, are launching the 2019 Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Project, a project to raise awareness about storm water runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. Each painted storm drain will tell a story, so people stop and consider where the water and pollution flows after it enters the storm drain. Art submissions are currently being accepted from artists age 14 and up who reside in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The

The York Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has awarded one graduate and one undergraduate scholarship to local college students for the fall semester. Cassidy Camplese, who graduated from Penn State University with a major in chemistry, has received $3,000. She intends to pursue a Master of Education degree in

hopes of becoming a high school chemistry teacher and eventually an educator at the university level. A current full-time student at Penn State York, Mindy Gruzin received a $1,500 award. Gruzin, who is majoring in biology with a focus on pre-med, plans to graduate in 2020, then attend medical school to become a physician, with a focus on public health research. AAUW presented the awards at its banquet in May. Proceeds from its Spring Market Faire benefit the annual scholarship fund.

College Receives Endowment, Awards Scholarship An endowment will provide ongoing support for a York College program that annually provides a scholarship to a local student to study the arts at the college. At the direction of the donor, the scholarship has been renamed to honor Dominic DelliCarpini, the dean of the Center for Community Engagement. The DelliCarpini Community Art Scholarship has been awarded this year to Ellen Korver, a senior at York Suburban High School. Korver is active in the visual arts, music and theater. The gift supports the continuation of the York Community Arts Scholars Exhibition (YCASE) Program, which includes the DelliCarpini Scholar. In addition to the scholarship program, YCASE provides occasions and events to bring local teachers, students and families together with representatives of York College and York’s cultural community to celebrate art in schools and in the community. This includes an annual art
