Youth Program Seeks Volunteers York County Juvenile Probation Services is seeking volunteers for its Youth Aid Panel, a diversionary program that holds youths accountable while avoiding the stigma of permanent criminal records. older, have no criminal record and successfully pass state child abuse and FBI clearances, if applicable. The panels meet once a month with the juveniles and their family in the evening. The Victor’s Bocce League, which began in the summer of 1985, is celebrating 35 seasons of bocce fun and competition. The Victor’s Bocce League, based at Victor’s Italian Restaurant in York, is celebrating 35 seasons. The original owners of Victor’s started the league in the summer of 1985. It began with a group of regulars on Saturday afternoons challenging each other in friendly matches. The league soon began to take shape as it grew into 11 teams of two. When proprietor Marie Sindicich and her husband, Mark, took over Victor’s in 2008, there were 28 teams. The league expanded to 40 teams in 2009 and over the course of the next five or so years, the number of teams increased to 44 and then to 55. When the court was moved in 2016, the league expanded to 66 teams of two, split among six flights. Marie noted that the current number of teams is manageable and inclusive and accommodates just about everyone who is interested. Del Miller, a longtime Victor’s patron and lover of bocce, is one of the longest participants in

the league, having been involved for more than 30 years. Miller was integral in moving the court from the northwestern corner of Victor’s property to the southwestern corner. According to Mark, who is the league organizer, the new court does justice to the history and culture of the league, while also offering table and beverage service. Organizers noted that some teams take the competition very seriously, while others participate just for fun. The Victor’s Bocce League end-of-season bash and tournament was scheduled for Aug. 25. More information about Victor’s Bocce League can be found at https://victorsofyork.com/bocce -league-york-pa/. Registration for the 2020 season will begin in April 2020. New participants are always welcome, and spectators are invited to enjoy the action. Victor’s Italian Restaurant is located at 554 S. Ogontz St., York. Additional information is available at https://victorsof york.com/.

York Habitat for Humanity will hold a breakfast in partnership with the Black Ministers Association to announce the 2019 Faith Build, a partnership between York Habitat, Thrivent Financial and local churches. The breakfast will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:45 a.m. at Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene’s City Campus, 350 Chestnut St., York. Faith Build will build the first of 14 new homes at the site of York Habitat’s Chestnut Street Revitalization project, where fire destroyed 16 homes in July 2009. The lots were acquired through an agreement with the Redevelopment Authority of the City of York and private owners. The purpose of this breakfast is to show how local churches can unite to serve those most in need in the community. To register for the breakfast by the Monday, Sept. 9, deadline or for more information, readers may email athena@ yorkhabitat.org. Applications for the homes are also being accepted. Readers may visit www.york habitat.org or email terri@york habitat.org to learn more. A land dedication ceremony will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. at the 700 block of East Chestnut Street in York city. This event will be open to the public.

Service Will Honor First Responders September House Sets Schedule during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. This year, members of First St. John’s Lutheran Church of York will participate with Columbia’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as the partner congregation. A pianist and accompanying trumpeter from First St. John’s will perform Christian and patriotic songs, and a bagpiper will play “Amazing Grace” while a cash offering is received to benefit the Columbia Food Bank. The Color Guard of Catholic War Veterans Post 1306 will lead the opening and closing processions for the service, which will include the service leaders, civic and first responder personnel,

and represenatives of local veterans’ organizations. Current active-duty and retired military personnel are invited to wear their uniforms or some insignia of their branch of service, unit, and rank. St. Paul’s Church will serve a “y’all come” picnic brunch in the park immediately after the service. All who attend the service are welcome, with their family and friends. Attendees should bring lawn chairs for the morning. In the event of rain, the service will gather in St. Paul’s building, which is directly across Locust Street from the park’s gazebo. Restrooms are avaiable in the church building’s assembly hall.

September House, 1251 W. King St., York, has posted its upcoming schedule of activities. A free lunch is available on weekdays for any York County resident at least 60 years of age. For more information, readers may call 717-848-4417 or view the senior center’s Facebook page. The senior center is planning a night out at Hoss’s on White Street in York as a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 8. In preparation for the event, the center is selling gift cards, which will be ordered in time for buyers to use for the November event. The center will receive a portion of the proceeds from gift card sales; funds will be used to help provide programs for seniors. Readers may call Marie at the center for more information.

Penny will visit the center on Friday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. to lead karaoke. Scrapbookers are invited to share their scraps, tools, and talent on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. All are welcome. Participants should bring photos and memorabilia to use as they arrange pages. In conjunction with making scrapbooks, the center will offer classes on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to teach how to organize and print pictures from an iPhone or an Android device. Attendees will learn to set up albums and move pictures from one place to another. A second class will be available on Thursday, Sept. 12, if needed. Both classes will run from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Wednesday, Sept. 11,

exercising (dancing) to music will be offered starting at 10 a.m. Participants will practice old and new dances. The movie “Runaway Bride” will be shown from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. Free sweet treats will be served during the movie. Games are played throughout the week. Bingo is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m., with the first card free, and on Wednesdays for all cash as a fundraiser, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available.

The Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Locust Street Park in Columbia. The purpose of the annual service is to recognize the community’s first responders and military veterans and to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The speaker for this year’s service will be the Rev. Dr. James L. Banach, a Civil War re-enactor chaplain. His message, given in his authentic uniform and presented as if he is speaking to an 1863 audience in Gettysburg, will highlight how today’s first responders echo the Army and civilian volunteer responders
