Concert To Feature Theater Organ Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York, in partnership with the Susquehanna Valley Theatre Organ Society, will present “Broadway, Big Bands, and More!” featuring organist Ken Double on Sunday, Oct. 6. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. in the Capitol Theatre. Double will play big band and Broadway tunes on the 1927 Mighty Wurlitzer organ. In addition, he will accompany the 1929 short silent film comedy “That’s My Wife,” starring Laurel and Hardy. The theater pipe organ was originally designed to accompany silent films during the silent film era. When talking pictures replaced silent films, many of these theater organs were destroyed. Appell Center has a surviving theater pipe organ in the Capitol Theatre. A former radio and television sportscaster who started taking organ lessons as an 8-year-old in Chicago, Double has enjoyed a second career focused on his love of
the music of the theater pipe organ. As a sportscaster, Ken broadcast NBA and major college basketball; NHL, IHL, and AHL hockey; the worldwide broadcast of the Indy 500; and more. Since retiring in 2008, Double has performed concerts on great theater pipe organs around the world. He also helped establish the Long Center Theatre Organ Society in Lafayette, Ind.; spent 10 years as the president of the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS); and currently is the director of fundraising for the Historic Organ Restoration Committee, the organization restoring the largest musical instrument in the world, the Midmer-Losh organ at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Double performed his first concert in 1978; has 20 recordings to his credit; has toured Australia several times; and is one of the organists at the famed Atlanta Fox Theatre playing “Mighty Mo,” the Moller theater organ heard there since 1929.
Ken Double will play the Capitol Theatre’s theater organ during a concert on Sunday, Oct. 6. The theater is located at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. Double’s theater organ credits also include performing the role of master of ceremonies for more than 20 ATOS annual and regional conventions. The historic Capitol Theatre recently underwent a complete renovation, which included all new seating, a new concessions stand, new and improved restrooms downstairs, and addi-
tional accessible seating and restrooms on the main floor. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students. Group ticket pricing is available. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door the day of the concert. To purchase tickets, readers may visit https://appellcenter.org or call 717-846-1111.

Mair Named As Bishop Coats was the first counselor in the Lancaster Stake Young Men’s Organization. A bishop generally serves upward of four to seven years in the bishopric, devoting a good deal of his time to perform the duties of the office, and just as all callings in the Church are part of a lay ministry, the bishopric positions are unpaid and filled by men who have prepared themselves to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others. While serving as the bishop of a large ward or the branch president of a small ward, the bishop generally continues to pursue his career in the community, or he may be retired. He must be married, and he also must be a high priest in the Melchizedek priesthood. Sometimes the bishop is called the “father of the ward” because he is the individual most closely involved in working with the congregation. The stake president is the immediate priesthood leader over the bishop, and he operates with two counselors and a high council. While the stake president recommends a new

A new bishopric is accepted by the common consent of ward members, and the bishop and his counselors are then set apart by the laying on of hands by those priesthood members in authority over them. Many of the bishopric members have prepared themselves for their positions by attending
four years of seminary classes as young men and by serving a twoyear mission. They generally have studied Scripture daily, have accepted a variety of callings, and have attended church faithfully throughout their years as members of the Church. Other men who have been called to assist the bishop are Ward executive secretary Brian Malcarne; Ward clerk Andy Smith; and Ward assistant clerk for finance Timothy Shetter.

York County Libraries (YCL) president Robert F. Lambert and youth services director Paula Gilbert have announced initial results of the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The early childhood initiative launched in October, and York County Libraries recently held its first graduation ceremony for 1000 Books readers. The initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. According to Gilbert, 68 children and their families achieved the goal of reading 1,000 books in the program’s first nine months from Oct. 1, 2018, to July 1, 2019. All totaled, this group read 72,443 books during this period. At 1,000 books each, the total would have been 68,000 books. The group kept reading, collectively logging an additional 4,443 books. This group was the first to receive 1000 Books Before Kindergarten diplomas from YCL. YCL officials set an initial goal of having 1,000 children register for the program in the first year. According to Lambert, by the beginning of July, 1,942 children were enrolled, and they had read 252,760 books. By July 30, partici-
