Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the

United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.YorkSymphony.org or call 717-846-1111.

Nathan Clark will be featured on Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto during York Symphony Orchestra’s season-opening concert on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.

Bridge Bust To Celebrate 30th Year By Chelsea Peifer

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) will present the 30th annual Bridge Bust on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nearly 300 vendors will offer antiques, art, crafts, food, and one-of-a-kind items for purchase at the popular community event. Area residents are invited to stroll and browse the selection of wares that will fill the Veterans Memorial Bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville. The 1.25-mile bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event. Separate nominal admission prices have been set for adults and for children ages 2 to 11. Children under age 2 will be admitted for free. Pets will not be permitted on the bridge during the event. An anchor in the community as far as long-running local arts events go, Bridge

Bust fulfills a dual purpose of promoting local makers as well as raising funds for the SVCC. Proceeds from Bridge Bust help to operate the SVCC and Visitors Center, located at 445 Linden St., Columbia. The Visitors Center is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. In addition to vendors, several nonprofit organizations, including local Boy Scout troops and churches, will have booths at the event. Some of those organizations will offer children’s games and activities. Food vendors will offer a plethora of items for people to purchase, such as cotton candy, caramel apples, popcorn and kettle corn, deep-fried onions, bacon on a stick, pork barbecue, ribbon fries, fried pickles, breakfast sandwiches, cheesesteaks, ice cream, soft pretzels, egg rolls, baked goods, Italian ice, crab cakes, cheese curds, hamburgers, hot

dogs, milkshakes, lemonade, coffee, apple dumplings, and edible cookie dough. Parking and shuttle service will be available for free on both sides of the bridge, which spans the Susquehanna River and connects Columbia and Wrightsville via Route 462. Visitors can hop on a shuttle at Glatfelter Field, located at Route 462 and 12th Street in Columbia, or at Eastern York High School, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Shuttles will be available to transport patrons who wish to only walk the bridge in one direction as well. Donations are welcome and will benefit SVCC and its efforts to preserve and strengthen businesses in the Susquehanna Valley and to promote tourism to the area. In the case of rain, Bridge Bust will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13. For more details, readers may call 717684-5249 or visit www.parivertowns.com.
