Under the artistic direction of Lori Garling, the Midstate Ballet of Greater York Dance will present the holiday classic “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. “The Nutcracker” was written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816. The holiday ballet tradition takes place in two acts and tells the story of a Christmas Eve in the 1800s at the home of young Clara and her family during their holiday party. A mysterious magician, Drosselmeyer, makes a surprise visit and presents Clara with a unique Nutcracker doll. Thus begins the magical journey of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from a battle between toy soldiers and mice to the Kingdom of Snow and the Land of Sweets. In celebration of Midstate Bal-

let’s 20th anniversary of performing “The Nutcracker,” the Midstate Orchestra will be led by conductor Dr. Willis Rapp. Rapp has served on the faculty of many universities and retired in 2013 from Kutztown University. He has conducted the Reading Pops Orchestra since 2000. Greater York Dance received a Cultural Alliance Creative Impact Award community grant to assist in funding the orchestra this season. Guest dancers from Puerto Rico will share the stage with Midstate Ballet dancers and perform in the roles of Snow King, Spanish dancers, attendees in the party scene, Sugarplum and Cavalier. This year, Georgia Zengerle will play the role of Clara. She is a fifth-grade student in the West Shore School District. Reserved seat tickets may be purchased at www.appellcenter.org or 717-846-1111 or at the

box office. Greater York Dance aims to provide positive, healthy and enriching dance experiences to the people of the southcentral Pennsylvania region. Students of all levels, ages and abilities may choose programs of interest according to their dance priority with no regard to their ability to pay.

Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the

United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.YorkSymphony.org or call 717-846-1111.

Club Installs Blue Star Marker The Green Thumb Garden Club (GTGC) installed a Blue Star Memorial Highway marker at the Keystone Welcome Center on I-83 North, mile marker 2.5, Shrewsbury, on Sept. 19. GTGC member Iona Bradley had the idea to sponsor the marker four years ago, and she enlisted GTGC members’ support for the project. The marker is a tribute to all members of the U.S. armed forces. Placement was made in cooperation with PennDOT, District 8, York County, and the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. The Blue Star Memorial Marker program of the National Garden Clubs Inc. began in 1945 to honor the men and women serving in the armed forces during World War II. The blue star was chosen as the symbol for the program because of the star on flags displayed in homes and businesses, indicating family members were serving in the military. The desig-

nation of Blue Star Highways was achieved through petitions to state legislatures and cooperation with the Departments of Transportation. A uniform memorial marker was designed to identify the highways. Blue Star Memorial Markers extend across the United States to honor all members of the armed forces of the United States. Installation of the GTGC’s marker involved many people, such as GTGC members and friends Iona Bradley; Melanie Markowski, club president and landscape designer; Jossel Fears, landscape designer and plant provider; Judith Englert; and Maria Landry. GTGC members worked to raise funds. Richard Fears and John Morgan installed the marker. PennDOT facility administrator Frederick Hechler and PennDOT roadside specialists James Cessna and George Reigel made the site available and offered guidance. GTGC members planted

Brady Hilt, son of James and Krystal Hilt of Hellam, received his Eagle Scout Award on Sept. 16. He is a member of Troop 49, sponsored by St. James Lutheran Church in Hallam and led by Scoutmaster George Gayman. Brady is the 73rd Scout guided to the rank of Eagle by Gayman. For his Eagle Scout service project, Brady headed the refurbishing of the bandstand at the fellowship hall of Fairmount United Methodist Church in Hellam Township. His project consisted of replacing the floor joists, floor boards, posts, rails, and steps and the addition of new electrical wiring and lighting. Altogether, 10 workers logged 200 volunteer hours to complete the renovation. The bandstand is used not only for church events, but by many community members who rent the facilities throughout the year. Brady’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor took place at the fellowship hall and was held on the bandstand. State Rep. Keith Gillespie presented a Pennsylvania House of Representatives citation at the event. In addition, U.S. Rep. Scott Perry presented Brady with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition and an American flag that was flown over the United States Capitol. Brady presented mentor pins to Gayman; his grandfather Marlyn Stough, who provided valuable guidance and assistance with his Eagle project; and his father, who actively participated during many of Brady’s Scouting years. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, Brady was a Scout for 11 years. On his path to Eagle, he earned a total of 23 merit badges and became an Order of the Arrow Ordeal member. Within his troop, he has held the positions of scribe, assistant senior patrol leader, and senior patrol leader. Brady is a senior at Eastern York High School. He plays in the concert band, jazz band and marching band and belongs to

To promote recycling and celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) sponsored puppet show assembly programs in 14 York County elementary schools. The recycling-themed program was titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles.” Students saw ordinary household items recycled into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, reuse, and recycling of materials. The assembly programs ran through Friday, Nov. 16. Performances ran approximately 45 minutes and featured audience participation. YCSWA offered to sponsor up to 20 program performances for any

school in York County with students in grades one through six. Fourteen schools responded to the offer and received “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles” performances at no charge. The schools included Friendship Elementary, Kreutz Creek Elementary, Loganville Elementary, Manheim Elementary, Newberry Elementary, North Salem Elementary, Red Mill Elementary, Roundtown Elementary, St. Patrick’s, St. Rose of Lima, Southern Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Wrightsville Elementary, and Yorkshire Elementary.
