Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the
United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.YorkSymphony.org or call 717-846-1111.
Nathan Clark will be featured on Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto during York Symphony Orchestra’s season-opening concert on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.

The Pennsylvania Library Association recently recognized Martin Library in York for becoming a PA Forward Gold Star Library. The PA Forward Gold Star Library Award was presented during an awards ceremony at the library. According to York County Libraries, Martin Library is the first library in York County to achieve the distinction.
The PA Forward Star Library program recognizes libraries that clearly demonstrate their integration of PA Forward’s five key literacies - basic, information, civic and social, health, and financial - into library programming. Martin Library joins 60 libraries across the state that have achieved gold star recognition. Several libraries in York County are currently at the bronze and silver star achievement levels. According to Martin Library director Mina Edmondson, Martin Library’s adult services librarian, Sarah Fretz, learned
of the PA Forward Star program at the Pennsylvania Library Association’s annual conference and set out to accomplish all of the goals and surprise her with the achievement. In addition to Edmondson, speakers at the awards ceremony included Pennsylvania Library Association executive director Christi Buker, PA Forward project manager Brandi Hunter-Davenport, and York Mayor Michael Helfrich. Martin Library is a branch of York County Libraries. It is located at 159 E. Market St. in the city of York and was established in 1935.

People from all backgrounds create endowed funds at YCCF by rolling over their IRA distributions or selling stock to reduce their tax liability. In addition, YCCF prepares the YorkCounts indicators (www.yorkcounts.org) to track data trends on York County’s well-being, offering information on systemic community challenges. YCCF helps organizations to develop strategic approaches to not just treating problems but finding solutions. To learn more about YCCF, readers may visit www.yccf.org.

Covenant Moravian Church, 901 Cape Horn Road, York, will host a Christmas Eve Candlelight Lovefeast on Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public, and it will feature Christmas music, Scriptures, candles, fellowship, and the sharing of sugar cake and coffee during the service. The history of the Lovefeast began when Count Zinzendorf and the Moravians in Germany introduced a service of sharing food, prayer, religious conversation, and hymns in 1727. Moravians today have continued this custom when celebrating special occasions. The candles used during the Lovefeast are made of beeswax, reminding attendees of the purity of Jesus.
