This year, the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, 363 Locust St., is celebrating 40 years of serving the community. To honor the dozens of volunteers who run the not-forprofit thrift store, a catered banquet was held on July 27 at Manor Church. Attendees heard reflections from one of the store’s founding members, Ruth Charles, as well as updates from chairman of the board Nelson Hershey and current store manager Kathryn Ferree. In 1978, Ruth was volunteering at the Mount Joy Re-Uzit Shop (now the Mount Joy Gift and Thrift) when a manager approached her to see if she would consider forming a group of ladies to open a similar shop in Columbia. Ruth prayerfully gathered several women together who began looking for a small building in Columbia to use for the new not-for-profit shop. Like
other Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) thrift shops throughout the country, the new Columbia store would be volunteer-run and support the local and global relief and development efforts of MCC. “It was birthed by prayer, and we sought the Lord’s direction before we moved forward,” recalled Ruth. The ladies found a small space to rent a block north of the store’s current location that needed minimal renovations. With donations passed on from the excess at the Mount Joy store, the group of dedicated volunteers opened the doors of the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop on Dec. 15, 1978, with a warm reception from grateful neighbors and visitors. For many years, the volunteers would sort, price, and pack donations at the home of manager Grace Huber before transporting them back to the store to be displayed and sold. Eventually, the lack of space, combined with the shop’s growth and popularity, led See Columbia Re-Uzit pg 3

Hershey was one of several individuals that Ruth’s husband, Abe Charles, asked to serve on the original board of directors and take part in the search for a building to purchase. Abe served as bishop of what was then the Manor District of Mennonite Churches, where many of the store’s founders and volunteers attended. Abe, Paul Charles, and Hershey walked the streets of Columbia looking for a new storefront. “Nothing seemed right, but then I drove past (our current location) and it caught my eye,” recalled Hershey. caster community. The St. John Neumann School for Children and Families has been designed by Lancasterbased architect Steve Funk. Pyramid Construction, located in Wormleysburg, will serve as general contractor. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health estimates that the complete project, including the purchase and renovation of the building, will cost up to $6.45 million. The school will be located in the same building as the existing CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health’s Columbia Dental Center. Although the Dental Center and the school will be located in the same building, each will have specific entrances and will operate on distinct floors within the building. Renovations and construction on the building expansion are expected to begin in early 2019 and will not impact the dental center’s operation. The St. John Neumann School for Children and Families will have a family-focused approach that centers on the social-emotional development and health of
the children and families served. Families whose children attend the school will have access to an on-site family wellness coach to support the development of healthy family dynamics, as well as a family wellness case manager who assists families in accessing support services and programs throughout the community, including the CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health Dental Centers and Behavioral Health Center. The daily meals and snacks for children at the center will be freshly prepared on-site from locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and meats. Financially, a tuition discount program for residents of Columbia Borough has been set up to make child care affordable through a sliding-fee scale determined by household income levels. “Our family-focused approach to child care revamps the traditional model to incorporate health and social-emotional development as the central focus of all of the center’s academic activities and curriculums,” said See St. Joseph pg 6
YCSWA Posts Recycling News The recent free tire disposal program sponsored by the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) resulted in the proper disposal of 4.67 tons of tires. Fifty-one York County residents delivered 375 tires to the York County Resource Recovery Center where they were safely processed to produce power. This program was an outgrowth of the YCSWA’s participation in and support of Keep York Beautiful and its efforts to prevent and eliminate illegal dumping. Removing waste tires from communities helps clean up illegal dumpsites and reduces the spread of West Nile virus by eliminating potential mosquito breeding sources. Residents can and should place old tires out with their regular garbage. This special tire acceptance program was held to raise awareness that tires should be properly disposed of as household waste and to help prevent illegal dumping of tires. Tires collected at the curb with regular garbage must be off the rim and may not exceed 32” in diameter. Residents should contact their waste hauler for specifics on how many tires can be placed out with each pick-up. The YCSWA facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, reuse, recycling and resource recovery. The YCSWA is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center in Manchester Township and conducts a year-round free litter disposal program to encourage York County residents, organizations, civic groups, schools, and neighborhoods to clean up litter and illegal dumpsites. Waste collected in cleanup programs can be disposed of free of charge at the York County Resource Recovery Center. Preregistration is required. For more information about the free litter program, readers may call the YCSWA at 717-845-1066. Residents interested in helping to clean up an illegal dumpsite should contact Tom Smith at Keep York Beautiful at 717-840-2375 or tls35@psu.edu. Keep York Beautiful can assist with providing free gloves, bags, and safety vests.

Special Starwatch Event Scheduled The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will host a public Starwatch and Perseid Meteor shower observing event at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Aug. 11. The evening will begin at 8 p.m. with a screened astronomical presentation on the current night sky and a variety of astronomical topics. Attendees will experience the “train of planets” as Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars will all be visible in the evening sky. As an added bonus, attendees are invited to stay late and witness the Perseid Meteor shower. The Arc Recognizes Donors The Arc of York County recently recognized a new class of donors who have contributed significantly to its efforts of bringing respect and independence to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The donors were invited to a reception on June 21 at The Arc of York County’s Camp Pennwood, where each selected a leaf on the Philanthro-Tree mural. The name of each donor was permanently placed on the selected leaf to commemorate contributions made during the 2017-18 program year. This year’s leaves were claimed by various businesses and groups,

All schools in Pennsylvania will be required to publicly display a poster containing the statewide toll-free number for reporting suspected child abuse, beginning in the 2018-19 school year. Known as ChildLine, the toll-free hotline number to report suspected child abuse in Pennsylvania is 800-932-0313. Posting this critical information in schools will let students know they have somewhere to turn if they need to report abuse or neglect that they have suffered or if they suspect another child is being abused or neglected. The poster is required to be displayed in a high-traffic, public area widely used by students. The poster also would include the address of the Department of Human Services’ website that provides information and resources related to child protection. For more information, readers may visit www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov.

The York County Penn State Extension Office will host a community meeting on the spotted lanternfly at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9. The meeting will be held at the York County Annex Building, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York, in Room 1. During this information session, community members will hear from Tim Abbey, extension educator, on how the spotted lanternfly arrived in Pennsylvania, tips to identify the pest, what steps to take if the pest is found in York County, and its potential impacts to the region. The spotted lanternfly is black, around one inch long, with red and white spots on its wings and a yellow abdomen. Native to China, India, Japan, and Vietnam, it was first detected in Berks County in the fall of 2014. This insect has the potential to cause serious harm to Pennsylvania’s grape, hops, and logging industries. Currently, 13 counties east of York are under quarantine in an effort to stop/slow the spread of this invasive pest. More information on the spotted lanternfly can be found at https://extension.psu.edu /spotted-lanternfly.
