According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if See Teal Sisters pg 5

Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent,” explained

St. James Lutheran Church, 180 W. Market St., Hallam, recently celebrated George Gayman’s 50 years of service to Boy Scout Troop 49. During George’s time as Scoutmaster of Troop 49, 72 boys earned the title of Eagle Scout. He has attended two World Jamborees in England and Holland. George has also attended seven National Jamborees, the most recent one being held at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia. George and his wife, Shirley, became actively involved in the Cub Scouts in 1968. In 1970, George became a committee member for Troop 49, and in 1972 he became Scoutmaster of Troop 49, with Shirley serving as his right hand in all of the troop’s activities and endeavors. Teal Sisters from pg 1 the symptom lasts for more than two weeks, emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-inthe-blank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’ said Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you have cancer. “Most of the people in the
group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers, Lewandowski continued. “The important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time. Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else. The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer. “We’re not gloom and doom, said Radziewicz.
In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street
in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other locations as possible. To order teal ribbons and learn more about Turn the Towns Teal, readers may visit www.turnthetownsteal.org. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Teal Sisters will have an ovarian cancer awareness table at the Lancaster Barnstormers game at the team’s home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and one of the members will have the chance to throw the first pitch. Individuals and organizations that would like to inquire about having the Teal Sisters give an educational presentation on the risk factors and subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer may contact Radziewicz at conniesratt@comcast.net.

Forty-six local law enforcement agencies throughout south central Pennsylvania are joining the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the third targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Aug. 26. Southcentral Pennsylvania municipal departments are from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the third wave will aim to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating, and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other
aggressive actions will also be cited. During the last enforcement wave from March 19 to April 29, 45 participating municipal law enforcement agencies made contact with 4,376 vehicles, issuing 4,144 citations; 2,761 of those citations were speeding violations. In addition, 26 texting violations were cited, 18 fugitive apprehensions were made, and 27 impaired drivers were removed from roadways. The aggressive driving enforcement is a part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 235 municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Pennsylvania are participating. For more information, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

students cognitively, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Biblical principles are incorporated in every learning domain. The teachers at Christian School of York Preschool are all accredited, professional educators with degrees in early education, elementary education, child development, or more than one of these fields. The program and facility at Christian School of York Preschool are accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International, signifying strict adherence to best practices in every area, including curriculum, physical environment, teacher training and certification, and health and safety standards. The preschool facility was named for Dr. David N. Thompson, who briefly served as headmaster of the Christian School of York and had the vision for creating a stateof-the art Christian learning center for preschool students. Shortly after the blueprints were drawn, he was diagnosed with a fast-spreading pancreatic cancer that ultimately took his life before the opening of the preschool center. His vision remains a driving force of the overall mission of Christian School of York Preschool and the Christian School of York. Additionally, Christian School of York Preschool will now operate on an open admission model, allowing more students from the York and greater York region to attend the school. Readers may contact the admissions office at 717-767-6842 for more details. Christian School of York Preschool’s 12,000-square-foot Dr. David N. Thompson Center for Early Education was built specifically for preschool education and opened in 2009. It features large, bright classrooms; a dramatic playroom; an oversized recreation room; and a 4,000-square-foot, fenced-in, rubber-tiled play yard. The curriculum at Christian School of York Preschool is designed to grow the hearts and minds of young students through a variety of part- or fulltime, multi-day class options for prekindergartners ages 2 to 4. Iron Ridge To Present Concert Bethel United Methodist Church, 1674 Furnace Road, Brogue, has announced that its final summer outdoor concert will take place on Sunday, Aug. 26. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Iron Ridge, a traditional bluegrass band. Based in Hanover, Iron Ridge has performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The group is known for its threeand four-part harmonies, as well as its old-time traditional bluegrass in the style of Bill Monroe, Dr. Ralph Stanley, and others. Instead of having only one lead singer, the band allows all of its members to sing lead on various songs. A freewill offering will be received to support the group’s ministry. Free refreshments will be served following the concert. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The event will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather. For more information, readers may contact Howard at 717-246-1539 or Pastor Kim at 717-927-9380.
