Mount Pisgah Trinity UMC To Host Appalachian Craft Fair By Chelsea Peifer
Mount Pisgah Trinity United Methodist Church (UMC), 5615 Mount Pisgah Road, York, invites the community to an Appalachian Craft Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15. Admission is free, and the event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the items that will be for sale are created by residents who live in the rural areas surrounding the Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Ky. Organizer Sandy Eckard explained that Red Bird Mission purchases crafts from artists and craftspeople and markets them locally and at events throughout the country in order to create economic opportunities for the residents. More than 80 crafters will contribute items to the craft fair, Eckard said. A wide variety of handmade crafts will be available for purchase, including jewelry, pottery, wreaths, wooden furniture and utensils, coal carvings, jams and jellies, musical
instruments, woven rugs, Christmas ornaments and Nativity sets, brooms, handpainted gourds, corn shuck flowers and dolls, and baskets made of native creek willow and honeysuckle. Wooden pull toys, soft dolls, books, and other toys will also be part of the selection. Mount Pisgah Trinity UMC hosted a Red Bird Mission Appalachian Craft Fair for the first time in 2016 and received so much positive feedback that members decided to do it again. Mount Pisgah Trinity UMC pastor Keith Schmuck has participated in work camps at Red Bird Mission on five occasions over the past several years. Schmuck is drawn to caring for the Appalachian people. “It’s a different culture in our country that has been forgotten by most of the world,” said Schmuck, adding that the folks who live around Red Bird Mission must travel nearly an hour to reach civilization and that job opportunities are slim. that folks need to know to provide immediate care to someone with life-threatening injuries. The event is free and open to the public. To register, visit www.svems.org and click on the education tab and sign up on the Stop the Bleed page. The deadline to register will be 3 p.m. on Sept. 13. “The purpose of the event is to educate all who want to learn how to act and react in an active shooter situation and learn how to control bleeding,” explained Terri Givens, business development manager for SVEMS. Participants will have the chance to learn how to apply pressure to a wound, pack a wound with gauze, and use a tourniquet. Givens said that to make the experience as realistic as possible, SVEMS operations manager Adam Marden uses cranberry juice so that participants get a sense of what it is really like to control bleeding. Hellam Township Police Chief Doug Pollock will discuss what to do in an active shooter situation and go over Run, Hide, Fight techniques. SVEMS education manager Rob Walker will share information on how to triage injured individuals, and participants may engage in hands-on practice following the lecture. Givens noted that in addition to helping people to prepare for potential emergencies, the course provides knowledge that is useful in other situations, such as getting a cut or witnessing an automobile accident. Church To Host 9/11 Service By Chelsea Peifer
Military personnel, veterans, firefighters, police officers, and emergency first responders deserve recognition for the sacrifices they make and the way that they willingly put their lives on the line for others, and honoring those individuals is one of the main reasons behind the annual 9/11 Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance planned by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia. “The purpose is to honor God and all those who serve the public, stated event organizer Gene Merrell. This year’s event is slated to take place on Sunday, Sept. 9, beginning at 9 a.m. in Locust Street Park in Columbia. The community is invited to attend and encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. The service will begin with a procession led by the Catholic War Veterans Post 1305 color guard. Members of various community organizations will march in the procession, including individuals from the Columbia Borough Police

Proceeds from the tour will benefit the ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. Tour chairperson and Marietta Community House board member Lauralee Baker described it as a classic walking garden tour with everything from tiny to larger gardens and both sunny and shaded spaces. At the property of Audrey and Jeremy Pombo, guests will find themselves in a shaded refuge of relaxation dotted with mature evergreens and trees. “We like to say it’s a little oasis back here, because you don’t really expect it, Audrey said. The backyard garden features several tiers that the Pombos appreciate particularly when entertaining. Wisteria stretches from the property edge to the side porch where rocking chairs rest. A pathway of pavers and brick leads to a bathing pool in the yard’s third and final level. Carol and Keith Shadle will welcome guests into their beautiful shade garden. Much of the shade is thanks to an enormous dawn redwood tree which stands in the center of the backyard and was planted by Keith 20 years ago. A screened-in porch and slate patio lead to a brick walkway surrounded by hydrangeas, hostas, Jack-in-the-pulpit, ferns, white coralberry, bear paw succulents, and many other plants. “I have no experience with gardening; I just try what I like and see if it works, shared Carol. Whimsical touches abound, from a red fire hydrant the couple knew had to make a way into their garden to an antique Marietta weathervane and lots of other small, well-thought-out touches. Flowering plants enhance the landscape as well, and the Shadles’ beagle, Gabby, may or may not be spotted meandering throughout the garden. The tour will also feature gardens at the homes of Carrie

According to Schmuck, Red Bird Mission began in the early 1900s to provide education and Christian evangelism ministries to area residents. Today the mission offers medical assistance, dental help, job training, and a school for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, in addition to facilitating work camps with volunteers yearround. “Every kind of service you think you could use, Red Bird provides, remarked Schmuck. Arts And Craft Show Set For Sept. 1 And 2 By Chelsea Peifer
Weavers, spinners, painters, glass blowers, woodworkers, photographers, clothing designers, sculptors, potters, quilters, and makers of jewelry, candles, brooms, baskets, cards, iron, and leather crafts are just some of the artisans and craftspersons who will share their talents at the 31st annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. This year’s event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Fortyfive of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made,
such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At

A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all
9/11 Service from pg 5 uniform or wearing a hat or something else signifying which branch or group they serve or have served in. “Sometimes first responders have to get up in the service and leave because of an emergency,” Merrell said. “Seeing that really impresses the people - that these are our 24/7 public servants.” Following the service, everyone is invited to enjoy a free picnic brunch at the park served by members of St. Paul’s at approximately 10 a.m. This will mark the ninth year that St. Paul’s has hosted a remembrance service in the park for the community.
Merrell is grateful to Mayor Leo Lutz for his ongoing support of the event. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is located at 555 Locust St., Columbia. Everyone is invited to attend weekly Sunday worship services at 9 a.m. For more information on the 9/11 Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance, readers may call 717-764-4746.
