American Legion Post Celebrates Anniversary American Legion Post 594 held a 100-year anniversary celebration on March 17 to commemorate the founding of the American Legion in 1919. During the celebration, Post 594 honored the Middletown and Lower Swatara Firemen of the Year and Policemen of the Year, as well as children who
participated in an essay contest focused on homeless veterans. Post 594 provided meals for a total of approximately 150 guests and members during the celebration. Gov. Tom Wolf recently issued a proclamation recognizing March 15 as Pennsylvania American Legion Day in
honor of the Legion’s 100th anniversary. In his proclamation, Wolf noted that the American Legion supports veterans and their families, mentors youths, promotes patriotism, and promotes strong national security. On March 15, 1919, the American Legion was founded in Paris, France, by
members of the American Expeditionary Force. Since then, the Pennsylvania American Legion has expanded to include more than 140,000 legionnaires and more than 120,000 family members in 700-plus Pennsylvania American Legion posts, squadrons, chapters, and units.
American Legion Post 594 held an event on March 17 to celebrate the American Legion’s 100th anniversary. Among the activities were a meal, opportunities for socializing, and recognition of local students and first responders.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Harrisburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honored the late Dr. Ruth Matilda Freyberger, who resided in the local area. Freyberger was born in Lancaster on Nov. 15, 1912. According to the Harrisburg Chapter of the DAR, Freyberger was the first woman to receive a doctorate in art education from Penn State. She taught in New Holland, Huntingdon, and Hershey and eventually was a professor at Illinois State University for 31 years until her retirement in 1983. Freyberger continued to focus on art education with her legacies, specifically children’s art education, with endowments to include the Freyberger Gallery of Art at Penn State University - Berks County Campus and the Freyberger Children’s Art Collection at Boise State University in Idaho.
On March 14, the Harrisburg Chapter of the DAR presented the award for Freyberger for Women in American History, with the assistance of Margaret Wasson, DAR Harrisburg Chapter member, and Marilyn Fox, representative from the Freyberger Gallery at Penn State University Berks County Campus. Fox provided an overview of Freyberger’s life and what her legacy endowment has been able to provide to the art gallery and community, as well as how it has provided various educational opportunities. The DAR was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Harrisburg Chapter was founded in 1894 and aims to locally continue to preserve the legacies of the Founding Fathers and the patriots who fought for the independence of the United States of America. In May, the chapter will celebrate its 125th year and the launch of a chapter history including biographies of more than 60
member Margaret Wasson (left) and chapter regent Lisa L. Lugovich (center), recently honored the late Dr. Ruth Matilda Freyberger. included four sets of plastic silverware. In other words, someone at the restaurant packed my order, took a second to think about it, and then estimated that there must be at least four people eating to require such a large amount of food. Too bad I was eating by myself. There’s nothing like feeling fat before dinner. Recipe of the Week Amazing Baked Breaded Chicken Breasts Ingredients: 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 cups Italian seasoned bread crumbs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a shallow baking dish. 2. Season chicken breasts. Coat chicken on all sides with mayonnaise, and roll in bread crumbs until coated. Place coated breasts into the prepared pan. 3. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until chicken is no longer pink in the middle and the juices run clear. ***Use aluminum foil to keep food moist, cook it evenly, and make clean-up easier.
