The Susquehanna Chorale will present its spring concert series, “Singing the Dance of Life,” on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11. The chorale is a nationally recognized adult chamber ensemble of 36 auditioned singers. It was founded in 1981 by artistic director and conductor Linda L. Tedford. The spring concerts will be performed on May 10 at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, and May 11 at the High Center on the campus of Messiah College, 1 College Ave., Grantham. Both concerts will begin at 8 p.m. Guest artist Todd Goranson will accompany the chorale on saxophone. In addition, Goranson will perform a preconcert recital 15 minutes before each performance. Quiet moments are captured in Ola Gjeilo’s “Evening Prayer” and Howard Helvey’s arrangement of “Steal Away,” both accompanied by saxophone, as well as in Eric Whitacre’s “Seal Lullaby.”

The Lady Raiders picked up win number one of the week on April 30th, topping Camp Hill, 12-2 in five innings. Noelle Zimmerman earned the win, allowing just three hits and two unearned second inning runs. She added five strikeouts and no walks to cap her day. Martinez picked up her second and final RBI of the game on a fielder’s choice to stretch the lead to five runs at 7-2. The Lady Raiders ended the game with a five-run burst in the fifth that started with a Hailey Hockenberry single and ended with a Carly Dupes base hit. In between was a two-run double by Zimmerman that made it 10-2 and a string of Camp Hill errors that made it 11-2. Middletown’s lead stretched to 14-1 after three innings thanks to a string of Lady Bubbler miscues coupled with a Balliet single. Another two runs came in the fourth, highlighted by a Dupes RBI single that made it 16-2. Boiling Springs nearly extended the game with a three run fifth but Jenna Alford was able to pick up the final two outs to secure the complete game victory. Alford scattered seven hits over five innings with four of the five runs counting as earned. The hurler added one strikeout and one walk to her winning effort. Middletown needed just three innings to smother William Penn on the 3rd, picking up the 19-0 win by scoring all but four of their runs with two outs. That included all five first inning runs starting with Katie’s Fitzpatrick’s one-run double. Balliet followed with a double of her own to plate Fitzpatrick while a single from Martinez pushed Balliet across for a quick 3-0 lead. One of six William Penn errors of the game finished the five-run rally. Middletown’s two-out theatrics
picked up in the bottom of the second with the lead already stretched to 9-0 thanks to doubles by Balliet and Martinez and a fielder’s choice on Akakpo-Martin’s infield contact. Dupes, with help from another Lady Bearcat error, stretched the lead to 10-0 while another Fitzpatrick double coupled with another error made it a 13-0 game. Balliet’s second double of the frame made it 14-0 and capped her three hit, three RBI effort. An Ulrich single plus another William Penn error made it 16-0, setting the stage for Zimmerman’s pinch-hit dagger which was a three-run triple to right that finished the Lady Raider scoring. Madison Gipe needed just 27 pitches to earn the three-inning victory, allowing just one hit while striking out two with no walks. Middletown’s 11-1 loss to James Buchanan on the 29th was also a fiveinning affair with the Lady Rockets chasing Gipe after two and one third innings. Zimmerman covered the final one and two third innings to finish things off in the circle for Middletown. Together the pair was on the hook for 16 hits, 11 runs with one strikeout and one walk. Fitzpatrick picked up one of two Lady Raider hits in the fourth which
allowed Dupes to score after her one out walk. Ulrich accounted for the other Middletown hit, a second inning single. BASEBALL Your average high school spring sports season can be tricky to navigate with pitfalls like rivalry games, injuries and weather-related issues adding up to make for an interesting season. The Middletown baseball team has handled all of that, making the 2019 season an interesting one. The Blue Raiders opened the season with three straight losses but followed by ripping off six straight wins, seemingly turning their season around. Things took another turn with another three-game slide, this one closing out April. The final setback in that stretch was a 10-0, five inning loss to Camp Hill on the 29th where the Blue Raiders mustered just three hits. Scott Ash, Garrett Miller and Jaxson Senior split those hits with Ash also taking the loss for his four innings of work on the mound. Ash surrendered just two hits to go with seven strikeouts and three walks but took the loss after allowing the Lions first two runs. Brady Keyser took over for Ash in the fifth and absorbed the remaining eight Camp Hill runs.

Middletown’s Hayli Akakpo-Martin breaks from first base on the Raider infield grounder in last Tuesday’s Capital Division game with Camp Hill.
COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition The Blue Raiders did get back on the right side of things on May 1st with a 14-3 thrashing of Steel-High. Miller enjoyed the easy five inning win, ringing up nine Rollers while issuing just one walk to go with three hits allowed. All that led to three Steel-High runs but two Middletown errors meant just one earned run for Miller. Blue Raiders needed just five hits to 10-run rule the Rollers thanks to a staggering 12 walks issued by three Steel-High hurlers. The bulk of the damage came in the fourth inning but Middletown started back in the second with a quick two run burst. The Blue Raiders loaded the bases with three walks and proceeded to score two runs without putting the ball in play. A wild pitch made it 1-0 before Ash picked up his first RBI of the game with the rarely seen ‘hit by pitch’ RBI for a 2-0 Middletown lead. The Rollers countered with a two-run top of the third that knotted the game but that did not stop a 12-run onslaught an inning later. The Blue Raiders scored on just three hits and enjoyed help in the form of a walk, three wild pitches and three errors. One of those three hits was a triple by Ash that made it a 5-2 game and gave him his second RBI. Justin Yohn poked his lone hit of the game, a single to left that
plated Tim Wagner and Jaxson Senior for an 11-2 Middletown lead. Two of the three Rollers errors in the frame allowed the final two runs to score for the 14-2 final. Middletown found themselves on the opposite end of a five-inning game on May 3rd with the Blue Raiders falling to Lower Dauphin by a 10-0 final. Ash was the first of four Middletown pitchers to take a crack at slowing down the Falcons, surviving two and one third innings before giving way to Keyser who lasted just one third of an inning. Mike Tuffy covered the final out of the third and all of the fourth with AJ Stains getting one out in the fifth before LD stretched their lead to a game ending 10 runs. Together the quartet combined for eight strikeouts and seven walks with nine of the 10 Lower Dauphin runs falling in the earned column despite three Middletown errors. Miller, Senior and Cam Peters accounted for the offense with a single each. TRACK The track and field teams traveled to Elliottsburg on May 2nd to battle West Perry in their second to last dual meet of the regular season. The result was an 83-53 loss for the boy’s and a 129-21 loss for the Lady Raiders. Krea Shaeffer and Joci Koser accounted for the only two wins on
the girls’ side with Shaeffer taking the 100H in 19.2 and Koser the 300H with a time of 51.22. A trio of boys each collected two solo wins each with Chris Joseph tacking on a relay victory to his double wins. Joseph captured the 300H (43.02) and the long jump (19-11) in his solo endeavors while teaming up with Chandler Martin, Richie Sykes and Jose Lopez for a winning time of
45.12 in the 400m relay. Will Brown swept the distance events with a 4:40 in the 1600m and a 10:50 in his 3200m victory. Arthur Dash picked up the shotput title with a toss of 41-10 and the discus title with a top throw of 137-8. Lopez and Tajae Broadie accounted for the final two wins with Lopez taking the 100m in 10.93 while Broadie claimed the high jump by clearing 5-8.

County Residents Attend 4-H Capital Days Local youths were among 117 4-H participants from across the state who met in Harrisburg recently for the annual Pennsylvania 4-H Capital Days program. Attending from Dauphin County were Jacob Bell, Jonestown; Gabrielle Evans, Halifax; Alexandria Neff, Harrisburg; Alyssa Neff, Harrisburg; Abigail O’Shell, Hummelstown; Madison Shaw, Harrisburg; chaperone Julia Tilley, Harrisburg; Keegan Tilley, Harrisburg; and chaperone Ronald Tilley, Harrisburg. Sponsored by Pennsylvania 4-H, Capital Days is a three-day educational program designed to engage 4-H members in the political process and prepare them to become active and engaged citizens of Pennsylvania. According to organizers, participating youths gain leadership and citizenship skills. During the event, participants learn about parliamentary procedure, how to read legislation, and party roles and affiliations. They then use that knowledge to discuss and debate a bill and participate in a mock legislative session. This year, delegates discussed a bill
to provide for notation on transcripts of students suspended or expelled from institutions of higher education. Other workshops included topics on advocacy, civil discourse, elections, and the voting process. Delegates also participated in an escape room where they had to work together to solve puzzles that would reveal clues needed to crack the code and open the safe. In addition, delegates had the opportunity to tour the Capitol and have their photo taken on the rotunda steps. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding spoke to the delegates about 4-H and about the Pennsylvania Farm Bill’s Ag and Youth Grant program. There was also an unannounced visit from Gov. Tom Wolf. The event wrapped up with a legislative brunch, during which delegates talked with their legislators one-onone about 4-H and their 4-H experiences. Administered in Pennsylvania by Penn State Extension, 4-H is a nonformal educational youth-development program of the national Cooperative Extension System.

information or representatives of businesses that would like to be part of the event may contact Scott A. Johnson, president of the Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, at 717-381-5645. The Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Elizabethtown. It was created in the spring of 2018 with the mission to provide scholarships to high school seniors who intend to pursue higher education in the arts. The fund is named for Meghan Marie Johnson, a 2017 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School who died at the age of 18 on Nov. 21, 2017, after a two-year battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Meghan had been active in her high school drama club and theater program, as well as several community theaters. The organization launched www.imdoinit.org in the fall of 2018, and through a fundraising partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, the website raises money for glioblastoma brain cancer research and awareness. All donations received by
www.imdoinit.org go directly to the University of Pittsburgh. A new program, Camp Meghan, will launch at Lower Dauphin Middle School in Hummelstown in August. The oneday camp for eighth-grade boys and girls will feature a professional curriculum-based program that will focus on anxiety and depression in teenagers. The program will be provided in partnership with Lower Dauphin Communities That Care. Team Meghan is the fundraising division for the Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, imdoinit.org, and Camp Meghan. The Team Meghan 3K Walk/Run in Hershey, a community yard sale, and the Cancer Warriors Photo Shoot are a few of Team Meghan’s events. Team Meghan is active on social media.
Team Meghan, founded in memory of Meghan M. Johnson (pictured), will hold a Cancer Warriors Photo Shoot on Saturday, May 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Gifford Pinchot State Park near Lewisberry.
Career Event from pg 1 The Capital Region Partnership for Career Development hosted the Showcase Luncheon at the Best Western in Harrisburg for the mid-state’s superintendents and career educators on April 30. The event featured career exploration experiences from students in Dauphin and Cumberland counties. Two Lower Dauphin High School (LDHS) seniors spoke at the event. Elyse
Erdman shared about her experience in the internship program at Hope Springs Farm, and Quinn McMonagle shared about her internship experience at the Vista School. Pictured on front: Lower Dauphin High School students Quinn McMonagle (second from left) and Elyse Erd-
man (second from right) recently spoke at the Showcase Luncheon hosted by the Capital Region Partnership for Career Development. They were accompanied by (from left) Cindy Markham, Lower Dauphin School District work experience transition coordinator; Robert Schultz, superintendent; and Renee McMinn, cooperative education coordinator.

Team Meghan will hold the Cancer Warriors Photo Shoot on Saturday, May 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Gifford Pinchot State Park, located on Rosstown Road near Lewisberry. Individuals currently battling cancer, as well as cancer survivors, are invited to visit the park to have their pictures taken professionally. The event is an opportunity for those struggling with the impact of cancer to feel good about themselves and enjoy a spring day on the 2,000-plus acres of Gifford Pinchot State Park. This event is free and includes professional pictures, professional makeup application, and catering. Preregistration is requested and can be done at www.teammeghan.org. Additional event details are also available on this website. Those who would like more

The 18th annual Pinnacle Cup Team Match Play Tournament will take place on Monday, June 10, at the Royal Manchester Golf Links, 5700 Board Road, Mount Wolf. In the past 17 years, more than 500 players from nine states have played in the event, which has raised more than $75,000 for the GEARS Camp Ladybug Summer Program and Hershey’s Children’s Miracle Network. The two groups have been the golf tournament’s main beneficiaries. “A match play tournament is very unusual, especially involving a charity event,” explained tournament director Clair Dale Treese. “In match play, every hole is important. The players like that ... they have to make a shot for their team. But by using a scramble method of play, some of the pressure is taken off the individual knowing they have a partner. We stress this is a friendly competition, but there is still an element of ‘butterflies’ when you really need to make a good golf shot.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of the course. Each team will play three matches of nine holes each for a total of 27 holes overall, and teams that qualify after the three initial matches will continue to the single-elimination championship match play rounds. In those matches, each team will play best-of-three holes. The final two teams will play to determine an overall tournament team champion. Matches will begin at 8:15 a.m., and lunch will be served at 2 p.m. The championship rounds will start at approximately 3:15 p.m., with the presentation of the trophy and prizes for the champions, along with the second- and thirdplace teams, at approximately 5 p.m. Team registration and sponsor forms are available by contacting Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@ centurylink.net. The team entry, which must be postmarked by Wednesday, May 22, will include access to a practice range, the use of a cart, 27 holes of golf, prizes and the luncheon. There is an early

Chatter Hi everyone! I love old men. They have molded me into the strong Christian woman I am today! Some of the best years of my adult life were at Bible studies at the Riverside Chapel with a bunch of “Old Geezers” like the ones described in the following piece. Most of them are gone now, but they will forever be in my heart (Johnny, Burky, Bim, Harold, and Helen - a female old geezer)! I think there is only one of my Bible study geezers left. That one is Fred Auch of Londonderry Township. Fred, I love you with all my heart and I thank you for everything you taught me. I really do love you more than words could ever express, and I could never thank you enough for the peace you helped put in my heart. Old Geezers “Geezers” (slang for an old man) are easy to spot: At sporting events, during the playing of the national anthem, Old Geezers hold their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Geezers remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy, and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Jet Age, and the Moon Landing, not to mention Vietnam. If you bump into an Old Geezer on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Geezer on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Geezers trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Geezers hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain

the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Geezers get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don’t like any filth on TV or in movies. Old Geezers have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it’s about their grandchildren. It’s the Old Geezers who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old Geezers with their decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Geezers! Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Charlotte Ehrhart of Middletown! Her cake-day is May 8. I hope your day is as awesome as you are, Charlotte! Happy birthday to Paul Thompson of Middletown! His cake-day is May 9. Joke of the Week Jim strode into John’s Stable looking to buy a horse. “Listen here,” said John. “I’ve got just the horse you’re looking for; the only thing is, he was trained by an interesting fellow. He doesn’t go and stop the usual way. The way to get him to stop is to scream, “Heyhey!” and the way to get him to go is to scream, “Thank God.” Jim nodded his head. “Fine with me. Can I take him for a test run?” Jim was having the time of his life. “This horse sure could run!” he thought to himself. Jim was speeding down the dirt road when he suddenly saw a cliff up ahead. “Stop!” screamed Jim, but the horse kept on going. No matter how much he tried, Jim could not remember the words to get it to stop. “Yoyo!” screamed Jim, but the horse just kept on speeding ahead. It was 5 feet from the cliff when Jim suddenly remembered! “Heyhey!” Jim screamed. The horse skidded to a halt just one inch from the cliff. Jim could not believe his good fortune! He looked up to the sky, raised his hands in the air, breathed a deep sigh of relief, and said with conviction, “Thank God.” Food for Thought The greater your knowledge of the goodness and grace of God on your life, the more likely you are to praise Him in the storm. - Matt Chandler Have a great week, everybody!

AHA Provides Hats To Families The American Heart Association recently enlisted the help of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to distribute a special winter gift to local families. More than 600 handknitted red infant hats packaged with health information for parents were to be distributed to throughout the food bank’s network of partner organizations. The effort is part of the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts program. The Little Hats, Big Hearts program started in February 2014 in Chicago and has now expanded to local projects in nearly every state. This is the fourth year for the program in central Pennsylvania. It grew from a few hundred hats distributed to Lancaster County hospitals in 2016 to thousands of hats distributed to hospitals and other organizations throughout the region last year. In addition to using red hats to raise awareness of heart disease and congenital heart defects, Little Hats, Big Hearts also aims to drive awareness for the American Heart Association’s Support Network, an online forum for families affected by heart disease and stroke.
