Seminar To Spotlight Veterans Court Program Retirees To Hold Supreme Court Justice Debra Todd and Pennsylvania Adjutant General Anthony Carrelli. Veterans treatment courts serve veterans involved in the justice system due to a substance use disorder, mental health disorder, or trauma. Veterans treatment courts are part of a number of problem-solving courts statewide and are a collaborative initiative between the courts, district attorneys, public defenders, the VA, and numerous agencies for veterans. Veterans who complete their courtsupervised programs and graduate may have the charges that brought them to
court dismissed and/or their term of supervision reduced. In addition, their criminal records may be expunged. Veterans treatment courts have a 74% successful graduation rate. Free of charge, the session includes lunch and offers three Continuing Legal Education and Continuing Judicial Education credits. Registration is required. For more details and registration, readers may visit https://commonwealthlaw.widener .edu and look under Prospective Students, Why Widener, and then Events. Museum To Continue “Lessons In History” The National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, will offer the ninth presentation in the 2019 Lessons in History Speaker Series on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. “The Yankee Plague: Escaped Union Prisoners and the Collapse of the Confederacy” will be shared by Dr. Lorien Foote, the Patricia and Bookman Peters Professor in History at Texas A&M University. During the last winter of the Civil War, nearly 3,000 Union prisoners escaped from Confederate prisons in the Carolinas and fled toward Union Army lines. Black and white Southerners fed, hid, and guided the fugitives across hundreds of miles of dangerous terrain. Foote will share what the journey of escaped prisoners reveals about the transformation of the homefront to a battlefront
inside the Confederacy and how the movement of prisoners of war ultimately shaped the contours of the war’s final military campaigns. Foote is the author of four books on the American Civil War and numerous articles and essays. Her digital humanities project, which is mapping the escape and movement of 3,000 federal prisoners of war, can be explored at www.ehistory.org/ projects/fugitive-Federals.html. She is the co-editor, along with Earl J. Hess, of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of the Civil War. The 2019 Lessons in History program is free to the public. Regular museum admission applies for entrance to the museum galleries. For more information and a complete listing of events at the museum, readers may visit www.national civilwarmuseum.org or call 717260-1861.

Neighborhood Hi, everyone! OK, I think it is starting to get a little cooler, maybe. I like it when the air is just a bit crisper and cooler and I feel comfy in a sweater or a hoodie. I am ready for that kind of weather now. Heaven & Hell A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, “Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.” The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms, and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, “You have seen Hell.” They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, “I don’t understand.” “It is simple,” said the Lord. “It requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.” Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to my handsome nephew-cousin (hahaha!) Adam Arnold of Middletown! Kiwanis Halloween Parade The Kiwanis Club of Middletown’s 66th annual Halloween Parade is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 21. Parade information and registration information are now open at https://kiwanisclubofmiddletown.com. Registration will close on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Questions about the parade may be emailed to middletownparade@aol.com. There is lots of space open for registrations in the Cutest and Original Individual cash prize categories. Volunteers Needed! I am still looking for one regular volunteer for Meals On Wheels and as many substitute volunteers as possible for the Lower Swatara Township area. The one “regular” volunteer would deliver meals to shut-ins and elderly individuals once every three weeks on a Wednesday morning. That would mean at least once a month, at the most twice a month. “Substitute” volunteers fill in when the regulars need to take their day off. You do not have to live in Lower Swatara to be a volunteer. So if you have time and would like to help, please call me at my job. My number is 717-939-9377, ext. 3003. Thanks! Tonya Random Thought When a company offers me a better price after I cancel their subscription, they’re just admitting they were overcharging me. Recipe of the Week Easy Pumpkin Crisp (Something a little different then pumpkin pie … serve warm with a scoop of ice cream for an extra treat!) Ingredients: 1 can pumpkin (15 ounces) 1 egg 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup regular sour cream 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Joke of the Week Teacher: “If I gave you two cats and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “No, listen carefully… If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!” Johnny: “Because I’ve already got a cat!” Food for Thought Forgiveness is unlocking the door to set someone free and realizing you were the prisoner.
3/4 cup butter (melted) 1 cup pecans (chopped) 1 package butter flavor yellow cake mix (18 ounces) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Blend together in a medium size bowl the first 6 ingredients. 3. Pour into a 13-by-9-inch baking dish that has been lightly greased. 4. Now take cake mix and sprinkle evenly over pumpkin mix. Drop pecans evenly over cake mix then drizzle the melted butter on top of pecans. Do not stir. 5. Bake for 1 hour. Let cool for 10 to 15 minutes, then serve. Tip of the Week Use coarse sea salt and a grapefruit to clean your showers and tubs! Pour some coarse sea salt in a bowl, cut the grapefruit in half, dip one half of the grapefruit in the salt, and scrub away! With the help of the citric acid from the grapefruit and the scrubbing action of the salt, you can kill stains in your sinks and showers instantly. Fact of the Week German chocolate cake is named after a guy named Sam German, not the country. 717-691-1712
