Each candidate gave a speech detailing why he was seeking a vote for the desired office, and he then fielded questions from his peers. Ballots were cast, and Life Scout Jason O’Donnell collected and tallied the results. Star Scout Brayden Harris was selected as the SPL, the highest youth leadership position in the troop. He will work closely with the Scoutmaster to plan and lead troop meetings and activities. Brayden will appoint junior leaders, determine what Scout skills to practice, and be an integral part of the 2020 troop calendar. He said he would like to improve the troop’s electronic communication. Jesse Reigle, a First Class Scout, was voted to the position of ASPL. Chatter Hi, everyone! Oh my goodness, I love the fall! I love wearing hoodies (I also love wearing tank tops), I love wearing my long pants (I also love wearing capris and shorts), and I love my boots (I also love my flip-flops and sandals). So, OK, I love the summer too … which is what is great about fall in Pennsylvania - I can wear all that stuff in one day! Prayers ARE Answered This story was written by a doctor who worked in central Africa... One night I had worked hard to help a mother in the labor ward; but in spite of all we could do, she died, leaving us with a tiny premature baby and a crying 2-year-old daughter. We would have difficulty keeping the baby alive, as we had no incubator (we had no electricity to run an incubator). We also had no special feeding facilities. Although we lived on the equator, nights were often chilly with treacherous drafts. One student midwife went for the box we had for such babies and the cotton wool that the baby would be wrapped in. Another went to stoke up the fire and fill a hot water bottle. She came back shortly in distress to tell me that in filling the bottle, it had burst (rubber perishes easily in tropical climates). “And it is our last hot water bottle!” she exclaimed. As in the West, it is no good crying over spilled milk, so in central Africa it might be considered no good crying over burst water bottles. They do not grow on trees, and there are no drugstores down forest pathways. “All right,” I said, “put the baby as near the fire as you safely can, and sleep between the baby and the door to keep it free from drafts. Your job is to keep the baby warm.” The following noon, as I did most days, I went to have prayers with any of the orphanage children who chose to gather with me. I gave the youngsters various suggestions of things to pray about and told them about the tiny baby. I explained our problem about keeping the baby warm enough, mentioning the hot water bottle and that the baby could so easily die if it got chills. I also told them of the 2year-old sister, crying because her mother had died. During prayer time, one 10-year old girl, Ruth, prayed with the usual blunt conciseness of our African children. “Please, God,” she prayed, “send us a water bottle. It’ll be no good tomorrow, God, as the baby will be dead, so please send it this afternoon.” While I gasped inwardly at the audacity of the prayer, she added, “And while You are about it, would You please send a dolly for the little girl so she’ll know You really love her?” As often with children’s prayers, I was put on the spot. Could I honestly say “amen”? I just did not believe that God could do this. Oh, yes, I know that He can do everything; the Bible says so. But there are limits, aren’t there? The only way God could
answer this particular prayer would be by sending me a parcel from homeland. I had been in Africa for almost four years at that time, and I had never, ever received a parcel from home. Anyway, if anyone did send me a parcel, who would put in a hot water bottle? I lived on the equator! Halfway through the afternoon, while I was teaching in the nurses’ training school, a message was sent that there was a car at my front door. By the time I reached home, the car had gone, but there, on the veranda, was a large, 22-pound parcel. I felt tears pricking my eyes. I could not open the parcel alone, so I sent for the orphanage children. Together we pulled off the string, carefully undoing each knot. We folded the paper, taking care not to tear it unduly. Excitement was mounting. Some 30 or 40 pairs of eyes were focused on the large cardboard box. From the top, I lifted out brightly colored, knitted jerseys. Eyes sparkled as I gave them out. Then there were the knitted bandages for the leprosy patients, and the children looked a little bored. Then came a box of mixed raisins and sultanas - that would make a batch of buns for the weekend. Then, as I put my hand in again, I felt the ... could it really be? I grasped it and pulled it out - yes, a brand-new, rubber hot water bottle. I cried. I had not asked God to send it; I had not truly believed that He could. Ruth was in the front row of the children. She rushed forward, crying out, “If God has sent the bottle, He must have sent the dolly too!” Rummaging down to the bottom of the box, she pulled out the small, beautifully dressed dolly. Her eyes shone! She had never doubted! Looking up at me, she asked, “Can I go over with you and give this dolly to that little girl, so she’ll know that Jesus really loves her?” That parcel had been on the way for five whole months. Packed up by my former Sunday school class, whose leader had heard and obeyed God’s prompting to send a hot water bottle, even to the equator. And one of the girls had put in a dolly for an African child - five months before, in answer to the believing prayer of a 10-year-old to bring it “that afternoon.” “Before they call, I will answer.” Isaiah 65:24 Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to our nephew Chase Vandegrift of Lower Swatara Township! Recipe of the Week Parmesan Potato Wedges Ingredients 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon garlic salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon paprika 4 medium baking potatoes (about 8 ounces each) Cooking spray Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix first five ingredients. 2. Cut each potato lengthwise into eight wedges; place in a parchment-lined 15-by-10-by-1-inch pan. Spritz with cooking spray; sprinkle with cheese mixture. Bake until tender, about 30 minutes. Tip of the Week How to easily slice steak fries for the recipe listed above: Use an apple slicer! Cut one end of the potato for stability, then push an apple slicer through. It will make perfect-sized and perfect-shaped potato wedges to use with the great recipe above! You can also use sweet potatoes! Fact of the Week Ergophobia is the fear of work. Joke of the Week A large company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO. This new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning on a wall. The room was full of workers, and he wanted to let them know that he meant business! The new CEO walked up to the guy leaning against the wall and asked, “How much money do you make a week?” A little surprised, the young fellow looked at him and replied, “I make $300 a week. Why?” The CEO then handed the guy $1,200 in cash and screamed, “Here’s four weeks’ pay, now GET OUT and don’t come back.” Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and asked, “Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-off did here?” From across the room came a voice: “Pizza delivery guy from Domino’s.”

provided by Lois Lehrman Grass and Enders Insurance. “The Art of Racing in the Rain” is the story of a philosopher dog named Enzo who teaches the reader everything they need to know about being human. Stein is the author of three other novels, “A Sudden Light,” “How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets,” and “Raven Stole the Moon.” He is the co-founder of Seattle7Writers, a nonprofit collective dedicated to energizing readers, writers, and their communities by
providing funding, programming, and donations of free books to those in need. A private reception will be held at the McCormick Riverfront Library, 101 Walnut St., Harrisburg, prior to the presentation from 6 to 7 p.m. Tickets to the private reception are required. The cost of reception tickets include hors d’oeuvres and beverages, two of the author’s books, and reserved seating at the Author Talk. Donations will be accepted at the door to support the library’s Paws 2 Read pro-
gram. Paws 2 Read provides children the opportunity to choose a book of interest and read to a registered therapy dog. The dogs offer a friendly, nonjudgmental audience for which readers can practice reading aloud and opportunities to discuss otherwise difficult topics like bullying, winning and losing, and shyness. To register for the Author Talk or to purchase tickets for the private reception, readers may visit www.dcls.org/garthstein or calling 717-234-4961, ext. 1110.

SPL’s right hand. Jesse will help in the training of the other youth leaders and will assume the SPL position in Brayden’s absence. Star Scout Mason Barrick is the new troop guide. As a former SPL, Mason has experience and knowledge that he will use as he works to help younger Scouts advance through the initial ranks. The first order of business for Brayden was to appoint patrol leaders Jason O’Donnell, Bryson Harris, and Jaime Gallick and quartermaster Joe Myers. All newly voted and appointed Scouts gathered around the American flag to take their oaths from Scoutmaster Bill Lee. Following the elections, the troop worked on Scout skills of knots and lashings in

Concert from pg 1 The husband-and-wife duo of Allan Carr and Jane Rothfield will perform roots music on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Hunter Centennial Barn, 5300 N. Front St., Harrisburg. The concert is sponsored by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS). Rothfield is an award-winning fiddler, clawhammer banjo player, and composer with deep roots in the fiddle traditions of New England, Scotland, and the American South. Rothfield and her twin brother formed thier own band in high school, playing traditional bluegrass and oldtime music. While studying in Scotland, Rothfield met Scottish singer and guitarist Carr, who had been born and raised in Aberdeen in a musical family of singers, fiddlers, pipers, and accordion players. For the more than three decades since they first met, Rothfield and Carr together have performed their blend of original Celtic and Appalachian-style music. Additional ventures have included their formation of Red Hen Stringband with banjo player David Kiphuth and his wife, singer Linda Scrade. Begun in 2004,
Red Hen played at venues and festivals throughout the East Coast and recorded two albums. In 2009, Rothfield and Carr moved to Philadelphia and formed the contra dance band Coracree with Bill Quern and Sarah Gowan. Rothfield formed the all-female old-time music group Sugar Pie in 2012 and the next year joined the female super fiddle group Panache Quartet. The quartet plays a combination of fiddling music and songs from the Cape Breton, old-time, Celtic/Contrac, and Quebecois traditions. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students ages 3 to 22. SFMS members will receive a discount. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.brownpapertickets.com or call 800838-3006. For more information, readers may visit www.sfmsfolk.org.
