Boy Scout Troop 97 and Cub Scout Pack 97 recently took part in Refuse at the Reservoir. Participants donned boots and fluorescent yellow vests to hike the trails along the Middletown Reservoir and remove trash. Scoutmaster Bill Lee had previously reviewed the seven principles of Leave No Trace (LNT) with Troop 97, and the event gave Scouts an opportunity to put a few of those points into practice. The Scout Motto is “Be Prepared,” which mirrors the first LNT principle of Plan Ahead and Prepare. The main purpose of the cleanup was to remove trash from the reservoir in accordance with the LNT principle of Dispose of Waste Properly. Cleanup participants found that most of the trash had already made it to the trash barrels along the trail. Scouts, leaders, and parents emptied these barrels, collected other garbage they could safely reach, and hauled out 18 large bags along with a few folding chairs. Scouts took time to photograph the beauty of nature, and all were careful to

Hubby Jenkins, a former New York City busker who later became a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, will present his solo act on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Hunter Centennial Barn, 5300 N. Front St., Harrisburg. The concert is sponsored by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS). He developed his musical chops and style as a busker, performing music on the sidewalks and subway platforms in New York City. An itinerant musician, he took his show on the road, playing on streets, at coffee shops, at bars, and at house parties in cities around the U.S. See Hubby Jenkins pg 3

Youth Choral Festival from pg 1
Open Stage from pg 1 The off-Broadway hit “Who’s Holiday!” is set in the land of Dr. Seuss and gives center stage to one of Seuss’ most well-known supporting characters: Cindy Lou Who, who observed the Grinch stealing her presents one Christmas. “Who’s Holiday!” is a onewoman show focused on the now grown-up Cindy Lou in her trailer, minutes before her Christmas Eve party. The show is for mature audiences only due to strong language, sexually explicit content, drug and alcohol use, and simulated smoking. Cindy Lou Who will be portrayed by Rachel Landon, who was last seen on the stage in last year’s production of “Carrie the Musical” as Margaret White. Also involved in the production are director Stuart Landon, stage manager Stacy Reck, assistant stage manager Matthew Golden, technical director Chris Gibson, lighting designer Tristan Stasiulis, costume designer Hanniel Sindelar, property designer Becky Arney and scenic decoration leader Sophie Freeman. Open Stage will present its 20th anniversary production of “A Christmas Carol” on select dates from Saturday, Nov. 23, to Sunday, Dec. 29. The production is based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale of the same name, which was first published in 1843. Dickens crafted the novella to capture the struggles he witnessed growing up in London during the Industrial Revolution when unregulated working conditions and widespread poverty left countless children on the streets.
The classic tale of morality and redemption follows the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who receives visits from three spirits on Christmas Eve. Adapted by Open Stage producing artistic director Stuart Landon and marketing director Rachel Landon and directed by Chris Gibson, Open Stage’s reimagined production brings “A Christmas Carol” into a 21st-century context. Nicholas Hughes, a board emeritus and one of Open Stage’s most established artists since its founding in 1983, will celebrate 20 years of playing characters that are perhaps some of Dickens’ most famous. Tickets for both productions are available by visiting the box office, visiting www.openstagehbg.com or calling 717232-6736. Open Stage Box Office and Subscriber Services hours are Mondays to Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. and one hour before performances. As the 30/30 Capital Campaign culminates in large-scale renovations to the theater’s physical space, the stories of this season were chosen because they reflect the same energy of change and growth. Open Stage will open the season with a new lobby, a second 50-seat stage, new seats, a renovated classroom, a library and an updated dressing room to prepare for the next 30 years of working to bring thought-provoking theater to central Pennsylvania. Future productions in this season will be “Amélie,” “Heathers the Musical,” “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Angels in America” and “James and the Giant Peach.”

Recipe of the Week Drop Fudge Ingredients 6 tablespoons cocoa 2/3 cup milk 2 cups sugar 3/4 cup chopped nuts 2 tablespoons butter Dash of vanilla Directions Add cocoa to milk. Stir well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it starts to get thick. Add sugar, cook until it will form a ball (soft) when dropped in water. Add vanilla and butter. Blend well. Add nuts. Drop by spoon onto waxed paper. Yield: three dozen pieces. Tip of the Week You already know that dryer sheets remove lint in the dryer. Well, they can do the same thing out of the dryer, too. When you’re in a fix, use a dryer sheet. It works just as well as a lint brush, and if you like the scent, it’s an added bonus. Fact of the Week “Silver Bells” was called “Tinkle Bells” until co-composer Jay Livingston’s wife told him “tinkle” had another meaning. Joke of the Week When I was a kid, my parents would always say, “Excuse my French,” just after a swear word... I’ll never forget my first day at school when my teacher asked if any of us knew any French. Thank You Thanks to my pal Francis Kasper of Middletown for the joke! That cracked me up! Food for Thought Always remember that each person you talk to could be having a much tougher day than you are. Be kind! Have a great week, everybody!

Triangle Tech, a well-known postsecondary technical school, is providing residents of Pennsylvania as well as Maryland and West Virginia with a new stateof-the-art educational facility in Chambersburg. Founded in 1944, Triangle Tech offers hands-on training and small class sizes, with classes taught by highly skilled and experienced instructors. Triangle Tech’s Chambersburg school, located in Cumberland Valley Business Park at 1669 Opportunity Ave., will offer postsecondary students the opportunity to earn an Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) degree in welding and fabrication technology in 16 months, as compared to the more traditional 24month programs. Students in the Welding and Fabrication Technology program will complete the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 Code certification exam for plate and structural welds, the A.S.M.E. 6-G certification exam for pipe fitting and piping systems and the API 1104 welding certification test for pipelines and related facilities. In addition to the new Chambersburg school, Triangle Tech has five locations in Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, Greensburg, DuBois, Sunbury, and Bethlehem. Triangle Tech is licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools under the Pennsylvania Department of
Education. Students are eligible to participate in federal and state financial aid programs, and Triangle Tech is an approved training institution for veterans and family members of the U.S. Armed Forces, active duty, reserves, and the National Guard, as well as disabled veterans. The school is accredited nationally by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. Additionally, Triangle Tech was named one of the top 30 two-year trade schools by Forbes Magazine in 2017. Other specialized associate degree programs offered at various Triangle Tech schools include CADD with Additive Manufacturing and 3-D Printing Technology; Maintenance Electricity and Construction Technology; Refrigeration, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Technology; and Carpentry and Construction Technology. The school has plans to add more programs to the Chambersburg campus in 2020. October welding classes are currently underway, with the
next class starting on Monday, Feb. 17, 2020. Prospective students are invited to visit www.triangle-tech.edu and to schedule a personal tour of the new facility on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Welding program classes are held on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. over the course of 16 months. Upon graduation, students will be qualified for entry-level and advanced-level positions as welding technicians. Triangle Tech provides continual job placement assistance through its career advising department. For more information, readers may visit www.triangle-tech.edu or call 800874-8324.

Food Bank Receives KidCents Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been awarded a $30,000 KidCents Regional Grant from The Rite Aid Foundation. Funds will be used for the organization’s youth programs across the 27-county region, including school pantries, Kids Café sites and BackPack Plus Programs. The KidCents Regional Grant Program, which provides grants of $15,000 to $30,000, funds specific out-of-school time programs focused on children’s nutrition, physical fitness and academic success. The KidCents program also annually supports a select group of more than 400 nonprofit, children-focused organizations that are committed to improving the health and well-being of children liv-
grade 12 and improve quality of life in Rite Aid communities. The grants support three of KidCents’ primary focus areas for improving the health and well-being of children: healthy eating, active living and education. To be considered, programs and projects were required to take place during out-ofschool-time, with priority given to programs that support communities in need. This is the second cycle of KidCents Regional Grants. In the first cycle, The Rite Aid Foundation awarded 180 grants, totaling more than $4 million. Another cycle of KidCents Regional Grants will launch in 2020. To learn more about the program, readers may visit www.riteaid.com/grants.
