Robert Ballard, founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust and explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society, will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 annual event hosted by The Manufacturers’ Association. The event will take place on Thursday, April 25, at The Pullo Center at Penn State York, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., York. Doors for the event will open at 4 p.m., with a general reception and networking time for the public beginning at 4:30 p.m. The program will begin at 6 p.m. with opening ceremonies and remarks. Ballard’s keynote address will be followed by a brief meet-and-greet and book-signing opportunity. Ballard discovered the RMS
Titanic in 1985 and has since succeeded in locating numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown, and John F. Kennedy’s boat, the PT-109. The author of numerous books, scientific papers, and articles, he has been featured in several television programs, including “Secrets of the Titanic” and a five-part mini-series, “Alien Deep With Bob Ballard.” He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years and continues to work with the Office of Naval Research. A pioneer in the development of deep-sea submersibles and remotely oper-
ated vehicle systems, he has taken part in more than 155 deep-sea expeditions. The association’s annual gathering traditionally brings together upwards of 800 business and community leaders for an evening of business networking, cuisine, and recognition of outstanding manufacturers from throughout the region for their contributions to business and the community during the previous year. To order tickets, readers may email the association at AnnualEvent@mascpa.org or call the office at 717-843-3891. How does the organization work to achieve its goals? York Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to provide safe, decent, affordable, healthy homes for ownership by low-income families in York County. York Habitat has built and rehabbed 133 homes to provide ownership opportunities for families in 34 years of operation. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? Nine full-time and one part-time staff members and more than 2,500 volunteers work on Habitat sites each year. This year, York Habitat has set a goal of doubling the number of contributions and doubling the amount of funds raised through Give Local York from last year’s totals. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? All of the work done by York Habitat for Humanity is considered part of our ongoing program. How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The YYSO creates a unique opportunity for elite youth musicians to learn a challenging repertoire with peers, perform in a variety of venues, and expand their perspectives of what it means to be a musician. Every year we achieve our goals by accepting over 100 musicians from grades nine to 12, representing 14 different schools and homeschooled students from York and Adams counties, to perform in three concerts per season
at various locations in York County. We offer our students the opportunity to progress in their instruments through sectionals with professional musicians, through ensemble opportunities, and by offering summer camp and college scholarships. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? The YYSO is composed of a small team of employees: the interim conductor, Brian Buterbaugh; the facility manager, John Beck; and the administrative coordinator, Roth J. Preap. All of our other volunteers are parents, students, and any persons interested in helping in the organization. D i d t h i s YY S O p a r t i c i p a t e i n t h e inaugural Give Local York last year? The YYSO did participate in the first Give Local York. The event was very well executed, and we enjoyed the immense energy created through the various nonprofits who participated. The experience was uplifting, and it is great to have the opportunity to remind everyone about the
nonprofits in York that are working to achieve greater things for the York community. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? In 2019, the YYSO will launch its 62nd season. In 2019, we are focused on expanding educational opportunities for the students. During our 2019 year, we are piloting three Music Chamber Ensembles - a string ensemble, a wind ensemble, and a brass ensemble - led by professionals musicians in our area who will work with our students to educate them on performing in a small ensemble. The students will then have a
recital on Sunday, May 5, to showcase the music that was made during this pilot. We then will hopefully launch this program as a year-round opportunity in our 2019-2020 season for the students and start booking our ensembles in local venues to gain more experience in performing. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds through Give Local York will be used for our organization’s programs/operations budget. All of our programs and operations have the students in mind to provide the best experience to our students every year.

Messiah College engineering students worked with Friends in Action Intl. to build a pedestrian bridge above a 20-foot ravine in Rama Cay, Nicaragua. The project was part of a partnership between FIA and The Collaboratory at Messiah College, which seeks to complete community transformation projects around the globe. Deep in the interior jungle regions of the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu, NiVan villagers gather their jugs to begin the more-than-one-hour hike each way to collect water. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Flemmens, Messiah College’s director of The Collaboratory, wraps up preparations for The Collaboratory’s Monday night discipleship meeting with students. Two very different worlds collide when The Collaboratory teams up with Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) to complete life-changing community transformation projects in various regions around the globe. “Our Collaboratory mission statement boils down to two things: changing the world and changing us,” shared Flemmens. “(Working with FIA), we have the opportunity to do good projects in various places around the globe. This changes our interface with our learning and the application of what we are learning. At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in various places around the world.” As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce structural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island. In June 2018, Dr. Brian Swartz’s engineering students worked with FIA to construct a pedestrian bridge above a 20-foot ravine in Rama Cay that prevented access to a proposed medical center and baseball field from the villagers’ new hurricane-resistant homes. Messiah’s Dr. Phillip Tan also visited the Rama in December 2018 to conduct microbiological and chemical analyses of water sources.
“We are pleased to host Messiah’s students with engineering projects that apply their learning to solving real-world problems and meeting tangible needs that demonstrate God’s love,” noted Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. The latest partnership of FIA and Messiah’s Collaboratory will provide clean water through 16 miles of gravity-fed piping to more than 3,500 NiVan people in Vanuatu - covering 30 villages, two clinics, and three schools. Messiah’s Dr. Thomas Soerens visited the region with FIA after learning about the need of the villagers. “I hear your organization is a friend to the people of my village,” wrote Alani, a NiVan villager. “I write to you in need. The dry season is come, and I cannot catch enough rain water to care for my family. I ask you for water. Please come soon to help my family and my people. We will not make it through the dry season without help.” The NiVan tribal leaders are already familiar with and grateful for FIA’s efforts to combine construction projects with the spread of the Gospel. The completion of a 6-kilometer road connecting 19 NiVan villages with schools and a medical clinic in 2011 resulted in faster medical transport and supply delivery, as well as more than 240 villagers coming to know Christ. Since 2017, The Collaboratory at Messiah College has partnered with FIA to secure a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond. The community is invited to join the efforts of FIA and Messiah College by providing financial support, donating construction materials, or taking part in a short-term work trip. For more information, readers may contact FIA at 717-546-0208 or fia-usa@ fiaintl.org or visit www.fiaintl.org.

Children’s Support Group Planned H.O.P.E., 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will offer Kids Under Construction (KUC), a support group for children ages 6 to 12 who have someone in their immediate family with cancer. The program is six weeks long and will meet twice a month on select Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., beginning in March. In the KUC program, emotions will be explored through art therapy. To help alleviate the stress they may be feeling, children will be encouraged to share about their feelings through art and games. KUC will also be focused on having fun and bonding with
other children who are going through similar situations while being mentored by knowledgeable adults. Children in families that are battling with cancer often have to assume responsibilities beyond their years. In addition to school, homework, and regular chores, children may be called upon to provide care to the patient and assist with younger siblings. Because of this, some meetings will be dedicated to having fun. To learn more or to register a child to participate in KUC, readers may call H.O.P.E. at 717-227-2824 or visit www.hopeforcancerfamilies.org.
