Surgenor Announces Retirement David Surgenor, who dedicated nearly 30 years to enhancing motorcyclist safety, has retired from his position as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) national director of quality and outcomes. Surgenor, who lives in York, helped shape rider training programs across the country. Surgenor became a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor for the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program in 1989. He earned his chief instructor certification in 1994 while working for Millersville University. He then joined the MSF national staff in 1999 and became the state coordinator of the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program. In 2014, Surgenor was promoted to national manager of MSF training systems. The following year, he was promoted again, this time to national director of quality and outcomes. Under Surgenor’s leadership, the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program won the national Outstanding State Program Award 13 times. In 2006, he was awarded the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Award of Excellence. Three years later, Surgenor was presented with The Chairperson’s Award by the State Motorcycle Safety Administrators Association (SMSA). The SMSA executive committee stated that besides serving as an outstanding
state coordinator for Pennsylvania, Surgenor also mentored staff in other states and in training programs across the nation, helping to develop professional workshops and learning centers. Surgenor will remain in Pennsylvania, close to family and friends. The MSF aims to promote safety through rider training and education, operator licensing tests and public information programs. The MSF works with the federal government, state agencies, the military and others to offer training for people of all skill levels so riders can enjoy a lifetime of safe, responsible motorcycling. Standards established by the MSF have been recognized worldwide since 1973. The MSF is a nonprofit organization. What is the mission of Junior Achievement of South Central PA? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Junior Achievement (JA) programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs that make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities. JA’s unique approach allows volunteers from the community to deliver our curriculum while sharing their experiences with students. Embodying

Did Junior Achievement of South Central PA participate in the inaugural Give Local York (GLY) last year? JA was proud to participate in the inaugural Give Local York event last year. It was truly exciting and humbling to be part of an event that created awareness for so many great organizations and gave local nonprofits an opportunity to raise funds through this collective movement. GLY did an awesome job of creating a vibrant environment in the spirit of giving, and we’re excited for the opportunity to be involved again this year. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently implemented Career Education and Work (CEW) Standards as part of the State Board of Education’s regulations of required education for all students in Pennsylvania. JA has been offering programs for kindergarten through 12thgraders that meet these requirements to schools in southcentral Pennsylvania at no cost, but the demand for our programs has now surpassed the financial support from the community. Our goal for 2019 is to increase our funding to match the demand for our programs. Where will the funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds raised through GLY will be used to address the increased requests for programs in our community as a result of the new CEW Standards. On average, our programs cost $20 per student.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg has formally launched its Survivor Compensation Program. The program will be administered by Commonwealth Mediation & Conciliation Inc. (CMCI). According to Bishop Ronald W. Gainer, the hope is that the program will help advance survivors on a path toward healing. The program will include settlements for abuse by diocesan priests, deacons, and seminarians, as well as priests of other dioceses and Religious Order priests who had faculties in the Diocese of Harrisburg at the time of the abuse. As part of the program, survivors will have the option of discussing the abuses with CMCI representatives. To participate in the program, claimants must have previously identified themselves to the diocese on or before Feb. 11, 2019. The claims period will run for 90 days, from Feb. 12 through Monday, May 13. Survivors who come forward after the Feb. 11, 2019, deadline will be considered for future participation in the program. Participation in the Survivor Compensation Program does not disqualify survivors from receiving additional counseling through the Victim Assistance Coordinator and Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities provides counseling services and/or reimbursement for counseling services with an approved provider for all survivors of child sexual abuse, not just clergy child sexual abuse, regardless of whether or not that abuse occurred in the Harrisburg Diocese. To participate in the Survivor Compensation Program, readers may call CMCI at 800-540-2624 or email Harrisburg@commonwealth mediation.com. Forms are available at www.common wealthmediation.com and www.youthprotectionhbg.com.

Sportsman’s 20 GAMES
More than 80 veterans of the World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Gulf War, and War on Terror eras gathered at Northeastern High School for the 14th Honor Bus trip on Nov. 17, 2018. As a token of gratitude, this trip was sponsored by the Northeastern High School Honor Bus Project. This group of students escorts local veterans on all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., to visit the various memorials dedicated to their service. In addition to visiting the memorials, participants in the recent trip visited Arlington National Cemetery to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. All
