To make it easier for customers to find products that have been grown or produced in Pennsylvania, Giant Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred shelf tags at all of its 156 stores located within Pennsylvania. PA Preferred is the official brand of food and agricultural products grown, produced, or processed in Pennsylvania. Giant has supported the program, which is designed to help the state’s
farmers and food suppliers grow their businesses, since its inception in 2004. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently joined Giant vice president and chief marketing officer Matt Simon at a press conference in Camp Hill to unveil the shelf tag program. More than 900 items, including meat, poultry, dairy, snacks, condiments, sauces,
and even pet food, are now identified by tags with the PA Preferred logo displayed at the shelf level, helping customers to identify Pennsylvania products. The PA Preferred shelf tags will be displayed in stores year-round. With the arrival of the local produce season in its stores, Giant also plans to recognize local farmers through a multifaceted marketing campaign that includes in-store signage and displays, social and digital media, TV and radio advertising, billboards, and the company’s in-store Savory magazine. From farm names to state identifier stickers and imagery showcasing the season’s harvest, the campaign aims to highlight the stories behind the farms and people responsible for bringing the products to stores. For more information, readers may visit https://giantfood stores.com/.

The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education received a donation of $5,000 from Rutter’s Farm Stores. Christopher Hartman (left), Rutter’s director of fuels and forecourt, presented the check to Horn Farm executive director Alyson Earl (center) and board treasurer Shayne Smith (right) on June 25 at the farm, 4945 Horn Road, York. Local Educators Celebrate Retirement 2014. The new school would embody their passion to educate children who learn differently from others. Through KCA, the Egers would remove many barriers to Christian education such as faith statement requirements for parents, high tuition, and rigid teaching methods. Instead, the Egers offered an affordable education with a flexible curriculum tailored to individual learning styles and a desire to provide Christian influence and teaching to children who may not have it at home. The retirement celebration also recognized KCA’s other founders: former CSY director of development Kim Martin, who retired from KCA after helping to start the school; business manager Barbara Eisenhart, who is retiring with the Egers; and former CSY teacher Jessica Potter, who was set to replace Pat Eger as head of school effective July 1. Gary Hiller, who served as master of ceremonies for the retirement celebration, will continue as director of development on the administrative team. KCA serves children from prekindergarten through grade nine within the facilities of Asbury Church at 340 E. Market St. in York’s historic district. The school is currently enrolling students for the 2019-20 school year.

Brister Promoted To Senior Director
Ice Cream Trail Expands
WellSpan Health recently promoted Kimberly Brister to the position of senior director of talent acquisition, diversity and inclusion, an expanded role that includes leadership of the regional health system’s continuing efforts to enhance diversity and create a more inclusive environment. The appointment is the latest step in WellSpan’s long-range strategy to build an engaged, diverse and inclusive workforce, according to Bob Batory, senior vice president and chief human resources officer. He noted that the decision to dedicate a leadership position to this area is consistent with WellSpan’s core values,
Pennsylvania travelers are invited to enjoy the newly expanded Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail. After a popular inaugural season, the Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail expanded from 12 creameries in eastern and southcentral Pennsylvania into three trails including a Western Pennsylvania Trail, with a total of 32 stops in these regions for 2019. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) deputy secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore recently joined local and state officials to kick off the 2019 Ice Cream Trail season at Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs. The creamery is on a historic 103-acre dairy farm that has
mission and commitment to fostering a culture where individuals feel respected, are treated fairly and have an opportunity to excel in their chosen careers. Brister, of York, previously served as director of talent acquisition for WellSpan Health. Brister has a Master of Business Administration in health care administration from the University of Phoenix. She is actively involved in numerous community organizations, including the York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program of York College of Pennsylvania; the York Jewish Community Center, where she serves on the board; the
Confronting Racism Coalition; and Big Brothers Big Sisters of York and Adams Counties, where she previously served as board president. For more information, readers may visit www.WellSpan.org.

been home to four generations of the Matthews family. It is one of 10 stops on the Eastern Pennsylvania Trail. Initiated in 2018, the trail is a partnership of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s (PDA) PA Preferred program, the DCED’s PA Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE) to highlight dairy destinations across Pennsylvania. The program includes a passport that visitors can have stamped to earn prizes at stops along each trail. More information about creameries on the trail, including a downloadable passport, can be found at www.visitPA.com/scoops. Visitors who share photos from the trail using #PursueYourScoops may be featured on visitPA’s website and social media channels. The trails officially opened statewide on June 1.
Dairy is the largest sector of Pennsylvania’s $135.7 billion agriculture industry, contributing $14.7 billion annually to the economy and supporting 52,000 jobs in the state. In 2018, PDA, PA Preferred, and CDE joined dairy farmers and industry advocates to kick off “Choose PA Dairy: Goodness That Matters,” a campaign to support Pennsylvania’s dairy industry by educating consumers on how to find and buy locally produced milk and the impact it has on Pennsylvania’s economy and the health of its residents. For travel inspiration, readers may visit www.pahappythoughts.com or www.facebook.com/visitPA. More about Pennsylvania farms and commonwealth initiatives to support dairy and other agriculture businesses is available at www.agriculture.pa.gov.
