Great Chapel Picnic Planned The Great Chapel Picnic will be held at Chapel Church, 3050 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, on Saturday, July 27, from 2 to 9 p.m. The dining hall will open at 3 p.m., with the ticket line, bazaar stand, music, outside food stands and takeout soup line set to start at 2 p.m. Musical groups to perform will be the Red Lion-Felton Band, the Chapel Collective, Set Free and White Rose Barbershop. Lawn chairs are needed. This will be a rain-or-shine event. At the ticket line for the cafeteria dining, guests will be called in groups for available seating from 3 to 7 p.m. Parking will be available in the fields to the rear of the church grove and parish hall, but handicapped-accessible or special-needs parking will be available in the main lot

behind the church building. A golf cart shuttle will be available for convenience throughout the day. For the takeout line for the soup, it is suggested that guests provide their own containers. Soup choices will be clam, ham and bean and chicken corn. Bricker’s French Fries and Carmen’s Ice Cream will be featured food stands. A bazaar stand and a silent auction will be available throughout the day. At 7 p.m., the quilts and crafts auction will take place in front of the bandstand. Activities for the youngsters will include cornhole, kickball, face painting, sand art and more. On Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, the Craley Community Fire Company, 73 New Bridgeville Road, Wrightsville, will host the annual Craley Celebration featuring a book sale, chicken barbecue and other food, children’s entertainment, and a craft and yard sale. Festivities will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 19 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 20. The public is invited to attend. Thousands of used books will be available to purchase at the book sale in the dining hall. Organizer Robert Kline said no more book donations are being accepted as space has been maxed out. However,

The opera “Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night” will be performed at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 161 N. Main St., Red Lion, on Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, at 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door only. The opera is produced and directed by college student Caroline Wolfe, who is also a member of the cast. The opera is a monodrama based on the character Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens’ novel “Great Expectations.” The opera lasts only 30 minutes and is sung entirely in English. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Dominick Argento is a native of York
County and a graduate of York High. He went on to study at the Peabody Institute and the Eastman School of Music before launching into an international music career as a composer. Argento passed away in February at age 91, leaving behind family in York. This opera is performed in memorial to Argento with permission from his family. Following each performance, there will be an informational talkback. Friday night’s discussion, “Welcome to Satis House,” focuses on Dickens and “Great Expectations.” Saturday’s “Claim to Fame” will provide more information about Argento.
