Local first responders Derek Eveler, Wayne Bush, and Dennis Wilt received Commendation Awards from the Emergency Health Services Federation on Aug. 3 at Red Lion Area Ambulance Association (RLAAA). They were recognized for their role in saving a life. On June 8, Red Lion Area Ambulance EMTs Eveler and Bush, along with Medic 102-6 - UPMC Pinnacle LifeTeam paramedic Wilt responded to a call for a cardiac arrest in Windsor Township. The patient’s neighbor had witnessed the patient collapse in the front yard and immediately called 911 and began CPR, continuing until the police arrived and took over CPR. The first responders arrived to find police and fire departments on the scene and CPR in progress. A York Regional Police Department officer reported that one shock had been delivered using an automated external defibrillator (AED). The EMS team continued patient care with manual CPR, followed by placement of the LUCAS, an automatic mechanical CPR device. Two more shocks were delivered with the AED. A pulse was re-established and the patient began to regain consciousness. Today, the patient is doing well and is enjoying life with his family. At the recognition ceremony, C. Steven Lyle, executive director of the Emergency Health Services Federation, presented the awards to Eveler, Bush and Wilt. Recognition commendations were also presented to the police officers, the firefighter and the patient’s neighbor for their actions. Attending the ceremony were the patient, Bradley Blouse, and his family; the neighbor who had called 911 and performed CPR; firefighter Barry Barshinger

Dallastown Area Intermediate School Bible Adventure (formerly called Released Time) has announced that this year’s class will began on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Bible Adventure is a legal, state-approved program operated by Joy El Ministries, a Pennsylvania nonprofit organization. During the program, public school children may leave their classrooms for one hour each week to receive biblical teaching. Bible Adventure is designed to provide moral and character development in a Christian context. Mount Pisgah Trinity United Methodist Church (UMC), 5615 Mount Pisgah Road, York, invites the community to an Appalachian Craft Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15. Admission is free, and the event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the items that will be for sale are created by residents who live in the rural areas surrounding the Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Ky. Organizer Sandy Eckard explained that Red Bird Mission purchases crafts from artists and craftspeople and markets them locally and at events throughout the country in order to create economic opportunities for the residents. More than 80 crafters will contribute items to the craft fair, Eckard said. A wide variety of handmade crafts will be available for purchase, including jewelry, pottery, wreaths, wooden furniture and utensils, coal carvings, jams and jellies, musical instruments, woven rugs, Christmas ornaments and Nativity sets, brooms, handpainted gourds, corn shuck flowers and dolls, and baskets made of native creek willow and honeysuckle. Wooden pull toys, soft dolls, books, and other toys will also be part of the selection. Mount Pisgah Trinity UMC hosted a Red Bird Mission Appalachian Craft Fair for the first time in 2016 and received so much positive feedback that members decided to do it again. Mount Pisgah Trinity UMC pastor Keith Schmuck has participated in work camps at Red Bird Mission on five occasions over
the past several years. Schmuck is drawn to caring for the Appalachian people. “It’s a different culture in our country that has been forgotten by most of the world,” said Schmuck, adding that the folks who live around Red Bird Mission must travel nearly an hour to reach civilization and that job opportunities are slim. According to Schmuck, Red Bird Mission began in the early 1900s to provide education and Christian evangelism ministries to area residents. Today the mission offers medical assistance, dental help, job training, and a school for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, in addition to facilitating work camps with volunteers year-round. “Every kind of service you think you could use, Red Bird provides,” remarked Schmuck. Class Of 1959 Will Gather The Red Lion High School Class of 1959 will hold its monthly luncheon on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Meadow Hill Family Restaurant in Longstown.
