GTGC Installs Blue Star Marker The Green Thumb Garden Club (GTGC) installed a Blue Star Memorial Highway marker at the Keystone Welcome Center on I-83 North, mile marker 2.5, Shrewsbury, on Sept. 19. GTGC member Iona Bradley had the idea to sponsor the marker four years ago, and she enlisted GTGC members’ support for the project. The marker is a tribute to all members of the U.S. armed forces. Placement was made in cooperation with PennDOT, District 8, York County, and the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. The Blue Star Memorial Marker program of the National Garden Clubs Inc. began in 1945 to honor the men and women serving in the armed forces during World War II. The blue star was chosen as the symbol for the program because of the star on flags displayed in See Marker pg 4

from farmland (EC-1); grading, shaping, re-leveling or similar measures (EC-2); restoring permanent fences (EC-3); and restoring conservation structures (EC-4). ECP is administered by FSA to assist producers with the cost of recovery activities required to restore the agricultural land to pre-disaster conditions. Producers who sustained damage from this disaster event are encouraged to submit their request for assistance prior to beginning reconstructive work. Submitting a request after completing qualified reconstructive work may result in forfeiture of program eligibility. FSA county committees will complete an evaluation of submitted requests and obligate available funds based on an onsite inspection of the damaged land, taking into consideration the type and extent of the eligible damage. Completion of the on-site inspection does not guarantee that cost-share funding will be allocated. The use of obligated funds is limited to return the land to the relative pre-disaster condition. Conservation concerns that were present on the land prior to the disaster are not eligible for ECP assistance. Approved ECP applicants may receive up to 75 percent of the cost of completing the approved restoration activity. For more information on ECP, readers may contact the York County FSA office at 717-755-2966, ext. 2.
