Road to Bethlehem, an outdoor Nativity featuring actors, live animals, music, and 11 scenes leading up to and including the birth of Jesus Christ, will take place on Dec. 8 at Susquehanna Grace Community Church in Wrightsville. The event is free and open to people of all ages.
For more than 30 years, Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC) has been hosting Road to Bethlehem, a live Nativity, for the public each Christmas season. “It started with a group of young families of the church wanting to provide a Christmas event for their children that wasn’t about the commercialized traditions that have become today’s understanding of Christmas,” explained organizer Rebecca Smith. “It was a simple idea to make Christmas about Christ for the children and adults alike.” Road to Bethlehem will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at SGCC, 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville. The event is free and open to people of all ages. Attendees are welcome to bring nonperishable food items or monetary donations for Hearts for Hunger, a food pantry located within Pleasant View Church in Red Lion. A cast of more than 75 people will perform in the show. “The Hip Nut,” a multicultural adaptation of “The Nutcracker,” takes place in two acts and tells the story of a Christmas Eve in modern-day scenes. Clara, the featured girl, is later approached by a group of gangsters and the Nutcracker comes to chase the gangsters away. After arriving home, she dreams about the Nutcracker again while she enjoys a World Holiday Festival and meets many multicultural friends. Students of Greater York Dance and trained and untrained dancers from the greater York community complete the cast. Also represented are the William Penn Performing Arts Institute, First Capital Drumline, and other groups.

Musical performances will presented by the Susquehanna Travellers, Julie Stone with students from Bella Voce Studio, and harpist Emily Marini. Each year, attendees comment on how much they enjoy the break and moments to pause that this annual event provides amidst the busyness of the holiday season, Smith said. “This is an event that stops you and says simply, ‘Breathe and enjoy this season of goodwill.’ It is a good reminder to … relish in what Christmas See Road To Bethlehem pg 7

Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the
friendship with Bell. The clock has an inscription that says, “For offering support and empowerment to York County residents living with disabilities, 1982 to 2018.” Diane and John Schlaline, owners of Schlaline Print Shop in East Berlin, received the Business of the Year Award. The company was recognized as a business that contributes time and resources to assist Bell in fulfilling its mission within the community. The Schlaline Print Shop is a family business that has created space for individuals in Bell’s Adult Training Facility (ATF) in New Oxford to volunteer. According to Bell, the individuals, all of whom live with varying degrees of intellectual disabilities, have built great relationships with the Schlalines because they are welcomed with genuine respect. Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a human services agency based in York. It provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and families that are homeless. Since 1966, Bell programs have been seeking to provide an environment of support and empowerment to help people throughout the greater York and Hanover area improve their quality of living.

Recovery Home Planned For Veterans The York County Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Bell Socialization Services Inc. have teamed up to create The Higher Standard Project, a privately funded recovery home for veterans undergoing treatment for substance abuse or trauma. The Higher Standard will be home for up to six veterans capable of self-support while undergoing treatment in York County Veterans Wellness Court or veterans released from York County Prison by way of long-term, inpatient treatment at a VA Medical Center. Priority will be given to combat veterans. The home’s aim will be to provide veterans the opportunity to recover together in a residence that promotes wellness and the values of military service. Following accreditation, the project will expand into other communities to meet the needs of veterans throughout York County. The project advisory board was formed in August to oversee the project. The board consists of Veterans Wellness Court mentors, alumni, and adult probation staff, along with representatives of the federal VA judicial outreach program, Bell Socialization, York County Veterans Outreach, and York County Veterans Affairs.
