New Freedom VFW Holds Christmas Party YMCA LIVESTRONG Program Offers Support To The New Freedom Veterans of Foreign Wars Cancer Survivors (VFW) Post 7012 hosted its annual Christmas party for children in the community on Dec. 14. Santa handed out gifts and candy canes. The event included a magic show, face painting, balloons, crafts, games, prizes and refreshments. Children also visited with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The YMCA of York and York County is offering the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, an evidence-based program that is intended to help cancer survivors and patients regain their physical and mental strength. The free 12-week program supports cancer survivors in regaining their physical, emotional and spiritual strength. Currently, this program is offered at the Bob Hoffman Dover Branch, Eastern Branch, Southern Branch, and York Branch locations. The health and wellness exercise program is conducted in a small group environment that includes individualized attention for each participant. Adult survivors are eligible to join the program during all stages of recovery. The program also serves and embraces the families and caregivers who have been affected by the disease through a free family membership throughout the course of the program. Centre and Stewartstown Presbyterian churches, Cross Roads United Methodist Church, and St. John Sadler’s Lutheran Church sponsored teams for the walk. One-fourth of the collected funds - approximately $1,187 - will support the food pantry of Mason-Dixon Community Services (MDCS) in Delta. In addition, participants packed 200 snack kits for MDCS, which has the goal to prevent homelessness. Each dollar families save by securing food or energy assistance through MDCS frees up money to pay utilities and rent or mortgage payments so that families can stay in their homes or apartments. MDCS believes that helping families avoid homelessness contributes to building stability in the community and improving educational and other opportunities for children. The Cross Roads Ministerium, which includes Cross Roads United Methodist and Hopewell and Round Hill Presbyterian churches, sponsored the walk, and the Eureka Fire Police of Stewartstown helped to provide safe walking conditions.

Red Lion Area Band Parents Club will host a designer purse bingo fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Student Commons at Red Lion Area Senior High School, 200 Horace Mann Ave., Red Lion. The cost of admission will include 20 bingo games. Specialty games, baked goods and other food items, and more will also be available. The community is invited to attend. All attendees must have a ticket. Attendees under age 18 may participate only when accompanied by a supervising adult.

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will host upcoming activities. Individuals must be members of the center to participate in the center’s activities. To become a member, interested readers may stop by the center and sign up, and they should bring a driver’s license or other photo ID card. For more information about the center and its programs, readers may call 717-235-6060. The center serves a hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. each day, and attendees are encouraged to arrive at 11:20 a.m. The senior center is selling cookbooks featuring recipes from members of the center. The sale is a fundraiser for the center. The center offers tai chi at 10:15 a.m. each day. Daily isometric exercises begin at 9:15 a.m. Stretch yoga is offered at 9 a.m. on Mondays, and line dancing is held at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Members may also use the exercise equipment or walk in the gym every morning. A balance and core class takes place on Tuesdays at 9 a.m., and a balance with weights class will be held on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. A beginner balance and core class is held on Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. The center also offers a more advanced weights/balance class on Fridays. The center is considering restarting its HOOP-Fit class, which was held at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesdays. Anyone who is interested in participating may contact the senior center. The salsa dance class has been canceled due to lack of
participation. The center also offers an acrylic art class on Mondays at 9:30 a.m., a watercolor art class on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m., ceramics on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m., Walking Through the Bible on Thursdays at 8:45 a.m., and the Friends Together Craft Class on Fridays at 9 a.m. The center also offers a class on card making every other Monday after lunch. The blanket knotting service project is available on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. A group for quilters meets every other Wednesday to work on lap robes for veterans and other projects. The center offers a movie and popcorn once a month. A podiatrist visits every nine weeks, and a nurse stops by once a month to conduct blood pressure checks. A jewelry making class is also planned. A group from the center is knitting hats for Coats of Friendship, an organization that provides hats and gently used coats to homeless people in the area. Center members may play Bunco on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., and the center aims to have 12 players each week. For center members who live in the New Freedom, Shrewsbury, and Glen Rock areas and who no longer drive or who do not have transportation, the center can arrange for transportation to and from the center via rabbittransit. The service is available free for anyone age 65 and over. The senior center also seeks Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers. Helpers volunteer one morning every four weeks. Southern York County School District recently announced the elementary school academic excellence lists for the first marking period of the 2019-20 school year. The Dallastown Area High School Class of 1956 held its 63-year reunion on Oct. 12 at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House on White Street in York. Senior Center Posts Schedule Stewartstown Senior Center, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, will offer a variety of programs and activities to local seniors, including the serving of lunch daily. The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) presented its Bea Blatner Volunteer of the Year Award to Annette Roderick in recognition of her years of service. Roderick joined York County Literacy Council in 2012. Since then, Roderick has volunteered more than 2,415 hours. She has tutored 21 students, four of whom received their high school equivalency diploma. Roderick served as a classroom aide for YCLC’s math classes and volunteered for its Buck A Book and bingo events.
The Bea Blatner Volunteer of the Year Award was established in 2002 in memory of longtime YCLC volunteer Bea Blatner, who supported YCLC’s mission by serving as a tutor, committee member, library volunteer, donor, and board member. For near 20 years, Blatner gave her time, enthusiasm, and expertise, continuing to tutor when she was in her 90s. Ballroom Dance Classes Church Will Host Singers St. John’s Blymire’s United Equine Meadows condominium Slated Church of Christ, 1009 Blymire complex in Red Lion. Directed by Ballroom dance classes will again be offered in the social hall at St. James Lutheran Church, 2335 Cramer Road, Brogue. Classes will start on Saturday, Jan. 11, and continue for 10 weeks. The beginners’ class will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by the intermediate/advanced class from

Road, Dallastown, will host the Equine Meadows Singers as they present their Christmas concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, in the sanctuary. The concert will be free, but a freewill offering will be received. The Equine Meadows Singers consist of 35 people from the
