children before the children start kindergarten. Families read at their own pace, and the 1,000-book goal can be reached done in as little as one year if families read three books per day. The York County Libraries program is an offshoot of a national initiative. Children from the day they are born to the day they start kindergarten can participate. There is no cost, and all that is needed to participate is a free York County Libraries card. Registration is ongoing at local libraries, and families receive a passport to help track progress at each 100-book milestone. When participants reach 500 and 1,000 books, they are awarded special reading incentives at their library. According to Gilbert, staff members countywide can provide parents with book recommendations and tips for engaging children in reading. They also offer a variety of free educational programs and story times year-round. York County Libraries launched the program in 2018 and held its first graduation ceremony for 68 children in August 2019. In total, this group read 72,443 books.
