WellSpan, Letterkenny Partner On The Front Lines Of COVID-19 As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. These efforts included forming a special partnership with Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg. On May 1, Letterkenny started production of 70,000 protective gowns for WellSpan Health to help bolster the local health care system’s supply chain as it continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Letterkenny produced prototypes for cloth face masks for WellSpan Health, which has shared the designs with other community partners. Letterkenny Army Depot has been supporting frontline U.S. military efforts since the 1940s and stepped up to join a much different fight to protect people. In February, prior to its first patient testing positive for COVID-19, WellSpan Health was reacting to supply chain demand as production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in China was diminished due to the country’s battle with the pandemic, and PPE was redirected to U.S. cities already experiencing COVID-19. Meanwhile, John Massimilla, chief operating officer and vice president of administration for WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s 20,000 employees. Massimilla shared the information about Letterkenny’s efforts with WellSpan Health’s performance improvement team, comprising hospital officials and engineers. According to Keith Noll, senior vice president - chief administrative officer for WellSpan Health, the team
Shawn Hind, Letterkenny Army Depot (center), discusses isolation gown materials with (from left) WellSpan Health performance improvement team members James Eichelberger and Srinath Asuri and Letterkenny’s Logan Robinson at the Army depot’s upholstery shop on April 22. would later be nicknamed the “MacGyver team” after the star of the television series who uses unconventional problem-solving skills to save lives. The team, led by Debra Ruckert, senior director of performance improvement at WellSpan Health, utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products. As discussions moved forward and the partnership took shape, Letterkenny shared its mask design for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple sheets of plastic, garbage bags and a rain poncho were used in figuring out a prototype that would allow WellSpan Health to eventually mesh a material design to create isolation gowns. Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to
make 70,000 protective gowns, Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny expected production to take six to eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site. Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward. For more information about WellSpan Health, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

Recognizing the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on seniors’ final years on the diamond, the York Revolution has announced that it is inviting area high school senior baseball and softball players to play in the Class of 2020 Baseball and Softball Invitationals at PeoplesBank Park this summer. While dates will depend on the easing of restrictions on organized sports and other regulations, team officials reported that the invitationals will take place on separate days at the ballpark for Class of 2020 baseball and softball players, respectively. The Revolution has created an online preregistration form to gauge the interest of seniors and will use their responses to craft the pick-up style series of games for baseball and for softball. The link to the sign-up form is available at www.yorkrevolution.com/team /news-archive/?article_id=950. York Revolution president
Eric Menzer said the team is considering dates in mid-July to late July for the games and will further shape the events based on the feedback of area seniors. The current concept is to form teams joining seniors from all the YAIAA high schools under the leadership of
a group of high school coaches. Mentzer stressed that the events will be kept as flexible as possible to ensure the safety of all participants. The Revolution will announce additional details regarding the invitationals as they become confirmed.

Bailey Coach Disinfects First Responder Vehicles
Wyndridge Farm, 885 S. Pleasant Ave., Dallastown, saw an opportunity to help benefit United Way of York County’s COVID19 Response Fund with a fundraiser called Cases for a Cause. Cases for a Cause started on April 8 and was scheduled to last three days. The team at Wyndridge Farm was prepped and ready to go with a drivethrough case pickup that offered select craft beers produced by Wyndridge Farm. All monies raised at the fundraiser were slated to go to the COVID19 Response Fund. Before 1 p.m. on April 8,
Wyndridge Farm had its first guest. One after another, cars continued to roll in. By the end of the first day, 75% of Wyndridge Farm’s select inventory was sold. There were only 67 cases left at the end of the day, which were sold the following day. With only a week to promote Cases for a Cause, organizers at Wyndridge Farm were pleased by the turnout and the success of the fundraiser. In two days, with over 100 donations, Cases for a Cause raised $6,500 for the United Way of York County’s COVID19 Response Fund. Wyndridge Farm thanked the community for supporting the cause.

SPCA Updates Clinic Schedule The York County SPCA reopened its spay/neuter clinic with modified safety protocols on May 26. The organization was required to close the high-volume clinic in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from both the CDC and state and national veterinary medical organizations at that time dictated that elective spay/neuter surgeries must be temporarily suspended, both to conserve personal protective equipment and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During the closure, caretakers were unable to have free-roaming cats spayed or neutered. The Pennsylvania Veterinary
Medical Association has since revised its statement, now allowing veterinarians to use their professional judgement to resume these elective procedures, while still adhering to state policies and recommendations regarding social distancing. York County SPCA’s decision to reopen its spay/neuter clinic was made after careful consideration by the organization’s leadership team and by consulting recommendations from the CDC, the AVMA, and shelter medicine experts. In order to safely resume services, several modifications to scheduling, intake, and discharge procedures have been made. Trap-Neuter-Return

Due to the backlog of spay/neuter appointments, new patients will be seen beginning in August. New appointments can be made by visiting www.ycspca.org. The SPCA anticipates that the coronavirus will continue to delay scheduling for the remainder of 2020.

Wagman To Construct New Addition At Ballpark will feature a wood-like deck with beverage rails. This marks the third project on which Wagman has partnered with the York Revolution. Wagman completed the preconstruction and construction for the stadium when it opened in 2007. In 2019, Wagman completed extensive renovations to the skybox level, including the new 1741 Club Presented by UPMC, designed by Murphy and Dittenhafer Architects. Construction began on the
White Claw Terrace Courtesy of Ace Distributing shortly before Gov. Tom Wolf suspended nonessential business operations due to COVID-19. Construction will resume when permitted. Scouts Caden McKinney and Elijah Motter of Troop 25 in east York were elevated to the rank of Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor on Feb. 25. The Scouts received their awards from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino. For his Eagle Scout Project, Elijah, son of Leo Motter and Tina Kent, designed and installed a prayer wall for his youth group at St. Joseph Church. The project involved turning one entire wall into a white board so members of the youth group could write prayer requests and other messages of support. He also supervised fellow Scouts and adults in repairing book shelves and making other improvements to the youth room. Having started out as a Tiger Cub, Elijah has been a Scout for 11 years and has earned 24 merit badges. Elijah is also a member of the Boy Scouts of America’s Order of the Arrow. Elijah is a junior at Central York High School and plans to attend college to study electrical engineering. For his Eagle Scout Project, Caden, son of Mark and Michele McKinney, converted an observation deck into an outdoor classroom at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. This project involved removing the banisters; power washing the deck, although there was not easy access to water and electricity; and then re-staining the deck. Three sets of benches were added along with a metal roof that was extended to cover everything. The project took a total of 109 hours to complete for Caden and his adult and Scout helpers. Having started out as a Tiger Cub, Caden has been a Scout for 12 years and has earned 26 merit badges. Caden is a senior at Central York High School. He is undecided about college but would like to eventually major in environmental science. Both Scouts thanked their parents, their Scoutmaster, and fellow Scouts, friends and family members for their help in com-
pleting their projects and their Eagle requirements. State Rep. Keith Gillespie attended the Court of Honor and presented the Scouts with a House Citation and a personal letter, and representatives of the Marine Corps League and the Sons of the American Revolution also attended and presented the Scouts with Certificates of Recognition. The new Eagle Scouts also received Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition from Rep. Scott Perry and American flags that had flown over the United States Capitol in recognition of their achievements. CWO John Crone from the First Capitol Detachment of the Marine Corps League was on

Organizations Receive Funding The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently awarded a $250,000 grant to the Manufacturers’ Association of Emigsville to establish a unique apprenticeship ecosystem that will support manufacturers in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties. The purpose of this forwardleaning project is to establish a registered apprenticeship ecosystem in southcentral Pennsylvania by expanding employer program participation, increasing the number of journey workers, and adding apprentices and pre-apprentices. The association has also been able to increase the number of trades included, such as toolmakers, machinists, maintenance mechanics, mechatronics technicians, quality technicians, and industrial manufacturing technicians, and it recently submitted paperwork to the state to add a registered automation robotics technician. Secondary objectives of the new program include increasing participation of nontraditional populations, which are typically under-
served by trades training, and more efficiently aligning available resources to better support economic growth throughout the region. The program has expanded in recent years by creating a mentor training program, adding college credit and establishing a high school pre-apprenticeship program to prepare the future skilled workforce. The association currently has more than 80 apprentices from more than 30 companies in its multi-year apprentice training program, which aims to help regional manufacturers create a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet their needs moving into the future. The southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing sector was recently awarded a second round of funding to further support the Next Generation Manufacturing Industry Partnership. The commonwealth’s PAsmart Next Gen grants provide funds to support the development, launch, implementation, and technical assistance of Next Gen
Industry Partnerships (IP), which address the workforce, economic development, and educational needs of regional industries through an employer-led and demand-driven approach. Over the past year, the Southcentral Pennsylvania Manufacturing Next Gen Industry Partnership of regional manufacturing leaders created action teams that focused on the most urgent needs identified by the industry. Those include promoting manufacturing careers to grow the future workforce, improving training opportunities for middle-skill and technical occupations, and facilitating businessto-business connections to exchange best practices. The partnership is facilitated by The Manufacturers’ Association which works with regional organizations to support the employers’ initiatives, which include SCPa Works, the regional workforce development board; the Southcentral Pennsylvania Partnership for Regional Economic Performance; and the educational partners in southcentral

Lancaster Chef Garners Gold With Regional Team By Ann Mead Ash
Susan Notter of Lancaster, a pastry chef, is one of eight professionals, all from the East Coast of the United States, who participated as a regional team in the Culinary Olympics held in Stuttgart, Germany, from Feb. 14 to 19. The event is an international culinary competition held every four years. The Olympics drew 1,800 chefs from nearly 70 countries. The group with which Notter participated won a gold medal for its display program and placed third overall in the regional team category, taking home a bronze medal. Notter, who has made her home in Lancaster for a decade, has been participating in culinary competitions since 1979. Along the way, she has placed first in prestigious competitions such as the Southern Pastry Classic in Atlanta in 2003. More recently, she earned gold as a member of a U.S. team that competed in the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in 2016. Growing up in Cheshire, England, Notter often created sweet treats for her three younger sisters. “My parents didn’t buy boxed cookies and cakes,” recalled Notter. “When we wanted something sweet to eat, I had to make it.” Notter soon discovered that she enjoyed baking
cakes and organizing birthday parties. Following high school, she worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to make decorative items, layered cakes, and tortes. At the same time, she learned to speak German. “People were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful experience,” said Notter. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work visa. In 1983, she transferred to Zurich, where she began taking evening classes to learn to work with sugar. The teacher saw that she had talent, and she became his assistant. “We taught people to work with sugar in a way that was very learnable,” said Notter. The pair began competing and teaching in other countries, eventually relocating to the U.S. in 1992. After working for Albert Uster Imports as corporate pastry chef, Notter took a job in Baltimore and found a house just over the Pennsylvania border in New Freedom around 2008. She worked in a variety of positions, including as director of the pastry arts program for YTI Lancaster. She is

now employed as a distribution partner with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a five-course menu, four different finger foods, three appetizer plates, four plated desserts, and four petit fours. Notter was responsible for the desserts and the petit fours. Notter noted that the competition was steep. “The national teams from Norway, Sweden, and Finland really dominated,” said Notter, who lauded the team from Switzerland as well. “They’re very innovative.” Notter said that in addition to the competitions, she especially enjoys working for Max Felchlin AG, which is a family business that has been producing chocolate for more than 100 years. “We do classes and training for customers and tours of Switzerland,” said Notter, who added that her ability to speak German and her experience with the culture is helpful. “I love being out in the industry, and I am working with some of the best products in the world.” More information about the Culinary Olympics may be found at www.olympiade-der -koeche.com/en.

Since March, the CPFB has distributed about 12 million pounds of food to hundreds of partner agencies in 27 counties. The CPFB is like a wholesale distributor of charitable food. Its work provides a network of nearly 1,000 food pantries, soup kitchens, churches, and community organizations with what they need to feed their communities. Since mid-March, volunteers have given thousands of hours to
pack 120,000 crisis response boxes. In April, CPFB served nearly 175,000 people across 27 counties and distributed more than 44% more food than it did during April 2019. Agency partners are settling into the new system of food distribution. CPFB reported that these partners have become creative and efficient in getting food to families in need, while practicing social distancing.
Allman-Haugh Jodi and Frank Moritz of Red Lion and Brian Allman of Windsor have announced the engagement of their daughter, Danielle Allman, to Cameron Haugh. The bride-elect graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 2013 and YTI Career Institute’s medical billing and coding program in 2017. Mr. Haugh is the son of Melissa and John Young of Dallastown and Robert Haugh of Brogue. He graduated from Dallastown Area Senior High School in 2013. An October wedding is planned.
Keeping up with the increase in demand while navigating the disruptions in the food supply chain has been the greatest challenge. However, with any challenge, there is an opportunity for innovation. In early May, the CPFB began distributing meals from Operation BBQ Relief. This endeavor turns donated food that comes in restaurant-size packaging into familyfriendly frozen meals for charitable distribution. Each frozen container has a complete ready-to-eat meal, including healthy protein, vegetables, and another side dish for a family of four. The meals go easily from the freezer to the oven to the dinner table. The CPFB has a long-standing partnership with the agriculture community. The CPFB has signed on to a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program to rescue arrange for people in need to receive food that would otherwise be dumped or turned over in the field. Through the USDA’s Farmers to Families program, the CPFB will work with several local farmers including Lancaster Farm Fresh, a co-op of local farmers in and around Lancaster County, and Brian Campbell Farms in Bloomsburg to get fresh fruits, vegetables, pork, chicken, dairy products, and eggs to the people CPFB serves. The USDA buys the
food from farms and pays a distributor to put it together into neatly packaged boxes to be delivered to CPFB’s partner agencies for distribution. Pennsylvania was awarded $255,373, from the USDA’s Farm to Food Bank Program. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will distribute to the CPFB to reimburse farmers for costs associated with harvesting, packing, processing, and distributing donated agricultural surplus. The funding will pay for 200,000 pounds of cheese that will be distributed to food banks statewide. The Farm to Food Bank Program was created in the 2018 federal Farm Bill and was modeled after the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS). Pennsylvania’s funds are equitably distributed through the CPFB and its 13 subcontractors to procure surplus agricultural products from Pennsylvania farmers and food processors. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s $1.5 million Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System serves as a match for the federal Farm to Food Bank Program. All customers who renew their driver’s license or photo ID card online or through the mail will receive a new product using the most recent photo of that individual that exists in PennDOT’s system. No camera cards will be issued to these customers, and they will receive their new product by mail within 15 days. The renewal process is complete when the final product is received. Both non-commercial and commercial drivers may renew their products through the mail. Individuals who renewed their product on or before May 10 will receive a camera card in the mail and will need to visit a PennDOT Photo License Center to obtain an updated photo. Additionally, nonU.S. citizens must also visit a driver’s license center in person to complete a transaction. For a list of reopened locations, readers may visit www.dmv.pa.gov. Expiration dates on driver’s licenses, photo ID cards, learner’s permits and camera cards scheduled to expire from March 16 through Sunday, May 31, have been extended until Tuesday, June 30.
