As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The

The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their all-youcan-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. More than two dozen WWII re-enactors in authentic uniforms representing both the Allies and Axis countries are expected to

be present to interact with visitors. This includes a German unit, a large Russian contingent with machine guns and ordinance displays, and the Big Red One Living History Organization - representing the U.S. 1st Infantry Division. The museum grounds will be filled with period tents, equipment, supplies, armaments, Jeeps, and possibly an M20 armored personnel carrier. New this year, a few WWII veterans will share their experiences.

Visitors will also see how the railroad supported the war effort and was affected by it. Due to gasoline rationing during the war, the Ma and Pa saw passenger traffic more than quadruple from 1940 to 1943. Also, 45-minute motorcar train rides and tours of the village will be offered during the encampment. Additional information on special events and full schedules is available at www.MaAndPa Railroad.com.

The Stewartstown Railroad, 21 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Stewartstown, will run a New Freedom Special, a train ride from Stewartstown to New Freedom and back, on Saturday, Aug. 24. The ride will begin at the Stewartstown Station at 10 a.m. The train will stop briefly at the railroad’s Hungerford Station, located on South Main Street in Shrewsbury, before proceeding the rest of the 7.4 miles to New Freedom. The ride will take approximately an hour. Once in New Freedom, passengers will have an opportunity to walk around, sightsee, or grab a snack as the train waits for approximately an hour before returning to Stewartstown, where it will arrive at approximately 1 p.m. The New Freedom Special is timed so attendees may see Steam Into History’s steam locomotive depart. The New Freedom Special consists of small trains called motorcars, or speeders. These are small motorized vehicles, designed to carry two to eight track workers and their tools out on the tracks to make repairs and inspect the line. The Stewartstown Railroad has a collection of these motorcars, and they are coupled together and used for the rides. Motorcars were built by a number of manufacturers for a period of approximately 100 years, between the 1890s and the 1990s. Prior to this period, track workers had to use handcars, pumping the handles up and down until they got to their destination. By the time they arrived, the workers were often worn out. Motorized cars helped to alleviate this problem. In the late 1980s, railroads began adding hi-rail gear to pickup trucks. The hi-rail equipment was a set of railroad wheels that could be lowered onto the rails so a pickup could be driven down the line. Motorcars are still used by some railroads, such as the Stewartstown Railroad, for both work crews and passenger excursions. The Stewartstown Railroad is celebrating its 135th birthday, having been chartered in 1884. The line was started by a number of local merchants who wanted to get

Giant Food Stores has announced the launch of a new private brand product line for children. Nature’s Promise Kids is an extension of the current Nature’s Promise line of “free-from” products, which includes many organic options. Select items are already in stores, with more launching over the next year at all 181 Giant, Martin’s Food Markets and Giant Heirloom Market stores. The new line builds on Nature’s Promise, a line of plant-based food products that contain only nonGMO ingredients, and many items are certified organic. The Nature’s Promise Kids line, designed for children age 4 and up, features products designed to be nutritionally equivalent or better than similar traditional products. Nature’s Promise Kids products do not include any synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, sweeteners, MSG or highfructose corn syrup. In addition, Nature’s Promise Kids products contain no more than 500 mg of added sodium per serving; no more than 40% of calories from added sugar; no more than 10% of calories from saturated fat, except for nut, meat, poultry and dairy products; and one or more vitamins and/or minerals at 10% daily value or higher, if relevant to product category. The first two items to hit store shelves are Nature’s Promise Kids Sparkling Seltzer Water and Nature’s Promise Kids Squeezable Fruit Pouches. Giant will introduce additional Nature’s Promise Kids products, including apple slices, fruit snacks, cereal and more, over the next several months. Giant has committed to removing all synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, sweeteners, MSG and high-fructose corn syrup from all private brand products by 2025.
