VFW To Host “Santa Drive Thru” Event BY FRANCINE FULTON
New Freedom VFW Post 7012 will host a “Santa Drive Thru” event for the community on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the VFW parking lot at 123 W. Main St., New Freedom. Families will be able to wave to Santa as they drive by, and Santa will greet visitors from a safe distance. The drive-through event replaces the VFW’s annual Children’s Christmas Party, which had to be modified because of COVID-19. “Normally, we hold a big party, and we have games and food, Santa and elves and magicians,” said VFW auxiliary member and patriotic instructor Janet Locher, event organizer. She noted that the party has been offered annually for more than 20 years. “It has (grown) over the last five years with face painting and a balloon artist. (The ‘Santa Drive Thru’) is a safer thing to do and will still give children the pleasure of seeing Santa.” Also at the event, children will be able to drop off letters to Santa, and all children will receive a goodie bag. “(The goodie bags) will have small toys and candy and a coloring book and some crayons,” Locher noted. Elves will direct traffic at the event. Drivers should proceed west on Main Street, pass the VFW Post on the right, turn right on North Third Street and then take a right onto Tank Alley.
John Brengle (left), a Vietnam veteran and a member of New Freedom VFW Post 7012, portrayed Santa, and Betty Fuhr, a VFW Post 7012 Auxiliary member, portrayed Mrs. Claus during the post’s 2019 Children’s Christmas Party. This year, the post will hold a “Santa Drive Thru” on Dec. 12.
A route map is available at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / V F W Post7012. The event is free, and no registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item for the Southern York County Food Pantry. The Christmas event is one of several VFW-sponsored activities held throughout the year. “Our post has always been very community and family-oriented,” Locher said, noting that the VFW sponsors an Easter egg hunt, collects items for local food pantries and participates in Wreaths Across America. “ We are sponsoring (Wreaths Across America on Saturday, Dec. 19) and organizing wreaths for five cemeteries in the area,” she noted. “One (cemetery)
has Revolutionary War veterans.” VFW Post 7012 is a private club for former members of the armed forces and those on active duty. “We do have a lot of young veterans that are members; it’s a growing organization,” Locher said. “We have a lot of veterans coming home, and having a place where they can talk things over (with other members) is very helpful for them.” The VFW canteen is located upstairs at the VFW Hall. Because of the pandemic, the dining room is open with a limited menu on Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 3 to 9 p.m. For more information, readers may call 717968-8505 or visit www.face book.com/VFWPost7012 or www.vfwpost7012.org.

The Patrick Organization now offers services tailored to seniors. After years of working in the financial services industry, Michael J. Patrick, founder and CEO of The Patrick Organization, realized his own insurance needs were changing as he grew older. This realization spurred him to search for products that were more in tune with those who were now facing retirement. Patrick discovered indexed annuities that would allow him to provide a safe money solution for his clients nearing retirement without the worries or risks of the fluctuating stock market. Patrick touches base with his clients many times a year, and he creates
specialized, easy-to-read summaries for each client to answer his or her specific policy questions. His goal is to help his clients make informed decisions to reach their life and legacy goals. Patrick has been providing customized financial and estate plans for York County individuals exclusively for the last 52 years. He is a Penn State University graduate who majored in insurance and real estate. Upon moving to York in 1968, he started The Patrick Organization by making cold calls and sharing his knowledge about insurance with everyone he met. He soon achieved his goal
of becoming a member of the Million Dollar Round Table and then a member of the Court of the Table. In 1999, Patrick became the president of the New England Life Insurance Company Leaders Association. In 2002, in recognition of his years of commitment to the financial industry and his clients, he received the President’s Trophy from the New England Life Insurance Company. Patrick recently started expanding his reach into the digital world. For more information, readers may visit www.thepatrick organization.com and search for “The Patrick Organization” on Facebook.

The Cultural Alliance of York County recently announced the winner of the first-ever Artist Innovator Award, Ambitious Caban. The $10,000 cash award was presented on Oct. 12 at the SpanishAmerican Multicultural Resource Center’s festival at Crispus Attucks. Caban then gave a musical performance. Caban, born Ana Mercado, is an independent artist from York. She is an entrepreneur, owner of Royal Court Barber Lounge and founder of the annual “Back to School Giveathon.” Her discography includes “Made for This” and “La Barbera.” The Artist Innovator Award was created to highlight and reward the excep-
tional level of artistic talent that exists in York County. Caban was chosen as the winner after a panel of peer reviewers and jurors from outside York County and across the nation narrowed down the search to seven finalists and then to a single winner from those seven. Artists who work in any medium and live in York County are invited to create a profile of their work at www.york365.com in order to be considered for next year’s award. For additional information on the award, including how to be considered in 2021, readers may visit www.culturalyork.org/ artistinnovatoraward. Readers may contact rita@culturalyork.org or 717-812-9255 with any questions.

WellSpan Ranked Highly By Forbes
Home and business owners have many choices when it comes to holiday decorating, ranging from traditional to trendy and even off-beat. Each component of outdoor decorating contributes to the overall effect of the holiday display. When shopping for outdoor dĂŠcor, homeowners should always consider how each new piece is going to work with what they already own. According to YCL youth services director Paula Gilbert, the children and their families achieved the goal of reading 1,000 books during the program’s second year from July 1, 2019, to Sept. 1, 2020. Healthy Aging Workshops Slated The York County Area Agency on Aging will host free educational workshops about the “10 Keys to Healthy Aging.” The workshops will be held virtually on Tuesdays, Dec. 8 through Jan. 5, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The free workshops will be taught by a certified Health Ambassador through the Area Agency on Aging. Developed by the Center for Aging and Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh, along with the CDC Prevention Research
Center, this health-promotion program for those 60 and older provides many nocost and low-cost preventative services to promote successful aging. The 10 Keys are steps people may take to help prevent disease and improve their quality of life. These steps are lowering systolic blood pressure; stopping smoking; participating in cancer screenings; getting regular immunizations; regulating blood glucose; lowering LDL cholesterol; being physically
active; maintaining healthy bones, joints, and muscles; combatting depression; and maintaining social contact. Each workshop will cover two topics. Attendees will receive a free resource manual that provides information on preventative strategies. A computer and internet access are required as the class will be held via Zoom. Preregistration is required. Readers may call Megan Craley at 717-771-9610, ext. 1017, to register.

FORMER KNEE PAIN SUFFERER SHARES: “I was looking at surgery… But now there’s no need.” New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries.
The members of Leadership York’s 43rd Leadership Training Program class recently kicked off this year’s program with a weekend retreat.
Twenty-eight individuals representing a variety of businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout York County kicked off the 43rd Leadership Training Program (LTP) program this fall with a weekend retreat. LTP is a nine-month, experiential leadership development program that prepares participants to get involved in the community and make a difference. Throughout the year, the class learns about York County history, services and systems, as well as community issues. Participants discover their individual learning styles and learn to work effectively with others by fine-tuning their leadership skills, enhancing their knowledge, and receiving guidance in choosing and applying for a board, elected, or appointed position. LTP provides access to additional opportunities for partnerships and new business relationships.
The newest LTP class consists of Michelle Baughman, York County District Attorney’s Office; Kara Bowser, York County District Attorney’s Office; Brandon Bromley, PeoplesBank; Lettice Brown, City of York; Jennifer Clemens, Realtors Association of York & Adams Counties; Jenna Ericson, Windy Hill on the Campus; Katina Evans, The Glatfelter Agency; Jessica Graybill, SpiriTrust Lutheran; Drew Heilman, Alexander Building Construction Company; Amy Heim, RKL; Jessica Hoffman, Leadership York; Kelsey Hoke, selfsponsored; Dylan Keller, Warfel Construction Company; Brandt Kingsley, Salem Square Community Association; Koven Leatherman, Graham Architectural Products; Craig Mancia, WellSpan Health; Ebiel Morales, WellSpan Health; Jadira Morales, Community Progress Council; Komal

Leadership York’s mission is to train, connect, and inspire individuals to serve the York community in leadership positions. The organization was founded in 1978 and boasts over 3,900 graduates from its six programs. Those graduates provide leadership to more than 250 nonprofit organizations and serve thousands of constituents in state and local government. Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee? If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… Hello, Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories… and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, December 16th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury (in the Giant Shopping Center, right next to AAA). If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. “Matt spoke with me after I attended their free clinic to alleviate knee pain without drugs or surgery. He evaluated my strengths and weaknesses and set up an exercise program to help ease my pain and to restore my mobility and balance. Now I can stand, sit, walk and do yard work for a few hours at a time, not minutes like before I started. I feel as though I have been given a second chance at my family life.” - Sandra W. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call Callie at 717-304-1520 today. Tell her you would like to “Save your seat for the Knee Pain Workshop.” To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 15 seats… and seats fill up FAST. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and helping you become your “normal self” again. Matt Conroy, Physical Therapist Madden Physical Therapy R066085
