firsthand accounts, Kirkwood’s book reveals the untold stories of the George Spangler family; its 166-acre farm; the ambulance workers, surgeons and nurses who labored to save lives; and the injured who suffered and died at the farm. The program is free to attend, and books will be available for purchase and autograph. Kirkwood contends that logistically the George Spangler farm was the most important farm in the Battle of Gettysburg. His book presents newly-found information about Confederate Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead’s time at Spangler, the Granite Schoolhouse hospital, the Spanglers, the Artillery Reserve and stories emerging from the two hospitals on-site. The names, wounds, and treatment of more than 1,400 men at the XI Corps hospital are listed in the book. Now retired, Kirkwood had a
40-year journalism career as an editor and writer, including work for several local newspapers. He has served as a Gettysburg Foundation guide at The George Spangler Farm Field Hospital Site since it opened in 2013. Bell Socialization Services Inc. has recognized four individuals with the agency’s Personal Achievement Award. Jeffrey Bowman, Anthony Guarino, Hilda Flickinger, and Bernard Hartlove received their awards at Bell’s annual meeting on Oct. 4 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York. The award spotlights people in Bell’s programs who are making strides to fulfill their potential and improve their lives. Bowman attends Bell’s intellectual disability services Adult Training Facility. Over the past year, he has increased the number of friendships he has in the community by volunteering at local nonprofit organizations. He is improving his communication skills by using electronic devices. Bowman has improved his decision-making abilities as well and has made great progress to learn safe food identification and storage practices. Flickinger has been a member at Oasis House, one of Bell’s mental health services programs, for almost two years, always looking to better herself. Flickinger connected with the York County Literacy Council, setting a goal to attain her GED, and now attends classes three times a week and meets with a tutor to improve her educational levels. Flickinger applied for an independent employment position at Community Services Group with
Clubhouse support. She now works weekdays and is saving to move into an apartment. Guarino is also a member of Oasis House, which he has attended since 2012. When he first started, he mostly kept to himself and struggled to engage with Clubhouse members, due to a hearing impairment. Members and staff began to learn finger spelling and other signs from Guarino. He is now one of the most active Clubhouse members, being someone who takes the initiative to make any visitors or new members feel welcome. He continues to use American Sign Language to teach others, especially when it comes to sharing
the weather forecast. Hartlove volunteers for numerous in-house Bell activities, serves on Bell’s consumer/staff committees and the Bell Recovery Action Team, and helped with the department’s first Wellness Fair in September. He volunteers as a disc jockey and has become known as the official master of ceremonies for many of Bell’s mental health events. Hartlove volunteers for National Alliance on Mental Illnesss as a peer, facilitating support groups and various other activities, and actively participates at Oasis House, attending many Clubhouse conferences and trainings.

Lutz Named “Celebration Of Music” Finalist Payton Lutz, a freshman at Central York High School, was a finalist in the Celebration of Music Competition, hosted by Ethan Bortnick, who is driven by his desire to give young musicians the same opportunities PBS afforded him. Celebration of Music is a talent search group that showcases the best young musical talent across America. Audition tapes are sent in by contestants and, if selected, contestants continue to advance in the competition. Those officially selected as finalists are notified and have their profiles posted on the Celebration of Music website.
Payton Lutz
The competition led to a performance at The Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Baltimore on Oct. 24. One winner was selected by total viewer votes received online and in person, and the other was chosen by the producers. The two winners performed live and received an invitation to the Los Angeles Celebration of Music National Competition for another performance. Payton, from York, is the daughter of Mark and Michelle Lutz. Now 14 years old, she started performing in shows at the Belmont Theatre (then York Little Theatre) at the age of 5 and a half. She has been in dozens of shows, and she hopes one day to perform on Broadway in New York City (NYC). In addition to performing at the Belmont Theatre, she has been part of shows at the Eichelberger Theatre in Hanover. She earned a role in Central York’s production of “Into the Woods.” Payton also performs with The Acts of Kindness Theatre Company, which for the past 14 years has given back to the community through its Hearts Through Art. She has performed with Peter Bottros and Shine Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Payton takes vocal lessons in
NYC at Badiene Magaziner Vocal Studio and locally with Lisa Pantano. She takes dance classes in NYC and locally, as well as acting classes in NYC and with Donald McKenn Jr. in Media. She spends some of her summer attending weekly vocal and acting intensives at Broadway workshops in NYC. In seventh and eighth grades, Payton was presented the Leadership Award by choir director Ms. Perko and the school chorus group. This year she is a member of her high school chorus and also sings with the Chamber Singers. She has been accepted into the Central York High School Chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. For the past five years, Payton was invited to sing the national anthem at York Revolution baseball games. Payton also performs and sings at various venues as a costumed character performer and volunteers at the Belmont Theatre. She has also been a student dance teacher at Adrenaline Dance of York. Payton is currently signed and represented by Reinhard Model & Talent Agency. For more information, readers may visit https://celebration ofmusic.com/payton-lutz or https://celebrationofmusic.com.

Brenner Earns Recognition Gov. Tom Wolf helped to honor two members inducted recently into the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ (DMVA) Hall of Fame, recognizing their exceptional service to the department that supports Pennsylvania’s nearly 800,000 veterans and 18,000 members of the National Guard. Retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 John K. Schreier of Selinsgrove and the late John A. Brenner of Mount Wolf are the 2019 inductees. Schreier and Brenner will have their names placed alongside 42 other women and men who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Induction into the DMVA Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed by DMVA and is
reserved for those who have demonstrated the highest commitment to the commonwealth and country. Brenner served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 as a radio teletype operator in Vietnam. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Brenner served on the State Veterans Commission in various capacities from October 2004 to July 2019, including as its chairman. He was recognized throughout the commonwealth as a lead advocate for veterans and their families and for his efforts promoting their support and assistance programs. His
commitment to veterans also included service as the president of the Pennsylvania Veterans War Council. In 2000, Brenner was honored with the York County Veteran Meritorious Service Award. Brenner also received the Lester Wise Memorial Award for decades of distinguished community service. His lifetime of community service includes his work with the Mount Wolf Borough Council, St. John Lutheran Council, Northeastern and Pennsylvania Jaycees, Mount Wolf Eagle Fire Company, Cub Scouts, and youth sports. He passed away in July. Complete biographies and more information about the DMVA Hall of Fame can be found by visiting www.dmva.pa.gov.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Harrisburg Chapter participated in Wreaths Across America on Dec. 13. This year, more than 42,000 service members were honored at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, and a total of more than 2.2 million veterans were honored at 2,158 locations across the U.S. The Harrisburg Chapter was one of 145 sponsoring groups engaged in friendly competition in support of the event. The Harrisburg Chapter members surpassed all previous years’ total chapter sponsorships with 850 wreaths, of which 260 were grave-specific special placements ordered by loved ones. The Harrisburg Chapter volunteers placed the grave-
specific wreaths and took photographs that will be sent to all sponsors. The DAR was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Harrisburg Chapter was founded in 1894 and will locally continue to preserve the legacies of the Founding Fathers and the patriots who fought for the independence of the United States of America. In 2019, the chapter celebrated its 125th year and the launch of a chapter history including biographies of more than 60 Revolutionary War patriots.
