Rotary Club Awards Grants To Nonprofits
Please Vote May 21
Uptown York Rotary Club (UYRC) awarded a total of $3,500 in grants to four nonprofit organizations to help support the York community. This is the first time in the club’s eight-year history that grant applications were solicited from the public. Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD) was awarded $500 toward the education of trainers and handlers in York County. SSD provides service dogs for people with mobility problems, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, hearing impairment, and other conditions. Some dogs act as facility dogs while others provide seizure response, in-home service, or companionship. Bell Socialization Services was the recipient of a $1,000 grant to stock over-the-counter medications and diabetes monitoring kits to help alleviate general physical ailments for adults, children, and infants in residence at Bell Family Shelter. Having cough or cold medicine available for an adult going to a job or housing interview can make a significant difference for the families at the shelter. Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy, part of York City School District, received $1,000 toward an outdoor classroom designed by the students. The classroom will be filled with native plants that will be transferred to community gardens in York city. Students who attend the STEAM Academy live in urban settings with limited access to hands-on gardening and sustainable living opportunities. Through participation in this project, students will be educated on creating and maintaining a healthy community for both the native wildlife and residents of the city of York. York County Literacy Council (YCLC) was awarded a $1,000 grant for materials and supplies for its Partners in Conversation class. The class provides an opportunity for individuals to improve their English-speaking skills

Through Friday, May 31, York County Libraries will reduce a library cardholder’s late fees by one dollar for each nonperishable item the cardholder donates at one of the libraries. YCL Plans Community Conversations
R037584
York County Libraries (YCL) will continue the Community Conversations series at four library locations. Led by Robert Lambert, YCL president, the event will provide a forum for community members to share what they need from their libraries. In turn, Lambert will update residents about the projects and strategic initiatives that the library system is implementing to address community needs. To fuel this year’s Community Conversations dialogue, Lambert is seeking answers from attendees to the several questions: “What do you love about your library?” and “What would 100% success look like for your library?” and “What would it take to get your library there?” and “How can York County Libraries
walk alongside you in your journey in life and learning?” A report summarizing what is learned will be shared with the public online at the end of the year. Information gleaned through past public discussions led by Lambert have influenced library strategic plans. The 2019 Community Conversations are scheduled on several dates and times. Sessions will be held on Thursday, May 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Dover Area Community Library, 3700-3 Davidsburg Road, Dover; on Thursdays, June 6 and Nov. 21, Paul Smith Library of Southern York County, 80 Constitution Ave., Shrewsbury; on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover; and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at

Starting in January, first- and second-year apprentices from York Electrical Institute participated in a community service project to benefit Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.), a nonprofit that dedicates its time to helping cancer patients through their treatments. The apprentices’ project was a remodel/retrofitting of a pole building into an office space for administrative needs for H.O.P.E. The property’s sole purpose is a cancer retreat, where H.O.P.E. can host multiple cancer patients and their families. The apprentices got involved with this project after their peer Faith Kling, a second-year apprentice, was diagnosed with a rare disease that causes leukemia. Grant Supports Green Spaces The board of the Memorial Health Fund (MHF) awarded a $1 million grant for the inclusion of green spaces on the grounds of the new UPMC Pinnacle Memorial Hospital. The importance of green spaces to promote healing and mental health aligns with MHF’s focus on transforming the ways the community addresses compelling health issues, including the complete physical, mental, and social well-being of the residents of York and its surrounding communities. The walking trail will connect the campus and be open to the public, improving health beyond
a visit to the hospital. The reflection and rooftop gardens will be healing areas for patients and their visitors, with the opportunity to get outside and connect with nature during their stay. This $1 million grant is the largest commitment the Memorial Health Fund has made since joining York County Community Foundation as a supporting organization in 2015 and demonstrates the importance MHF places on high quality healthcare options in our community and the inclusion of alternative healing areas. The grant will be distributed over five years.

Visitors to the Teaching Museum for the Fiber Arts and Textiles in Felton tried a hand-cranked sewing machine in the Fiber Room. The museum will host an open house on May 18 and 19. The Teaching Museum for the Fiber Arts and Textiles, 12637 Mount Olivet Road, Felton, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19. The museum, at Shady Pines Farm, comprises historic display rooms with antique equipment that is used to teach classes in a variety of fiber arts, such as knitting, spinning, weaving, felting and sewing. The event will feature animals, including alpacas, sheep, miniature horses, a miniature donkey, and border collies. At the entrance is a newly created fairy house, made from an old tree that needed to come down. The base was preserved and carved by a local chainsaw carving artist. The gift shop will offer birds handfelted from wool and alpaca fibers, along with an array of felting supplies and kits for all skill levels, including beginners. The shop also offers knitted, woven, and crocheted items, as well as roving, yarn, and advice from staff. The shop is a business run by student volunteers from the farm’s youth program, and proceeds help enable the museum to teach the history of the fiber arts and textiles through hands-on demonstrations and classes for people of all ages and abilities. Instructors will demonstrate their art in hand spinning, knitting, crocheting,
wet and dry felting, weaving and sewing. Visitors may sign up for classes, with the help of instructors who will recommend the right class for each skill level. Homeschoolers, children’s groups, businesses, and community organizations can also find information about using the facility for their meetings and programs. The historic farmstead dates back to 1750. The museum occupies the farm’s 18th-century barn. The first floor focuses on fiber, including wool and alpaca fiber; local history; and a display of antiques. The Fiber Room also serves as a classroom. In the middle reception area, different types of looms are displayed. Visitors may follow the vintage sewing machines upstairs to the Textile Room, where they may try out antique sewing machines and accessories. Photos and other displays illustrate the development of fiber arts and textiles through the centuries. The museum is an outreach project of Y.O.U.T.H. Program Inc. The farm is located near Winterstown and is just north of Shrewsbury. In the case of inclement weather, readers may visit www.teaching museum.org or www.facebook.com /teachingmuseum or email teaching museum@gmail.com.
