Diabetes Workshop Slated The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer diabetes selfmanagement workshops. workshops. The interactive program will span six sessions and the workshops will be taught by certified instructors. ease. The program will introduce participants to self-management tools like healthy eating, monitoring blood sugar, action planning and dealing with difficult emotions among others. A companion book and an audio relaxation tape will be provided for all participants. There is no charge for the workshops. Preregistration is required by calling Megan Craley at 717-771-9610.

Boosting The Immune System A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it is also worth noting that pushing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function. Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it is no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system

are both immediate and long-term. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossible. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the immune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. But the Cleveland Clinic notes that manufacturers typically package frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in season. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one

such benefit is its impact on the immune systems. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the precise relationship between exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells, which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exercise-related changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it is important to note that these are just theories, the Harvard Medical School suggests that it is reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle. Men and women interested in boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. The Harvard Medical School urges consumers to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research. The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

Storm Drain Art Contest Posted The Master Watershed Stewards in York are partnering with the City of York, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York to launch the Street 2 Creek Project, a project to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. The project will help raise water pollution awareness using street art. A contest will invite artists to paint environmentally themed murals around storm drains in downtown York. Each storm drain will tell a story so people stop and think about where the water flows after it enters the storm drain. Each participant must submit their original design to drainart.york@gmail .com by Friday, July 20. Individuals must include their name, address, phone number, and email address with the

submitted artwork. Artists will then be selected by a panel of local artists and community leaders. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. The goal is to have three storm drains painted by Friday, Aug. 24, so they can be seen during Yorkfest on Aug. 25 and 26. Artists must currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, must be able to paint their submitted design at a designated storm drain and must read and follow the Memorandum of Agreement found on the project website. York County Community Foundation (YCCF) recently announced the addition of Liz Dellinger and Michael Glezer to its board. In addition, four long-time board members retired upon the completion of their terms, including Henry Christ, Dave Davidson, Michael Hady III, and Bill Hartman, former YCCF president and CEO. Dellinger is the director of treasury management at York Traditions Bank. She holds a degree from the University of Delaware and has served on various community organization boards, most recently as president of the YWCA York board. Glezer serves as the CEO of Wagman Inc. He attended the University of Delaware and holds an M.B.A. from Loyola University Maryland. Already a member of

Myers Receives Recognition

On May 29, Salvation Army of York received a check for $550 from First Capital Federal Credit Union. The amount was the remainder of the total $1,800 that was raised for the Salvation Army through the First Cap Gives Back program, through which a charity is supported each quarter. Staff members sold peanut butter and coconut Easter eggs to members, employees paid to wear jeans on a specific day, and the credit union sponsored a table at the Boots and Bags event. Taking part in the check presentation were (from left) community engagement officer Lisa Barshinger; Maj. Dennis Camuti, Corps officer and area coordinator; and president and CEO Sue DeStephano. The program will support the United Way of York County during the third quarter and Leg Up Farm during the fourth quarter.

Bruce Myers (center) was recently recognized for his work with the Campaign for Wise and Safe Investing. He was congratulated by Secretary of Banking and Securities Robin L. Wiessmann (left) and AARP Pennsylvania state director Bill Johnston-Walsh. On June 11, Secretary of Banking and Securities Robin L. Wiessmann recognized 12 senior citizens for their work with the Campaign for Wise and Safe Investing. Among the honored AARP volunteers was Bruce Myers of Seven Valleys. Wiessmann also announced the renewal of a $120,000 grant from the Investor Protection Trust (IPT) to continue funding for the campaign. The event, which took place at the capitol in Harrisburg, marked a 10-year partnership with AARP Pennsylva-

nia and the IPT in protecting senior citizens from fraud and scams. June 15 marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The campaign is a statewide community outreach program that provides retirees and senior citizens with information on how to recognize, avoid, and report financial fraud and abuse. AARP volunteers work with community groups throughout Pennsylvania to provide their peers with information to protect and grow their money in retirement.

SpiriTrust Lutheran is seeking volunteers to support VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program which provides free tax preparation and filing for qualified individuals. Seven information sessions will be offered to interested individuals to learn more about the program, specific duties of each volunteer role, and the free training requirements. Volunteer roles include tax preparer, greeter, and phone scheduler. Informational sessions will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, and Thursday,
