Fire Department Sets Lego Bingo West Manchester Township Fire Department will sponsor a Lego Bingo on Sunday, Aug. 11, at the Shiloh Station, 2190 Carlisle Road, York. Doors will open at noon. Bingo will begin at 2 p.m., and players must be at least age 6 to play. The community is invited to attend.

The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) is seeking volunteers to tutor English as a Second Language (ESL) and native-born adult students. YCLC provides free and confidential literacy services to adults in York County. Tutors may help their student to study for their high school equivalency test, to learn English, or to reach a literacy goal such as being able to read to their children, securing or improving employment, or working toward entry into an institution for higher learning. Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education to help someone to accomplish their literacy goals. The next training will be held at YCLC, 800 E. King St., York, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Aug. 12, 19 and 26, and Wednesdays, Aug. 14 and 21. Participants must attend all of the training sessions. After completing the training, tutors will meet with their student once per week for one and a half to two hours in a public location arranged by YCLC. YCLC coordinators will

Volunteers Sought For Archaeological Dig Volunteers are still needed for the Camp Security archaeological dig. Exploration, guided by lead archaeologist John Crawmer, will begin on Thursday. Aug. 8, with surface collection followed by metal detection on Friday, Aug. 9. Hand excavation will begin on Monday, Aug. 12, and continue on Mondays through Fridays, except for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. Fire Company Plans Festival Lisburn Community Fire Company, 800 Main St., Lisburn, invites the public to its 66th annual Olde Time Festival from Wednesday, Aug. 7, to Saturday, Aug. 10. Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania has announced that Ashton Waltemyer, 17, of York has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. The award signifies that a Scout has made a meaningful, sustainable change to her community and the world. She earned the award during her senior year at Spring Grove Area High School. Ashton, a volunteer firefighter, worked to restore the Hanover Fire Museum. She organized the installation of new windows and new floors and the repainting of the entire building to bring the building up to code. Her goal was to preserve its original 1980s look, but to bring it up to date for functioning in the present.

Cassidy To Continue Lacrosse Career Tire Disposal Program Held The recent free tire disposal program sponsored by the York County Solid Waste Authority resulted in the proper disposal of 5.6 tons of tires. Forty York County residents delivered a total of 380 tires to the York County Resource Recovery Center, where they were safely

Each year, Leadership York recognizes an alumnus or alumna for their contributions to the greater good in the community. This year’s Outstanding Alumnus of the Year is Delma RiveraLytle. The Outstanding Alumnus of the Year selection committee consists of past recipients of Leadership York’s Alumnus of the Year award and Leadership York staff. Rivera-Lytle is a graduate of Central York High School and Gettysburg College. She has been the diversity education specialist at Central York School District for the past 13 years, where she coordinates an annual districtwide Diversity Celebration. Rivera-Lytle is a 1982 graduate of the Leadership Training Program and the 2009 Leadership for Diverse Schools (LDS) program. She has also assisted with LDS sessions on Latino culture. Rivera-Lytle is a member of First Presbyterian Church of
York and has been married to her husband, Charles, for 30 years. Their daughter, Maria, recently completed her master’s degree program at George Fox University in Oregon. RiveraLytle has continued advocacy work begun by her parents, Dr. Edwin and Delma Rivera, founders of the Spanish American Center of York. Rivera-Lytle’s community involvement includes, but is not limited to, serving on the board of directors for the York County History Center, the YMCA of York, and Latinos Unidos of York. Goodguys To Present Three-Day Festival The Goodguys 1st Grundy Insurance Great American Nationals will be held from Friday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Aug. 18, at York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The event is a threeday American hot-rodding festival featuring more than 2,000 hot rods, customs, classics, street rods, muscle cars, and trick trucks through 1987 vintage. Highlights will include vendor exhibits and a manufacturer midway, a used auto parts swap meet and cars-for-sale area, the Goodguys AutoCross racing competition all three days, an indoor car show, Builder’s Choice Awards
selected by Creative Rod & Kustom, a burnout competition, the Goodguys Nitro Thunderfest, and live musical entertainment. A children’s zone will feature a coloring contest, arts and crafts, games, and more. On Saturday, there will be specialty parking areas featuring the Camaro Corral, Homebuilt Heaven, Tri 5 Chevy Corral, Might Muscle, and more. The Steel Shootout AutoCross Shootout presented by BASF will also take place on Saturday. An awards ceremony will be held at 2:22 p.m. on Sunday at the entertainment stage. Aug. 18 will also feature All American Sunday presented by Spectre Performance, which will be open to American-made and powered vehicles of all years. Participants who enter on Sunday will be able to run the Goodguys AutoCross,

Hair Cuttery To Offer Share-A-Haircut Program Hair Cuttery, a chain of hair salons, will donate back-toschool haircuts to children in need this summer. From Thursday, Aug. 1, through Thursday, Aug. 15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at one of Hair Cuttery’s nearly 900 salons, one free haircut certificate will be donated to an underprivileged child in the community.
