CVS Expands Medication Disposal Program CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 in-store safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated
more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone. CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out additional safe medication disposal units across the country by the end of 2019 as part of a commitment announced at the end of last year to help provide more disposal options in communities. The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for

consumers to find year-round medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 507,000 students across the country, including over 30,700 in Pennsylvania, have participated in the program. General information about CVS Pharmacy is available at www.cvshealth.com.

successful futures by strengthening their business skills, providing mentoring relationships, and engaging them in group sports to develop skills and inspire selfdetermination. LEXI founder April Collier accepted CWU’s donation of $625, which exceeded the $345 Collier had requested for an ice machine. The money came from donations, including proceeds from a silent auction. Collier also catered the day’s luncheon of smothered chicken, ham, and vegetables.
The anniversary celebration also included “We’ve a Story to Tell,” a skit by Cathy Smith. The skit depicted CWU’s early years. In 1919, the earliest form of the organization changed its name from The Women’s Interdenominational Union for Home Missions to Woman’s City Missionary Union and opened the Opportunity Center at 34 W. Princess St. The group offered night classes for a York resident who wanted to obtain citizenship. A kindergarten class was taught by Hester Aldinger, who eventually became the superintendent of Opportunity Center, serving until 1971.

Cancer Centers Honored For App WellSpan York Cancer Centers have been honored for their work in creating a mobile device application that simplifies aspects of the cancer journey for radiation oncology patients. The Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) recognized WellSpan Health with its 2019 ACCC Innovator Award for programs that create innovative strategies for cancer care. WellSpan is one of just seven centers in the country to earn the award. The app allows patients to report their symptoms and severity from their phone at any time of day, and that information is fed directly into the patient’s electronic medical record where the physician can review. If the severity of reported symptoms increases, a popup notification alerts the patient to contact their physician. The app also provides a detailed log of upcoming appointments,
proxy access, and educational videos. It also is linked to MyWellSpan, the self-service, secure online patient portal for WellSpan Health. To download the app, patients should search “WellSpan Radiation Oncology” in the app store on their mobile device. WellSpan Health offers a network of community-based cancer centers, including locations in Ephrata, Gettysburg, Hanover, Lebanon, and York. A sizable addition to the WellSpan York Cancer Center was announced earlier this year, with construction set to begin later this summer. WellSpan also collaborates with the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and the Maryland Proton Treatment Center.
