Astronomical Society To Offer Event The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a public event at the observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Aug. 25. A Solar and Radio Astronomy program will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Telescope Clinic will occur from 1 to 2 p.m. YCAS member Kerry Smith will present the radio astronomy portion of the event and also give attendees a peek into the future of the YCAS’ radio astronomy endeavors. Radio astronomy is the study of unseen radiated energy in the electromagnetic spectrum below visible light. By using radio astronomy, people are able to study astronomical phenomena that are otherwise invisible. Attendees will also be able to view the sun through YCAS’ solar telescope, as well as view it remotely on a television screen that will be hooked up to a telescope. YCAS member Bill Price will present this portion of the event. At noon, meteorologist
Drew Anderson will share how the sun causes weather both on Earth and in space, as well as how space weather may affect humans’ everyday lives. Anderson will also speak about the new technology NASA is using to monitor space weather, what causes the Northern Lights and why they may sometimes be seen in Pennsylvania, and how the inside of the sun works. During the Telescope Clinic, YCAS members will share information and advice regarding how to buy an optical astronomical telescope. The presentation will begin promptly at 1 p.m. If the weather is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. If it is completely cloudy or raining, the indoor activity of a screen astronomical presentation will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, readers may call 717759-YCAS (9227) for notice of cancellation or visit the York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) page on Facebook.

operating in faith and giving God the opportunity to work. The school’s target market in York County includes all families with 3-year-old children in prekindergarten through children in grade eight. Enrollment is not limited by race, religion, or socioeconomic status. The school’s foundation is the Christian faith, but KCA’s staff is able to work with other community resources to provide help related to needs that may arise in students’ families’ social situations. KCA teachers use resources according to each child’s learning style rather than a set curriculum. Students are taught with attention given to their strengths and learning inclinations. KCA’s daily schedule features academics in the morning and enrichment in the afternoon so homeschoolers may choose a halfday schedule that fits their needs for either academic courses or cocurricular activities to supplement their at-home learning. The school offers an option of five full days that includes academics and enrichment, as well as an option of four full days from Mondays to Thursdays, offering academics, enrichment, and assignments to complete at home on the fifth day. Students in prekindergarten or kindergarten may choose from five full-day, four full-day, four half-day, and five half-day options. Applications for the 2018-19 school year are currently being received. For more information, readers may visit www.KCA-york.com. Need-based scholarships are available. KCA is accepting donations toward scholarships.

Storm water pollution is the fastest growing source of water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. More needs to be done to educate citizens about storm water and water quality. The Master Watershed Stewards in York have formed a partnership with the City of York, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association, and the Watershed Alliance of York to launch the Street 2 Creek Project, a project to raise awareness about storm water runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. The Street 2 Creek Project will help raise water pollution awareness using street art. Artists will complete their art at selected storm drains in downtown York. Each storm drain will tell a story, so people stop and think about where the water flows after it enters the storm drain. The goal is to have three storm drains painted, so they can be seen at Yorkfest on Saturday, Aug. 25, and Sunday, Aug. 26. During an awards ceremony on Aug. 25 at 1 p.m., winning artists will be recognized. The event will take place at W. Market Street and the York County Heritage Rail Trail, and the public will have the opportunity to meet the artists, the judges, and the Street 2 Creek group. Readers may contact Jodi Sulpizio at jrb143@psu.edu or Lettice Brown at lbrown@york city.org for a painting schedule. To learn more about the Street 2 Creek group and project, readers may visit www.street2 creek.org.
