Libraries Plan GOAL Celebration York County Libraries and PeoplesBank will celebrate first-grade readers from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 14, during the annual Grade One At the Library (GOAL) celebration. The online event will feature GOAL author Anthony Fredericks and ZooAmerica. This is the first year for Fredericks as the designated GOAL author. Children’s authors Tedd Arnold, Will Hillenbrand, Peter Catalanotto, and Lindsay Barrett Georg have preceded him in this role.

Each featured author is involved for three years, coming to York to inspire children to read, draw, and learn from the world around them. Fredericks is professor emeritus of education at York College of Pennsylvania where he taught both teacher education and writing courses. He is the author of more than 160 books. His award-winning children’s books include “Desert Night, Desert Day,” “A is for Anaconda: A Rainforest Alphabet,” and “Tall Tall Tree.”

York County Libraries and PeoplesBank started the GOAL program in 2008 to get a library card in the hands of every first-grader in York County. The initiative encourages children and their parents to visit the library to discover the array of books, programs, and resources available. The family-friendly GOAL celebration is free to attend and is open to the public. Interested individuals can register for the program on the Event Calendar at www.york libraries.org.

With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history

end getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals,

locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and

New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with See Jim Thorpe pg 5

Jim Thorpe from pg 4 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways

and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9-mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen.com/jim-thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” or “Dear Veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God Bless You” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Area News Anchor Sets Retirement WGAL 8 announced recently that longtime anchor Ron Martin will retire on Wednesday, Nov. 25, after more than 37 years with the news station. Martin has been a member of the WGAL News 8 team since 1983. He rose through the ranks to become the station’s main weeknight news anchor in 2000. Martin currently anchors WGAL News 8 at 5 p.m., the Emmy award-winning WGAL News 8 at 6 p.m., and WGAL News 8 at 11 p.m. Martin led WGAL’s coverage of some of the biggest stories in the station’s history, including the Hanover race riots, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This November, WGAL News 8 will look back at the most memorable moments from

Martin’s career at the station. These news stories will air during the news at 5 p.m. The celebration will culminate with Martin’s final broadcast on Nov. 25. “WGAL was my dream job and I’ve enjoyed every one of the 37 years I’ve been here,” said Martin, “but as an anchorman, you work a lot of nights and now it’s time for me to spend more time with my family.” Martin is a York native who began his career in broadcast journalism as a desk assistant at NBC News in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts in communications, he returned home to the Susquehanna Valley to work as a reporter and news announcer at WSBA radio in

York. Martin joined WGAL 8 and the NewsCenter 8 team in 1983. In 1985, he was named weekend news anchor. Two years later, Martin was named a weeknight news anchor on WGAL. Among the many awards he has received during his career in broadcast journalism, Martin is a six-time Emmy award winner. He has also been honored for his many community service contributions in the central Pennsylvania region. His efforts in this area have been recognized by scores of organizations, including the state of Pennsylvania, the cities of York and Harrisburg, the Harrisburg and York chapters of the NAACP, the school districts of York and Harrisburg, and the Lancaster Urban League.

Habecker To Lead Diakon The Diakon board of directors has named Scott D. Habecker of Hummelstown as Diakon’s next president/CEO, effective Friday, Jan. 1, 2021. Currently chief operating officer and chief financial officer, Habecker will succeed Mark T. Pile, who will retire on Thursday, Dec. 31. A Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant, Habecker joined the organization in mid-2009 as vice president for planning and business development. He was named chief operating officer at the end of 2012, acquiring the chief financial officer role in the spring of 2014. As chief operating and financial officer, Habecker has led or worked on numerous initiatives focused on strengthening the services of the Diakon family of organizations, now more than 150 years old. Among those, he helped to create a strategic plan focused on enhancing quality outcomes across the organization, while also improving financial sustainability and efficiency, and he established a leadership team with broad capabilities and expertise to execute that strategic plan and its initiatives. Habecker achieved improve-

ments in senior living cash flows of nearly $10 million annually during a five-year period while improving overall quality measurements on the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ 5-Star system. Habecker completed numerous financing transactions, and he led efforts to determine and evaluate potential programmatic acquisitions and divestitures. Under Habecker’s leadership, Diakon completed significant renovations and expansion projects across various senior living campuses. He also helped to lead the 2014 creation of Diakon Child, Family & Community Ministries, a sister organization to Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, offering services ranging from adoption and foster care to counseling and programming for adjudicated youths. Before joining Diakon, Habecker spent nine years as chief financial officer for a multi-state, long-term care pharmacy business, during which he helped to complete five acquisitions and three de novo start-up pharmacies. Prior to that, he held successive roles as director of finance, assistant controller and corporate controller for Presbyterian Senior Living in Dillsburg. He

A graduate of Elizabethtown College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, Habecker received a 2006 Central Penn Business Journal Forty Under 40 Award. This annual award recognizes 40 regional business leaders for their commitment to business growth, professional excellence and their communities. Habecker will be Diakon’s third president/CEO. Founded in 2000 as the result of the affiliation and later merger of Tressler Lutheran Services, based in the Harrisburg region, and Lutheran Services Northeast, headquartered in Berks County, Diakon was initially led by the Rev. Dr. Daun E. McKee, whom Pile succeeded.

Work-From-Home Pain? Physical Therapy Might Help BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

At the intake appointment for a recurring issue, I commented offhand to my physical therapist (PT) that one of my shoulders was feeling sore. I joked that the reason could be due to dressing up to leave the house more often after several months of living in pajamas during the shutdown. It turns out that my hypothesis was not so farfetched. “I’m seeing a lot more of those issues,” said CPRS Granite Run PT Olivia Bolen. “I’m seeing increases in low back and neck pain, likely due to decreased overall activity levels because people are out of their usual routine, and (have) poor work setups at home. Sometimes arthritic flare-ups can occur.” Office workers, in particular, may be experiencing pain because after years of regularly sitting at workstations designed

for their specific tasks, they suddenly had to make do with a coffee table and a kitchen chair, a bed and stacks of pillows, or even just a seat on the floor with a wall for back support. For the first week or two after the March shutdown, the makeshift seating might have been fine, but with remote work continuing indefinitely, the uncomfortable seating has taken its toll on some individuals. To stave off issues, Bolen recommends individuals use desks where they can rest their forearms comfortably at 90-degree angles to decrease the likelihood of lifting their shoulders in a shrug when typing. Also, computer monitors should be at eye level so users do not have to flex or extend their necks for long periods of time. “This will help mitigate tightness and restriction through the shoulder/neck region,” Bolen said. “These tips can also be applied to the low

back. Sitting in a supportive chair that allows you to keep both feet on the floor will reduce low back stress as well as fight the urge to lean forward.” If individuals do not have the space or the finances to create an ergonomic workstation at home, they can still par- Physical therapist Olivia Bolden ticipate in positive (standing) demonstrates a range-ofwork habits like motion exercise on physical therapy taking regular assistant student Kelsie Salem. breaks to stand up and move. “It is healthy for our conversation with. CBF Awards Contracts For Trees The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for

trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its

efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as two-thirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing pol-

luted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land. Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County received contracts to provide trees to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in 2021 and 2022.

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) announced a new campaign titled “Make the Healthy Call” in collaboration with digital health company Rally Health Inc. The campaign encourages individuals to make healthy choices to reduce their risk of developing cancer. Cancer is not taking a time out during the COVID-19 pandemic, so continuing to maintain one’s health is an important call people can make. The campaign highlights everyday ways to reduce cancer risk and encourages people to take a pledge to get screened for cancer. To learn more, readers may visit www.takeahealthystand.org. Cancer screenings can help identify a cancer diagnosis early, before symptoms appear, which can save lives. The

COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many cancer screenings being put on hold to conserve essential medical resources and to lower the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus. As stayat-home orders start to relax in many parts of the country, medical centers have begun providing routine cancer screenings again. Rally Health Inc. and Stand Up To Cancer acknowledge that, due to the pandemic, some screenings may not be safe for everyone right now. People should consult their doctor about which of these recommended screenings are right for them at this time. For additional resources, readers may visit www.standupto cancer.org/COVID19.
