During a recent awards ceremony, Pennsylvania Library Association executive director Christi Buker (far left) and PA Forward project manager Brandi Hunter-Davenport (second from right) recognized Martin Library, represented by director Mina Edmondson (center) and adult services librarian Sarah Fretz (far right), for becoming a PA Forward Gold Star Library. York Mayor Michael Helfrich offered congratulations. The Pennsylvania Library Association recently recognized Martin Library in York for becoming a PA Forward Gold Star Library. The PA Forward Gold Star Library Award was presented during an awards ceremony at the library. According to York County Libraries, Martin Library is the first library in York County to achieve the distinction. The PA Forward Star Library program recognizes libraries that clearly demonstrate their integration of PA Forward’s five key literacies basic, information, civic and social, health, and financial into library programming. Martin Library joins 60 libraries across the state that have achieved gold star recognition. Several libraries in York County are currently at
the bronze and silver star achievement levels. According to Martin Library director Mina Edmondson, Martin Library’s adult services librarian, Sarah Fretz, learned of the PA Forward Star program at the Pennsylvania Library Association’s annual conference and set out to accomplish all of the goals and surprise her with the achievement. In addition to Edmondson, speakers at the awards ceremony included Pennsylvania Library Association executive director Christi Buker, PA Forward project manager Brandi Hunter-Davenport, and York Mayor Michael Helfrich. Martin Library is a branch of York County Libraries. It is located at 159 E. Market St. in the city of York and was established in 1935.

Bell Socialization Services Inc. personnel Tony Schweitzer (back, far right), executive director; Christine Adkins (back, far left), assertive community treatment (ACT) program coordinator; Nnebuwhe Ochiobi (front), ACT employee; and Stacia Detter (back, second from right), ACT employee, presented the Pauline Whitacre Community Services Award to Deputy Chief of Police Dave Lash (back, second from left) and Lt. Gregg Anderson from the Northern York Regional Police Department. Bell Socialization Services Inc. has recognized the Northern York Regional Police Department as the recipient of the Pauline Whitacre Community Services Award. Presented to an individual or group that provides time and resources to enhance Bell’s mental health programs, the award was received at Bell’s fall annual meeting on Oct. 2 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York. The Northern York Regional Police Department has worked with Bell’s assertive community treatment (ACT) team on many occasions over the past year, meeting staff members at client homes, parking lots, and stores to help coordinate the safety of
mental health clients. Bell recognized the officers for exhibiting compassion and understanding when clients displayed extreme psychotic behaviors and for working collaboratively with staff members and respectfully with clients at all times. ACT program coordinator Christine Adkins nominated the police department for the award. Deputy Chief of Police Dave Lash and Lt. Gregg Anderson accepted the award. Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a human services agency based in York that provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and families that are homeless.
