Theatre Arts for Everyone (TAFE) will present “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 700 E. Market St., York, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, and at 3 p.m. on Dec. 14 and Sunday, Dec. 15. The play is based on the 1971 book of the same name by Barbara Robinson. The story focuses on the Herdmans, six delinquent children who go to church because they hear there will be snacks and end up being cast in the lead roles in the church’s Christmas pageant. The play has been performed thousands of times around the world. Several cast and crew members are performing this show for their second, third, or sixth time. There will be a chance to visit with Santa after each performance. Parking is available behind the church. Attendees should enter through the double glass doors in the rear of the church. Chorale Plans Winter Concert The Wheatland Chorale will perform “A Rose in Winter” concert on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St., York. The program will feature sacred and secular music around the theme of winter. Renaissance madrigals
followed by the national anthem. A welcome was provided by pastor John Dorr, and the program continued with the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation/prayer. Stephen H. Smith, a local historian, explained the history of the original planting, which occurred when the War Mothers Club honored World War I veterans by planting 400 sycamore trees. Following his comments, Shelly Monk Riedel, who served as the chair of the project, thanked the donors, the landowners, the more than 300 volunteer planters, and the committee members who worked for two years on the project. She explained the signs that will help future generations understand the meaning of this historic landscape architecture. Alexandria Hynoski, a student at Red Lion High School, sang “I’m Proud to Be an American,” which was followed by a standing ovation from the crowd. Vice Adm. DeWolfe “Chip” Miller III served as the main speaker. A York County native, he spoke of the important role that men and women from York County have played in the armed services. He also cited many local individuals from all branches of the armed services who had earned the highest commendations for their service, some giving their lives for their fellow soldiers and their country. Veterans were then acknowledged by the Dallastown Area High School marching band playing a service song medley. Veterans stood as their branch service song was played, and the audience clapped as each group stood. Craig T. Trebilcock, York County Court of Common Pleas judge and retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, spoke about how serving in the armed services has impacted the lives of many Americans. He also shared about his time in the service and how he has worked to assist many veterans through special programs. Trebilcock established and oversees the Veterans Treatment Court. Next, the Susquehannock High School chorus led the audience in singing “My Country ’Tis of Thee” and “America the Beautiful.” Duncan Moore, in traditional Scottish attire, then played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes in honor of all those who have given their lives for the country. Priscilla King, a member of the York Symphony Orchestra, played taps, and Dorr provided a closing. The William Penn JROTC color guard closed the dedication ceremony by retiring the colors. The Rotary Clubs of York, Southern York County, and Red Lion-Dallastown held the ceremony. More than 300 volunteers and numerous donors and landowners worked together to restore 200 trees to this memorial over a two-year period.

Park Announces Winter Walks The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Gifford Pinchot State Park, 2200 Rosstown Road, Lewisberry, will host winter walks during the 2019-20 season. The easy to moderate walks will be led by a park naturalist. The walks will last about an hour to an hour-and-a-half, depending on weather conditions. Walkers will meet at the main day use building in the Conewago Day Use area, off Alpine Road. Group Sets Breakfast With Santa Boy Scout Troop 94 and the Shiloh Lions Club will host a Breakfast With Santa on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 7 to 11 a.m. at the at the Shiloh Fire Company, 2190 Carlisle Road, York. The breakfast will include all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage, along with orange juice and coffee. Sausage will also be available for takeout. Michele Wherley, human resources/training manager for First Capital Federal Credit Union, talked to students from West York Area High School about different careers in the credit union. Approximately 75 students toured the credit union’s West York Branch on Oct. 31. Students learned about various careers in the financial industry and the differences between credit unions and banks.
