Bucks Win Twice After Loss to Hempfield

In the world of sports, winning fixes just about everything. Take the CV boys’ basketball team, with a 64-46 loss to Hempfield on January 20th the Buckskins dropped to 5-8 on the year with their postseason hopes on life support. A few days and two wins later, CV sits at 7-8 with their postseason hopes looking a brighter.
The Buckskins were unable to hang with the Section One leading Black Knights with Hempfield holding the scoring edge in all four frames despite nine different players cracking the box score for CV. Cameron Swinton led the pack with 16points, but Hempfield secured the win thanks to four double digit scorers. Conestoga Valley went on the road to shake off their twogame slide, rolling over Oxford by an 8661 final. Swinton tallied 15-points, but it was Austin Wertz and his 25-points as well as DeMajh Salisbery and his 20-points that paved the way. CV did the bulk of their work in the opening frame where they outscored the Hornets 28-11 on their way to the 25point victory. The Buckskins returned to the L-L on the 25th to face Cedar Crest in their final crossover game, winning 76-57. This time CV built their cushion a little at a time, outscoring the visiting Falcons by five, five, eight and one to collect a 19point win. Swinton (23-points) and Griffin Rishell (21-points) led the way with Wertz chipping in 12-points.
WRESTLING
The wrestling team finished a light but busy stretch where they had only one match but that one match was actually five dual matches in one at the Exeter Blue/White Duals held on January 22nd. CV rolled to a 5-0 mark to bring home the team title with only a 32-22 victory over Downingtown West counting as close. Archbishop Ryan provided a challenge, but CV still managed a 38-23 win over the Philly Catholic school. Add in lopsided wins over Red Lion (40-16), Southern Lehigh (48-19) and the host Eagles (41-20) and you get a pristine 5-0 mark.
Trent Ruble and Nathaniel Kirchner each matched the team’s perfect mark while Luke Morley, Rey Ortiz and Keaton Fischer just missed with a 4-1 record. Josue Marente added a 2-0 day with Zander Rider posting a 2-1 mark. Luke Needham, Abdoul Akala and Jonathan Lopez all went 3-2 while Bryce Bowman and Payton Peace posted the inverse for their day.
BOWLING
The bowling team found themselves on both sides of 7-0 finals, first with a loss to Hempfield on January 20th then in a win over Lebanon on the 25th. Ryan Muckle was the top bowler in both matches with a 670 against Hempfield and a 613 series opposite Lebanon. Josiah Casler posted a 656 series against Hempfield and matched the 592 series by Luke Snader against the Cedars. Snader added a 504 with Jocelyn Ross posting a 586 against the Black Knights. Ross rolled a 475 against Lebanon with Rowan Aisenbrey finishing with a 427.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
One step forward, two steps back is the easiest way to describe the Lady Buckskins last few games. CV dropped their Section One crossover games with Hempfield and Cedar Crest but managed to slip a win over Donegal in between the two losses. The end result is a 7-8 mark with just over a week remaining in the regular season.
Up first was a 51-27 loss to Hempfield, on January 20th. The Lady Knights used the first half to put the game away, opening a 13-3 lead after one with a 30-20 cushion at the break. CV managed to hang close in the second half, but the first half damage was too much. Taylor Hehnly netted 10-points in the loss.
Two days later CV welcomed the Lady Indians to town and sent them home a 57-28 loser. A total of nine Lady Buckskins scored with Hehnly (13-points) and Rhiannon Henry (10points) the only players to reach double digits.
Conestoga Valley finished their Section One crossover games on the 25th, falling to Cedar Crest by a 54-31 final in Lebanon. CV posted a 10-3 edge in the opening frame but was unable to maintain that momentum leading to a 51-24 Lady Falcon advantage over the final three quarters and the 54-31 final. Hehnly netted 12 points in the loss.
SWIMMING
The swimming teams split their last two meets with both sides topping Lancaster Catholic on January 25th after falling to Elizabethtown on the 20th. Wins were plentiful against Catholic as the boy’s won 105-44 while the Lady Buckskins enjoyed an 82-60 victory but not so against Etown where the boy’s fell 12345 and the girls 119-46.
In fact, CV managed just two wins against the Bears with Jordan Holmes taking
the 100-backstroke and Daniel Ivanchikov winning the 200 IM. Holmes added a second place in the 50-free with Ashtyn Heisey (100free), Olivia Sowal (200 IM) and Nastia Ivanchikov (200free) also securing second place finishes. For the boy’s Ivanchikov added a second in the 500-free while Rome Lucchese (100-free) and Connor Ludwig (100-backstoke) also added second place finishes. CV turned things around to collect 16 event wins in the double victory over Catholic. “It was a great night for the swimmers for sure,” said head coach Barb Raasch. The boy’s posted six solo wins with Daniel Ivanchikov and Ashton Reese collecting two each. Aidan Campbell and Isaiah Dentel nabbed the final two victories.
RIFLE
The rifle team split their last two matches to sit at 3-7 with four matches remaining. CV slipped by Wilson 491-489 on January 25th after dropping their January 20th tilt to Manheim Township 582-581. Emily Russel led the way against Wilson with a 100 while Grady Ray just missed with a 99. Ivan Shrom finished with a 98 while Adam Zook and Sierra Land finished with matching 97s. Shrom (98), Ray (98) and Russel (97) led the way against Township with Edison Stauffer (97), Hunter Kleckner (96) and William Roland (95) rounding out the scorers.
