Local Couple Honored By Seminary BY ANN MEAD ASH
“As a couple, we love sharing the gifts and talents the Lord has given both of us with others, especially the nonprofits we cherish,” said Beth Bostwick, speaking for herself and

her husband, Bernie, about the recent Friends of Evangelical Seminary Servant Leader Corporate Partner Awards the couple received at the end of 2020. “We are humbled by this award,” continued Beth. “(We) feel that there are so many business partners and collaborators who are worthy of this as well.” In a normal year, the Bostwicks would have received their award when Evangelical Seminary, located in Myerstown, held its fall banquet, but 2020 was not a normal year. When the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, representatives of Evangelical Seminary traveled to the offices of the couple’s businesses, Masterpiece Marketing and Ambassador Advisors in Lancaster, to present the award. Totally Takeout - Lasagna Dinner Will Be Served Drive-Through Style BY ANN MEAD ASH
ome of the most important features of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner fundraiser will be the same this year. Organizers will still prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties - hamburger, hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce - on the day of the sale. Meals will each include a square of lasagna, a salad, garlic bread, and a homemade dessert. Individual pans of each variety of lasagna will also be sold at a special price. Changes will include the method of delivery for the food and the date the event will be held. “It has always been the last Saturday in February, but this year, we have changed the date to the third Saturday in February,” said Mar-
“This year, (the money we raise) will go into our mission fund and be used to support local, national, and international ministries,” said Sensenig. Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. Those wishing to purchase meals or pans of lasagna are asked to take Horseshoe Road to Industrial Circle and enter the church driveway from the right side of Industrial Circle. Cars will then pull
into the parking lot, where orders will be taken and cash payment will be accepted. Meals will be delivered to each car at the south entrance of the church, and signage will direct participants out of the parking lot. Volunteers at the event will follow CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines for wearing masks and social distancing in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions. Past dinners have raised about $2,000 in funds, which have been used to support mission trips to Guatemala or JAARS in Waxhaw, N.C. “This year, (the money we raise) will go into our mission fund and be used to support local, national, and international ministries,” said Sensenig. Readers who have questions about the fundraiser may call 717-951-9717 or 717-381-2744.

Pathways Program Helps Youths Deal With Loss BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Teens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane
Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They
have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pan-

demic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas
said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Parents or guardians may call 717-391-2413 or 800-924-7610 to schedule a conversation with Kulas or a staff person, who will do an assessment to ensure the program will meet their family’s needs. Sometimes, young people are referred to therapists. “They can continue their therapeutic support while working on their grief,” Kulas commented. All programs are run in English, but Spanish language translation and materials are available. ASL interpretation has been provided in the past and may be again upon request. And if a teenager or adult has questions, program staff members are happy to help. “We will talk with them over the phone, give them ideas to start off with, and share resources with them,” Kulas said. Manheim Resident Will Attend Brown University BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior Eden Addisu had been receiving emails from Questbridge, a nonprofit scholarship program for exceptional students from lowincome backgrounds, for quite some time; however, she had not seriously considered applying to the organization. But during the COVID-19 quarantine, Addisu had more time than she might have had school been meeting on campus. “I thought, ‘Why not?’” said Addisu. The application process for the Questbridge College Match program has been called rigorous. Addisu noted that the application includes four essays rather than just one and that the deadline in September of 2020 of each year is earlier than most programs require. She completed her application for submission in early September 2020, and she learned on Oct. 20 that she was a finalist. More paperwork was required by Nov. 1, and on Dec. 1, she received the news that she was a scholarship recipient and had been matched with Brown University, her first choice for college. Addisu was elated. The Questbridge scholarship covers tuition, room and board, meals, books, and school supplies. Addisu will take part in a work study program during the school year, and she will be responsible for a summer contribution as part of the program. Addisu’s parents came from Ethiopia to the U.S. two years before she was born. Addisu attended Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, and then came to LMHS as a freshman. She has been active in the International Students Association. Academically, Addisu has taken a number of Advanced Placement classes in subjects such as biology, chemistry, government and politics, world history, See LMHS pg 3

Dayspring Plans Open House The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paperand-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten. In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is
held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates principles of selfgovernment, order, and unity. Circle time incorporates songs, the calendar, weather, colors, and Bible stories. Daily art projects incorporate the history, science, Bible, and literature focus. Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation.

Unfortunately for McCaskey, 2, as the L-L League heads into the much of the night was spent in forfeits, leading to a largely uncontested outcome. The prior weekend, CV controlled the mat from the outset of their January 23rd triumph over Penn Manor resulting in a 45-27 win. Keaton Fischer, competing at 138 pounds, kickstarted the Bucks’ success, opening the match with a pin, followed in rapid succession by falls from Luke Needham (145), and Macoy Kneisley (152) to give CV an early 18-point cushion. “We got off to a great start,” praised head coach Trent Turner. “Keaton is having a strong season so far, and Needham and Kneisley photo by Mona Steinhauer bounced back from tough losses At 172, the Bucks’ Nate Kirchner the night before which showed works toward a 5-2 decision over some grit and growth in their Solanco’s Blaine Plastino in Quar- wrestling as first-year varsity ryville Friday, January 22. wrestlers.”

Though the Comets rallied for a few bouts, additional CV falls came in Nathaniel Kirchner’s matchup at 172, and Luke Morley at 113. “Nathaniel Kirchner has been consistent for us. As a freshman, Luke Morley just keeps getting stronger,” added Turner. The previous evening, the Bucks visited Solanco and ended up on the wrong side of a 42-21 loss final. After trailing 12-0, Kirchner put CV on the board with his three-point decision win, and Conrad Dillman, competing at 189, was a Buckskin highlight producing CV’s lone fall of the night. “We may be young as a team, but we’re developing more strength and maturity every match,” Turner concluded. RIFLE Wyatt Stauffer and Grady Ray provided a pair of 100s to lead the Buckskins to their first 2021 victory on January 21st, posting a 492-490 final score over Manheim Township. Edison Stauffer’s 98 and a duo of 97s from Sierra Land and Sovannary Sok rounded out the top five Buckskin scores. CV’s rifle team is a small, but tight group of 14 athletes, with only half of those shooters having experience prior to this year. “If we get our experienced shooters to shoot his/her best every match, we should be competitive this year,” noted head coach Hank Oxendine. The tumultuous season of schedule changes, quarantines, and so much uncertainty has left every team with hurdles to overcome, the Bucks being no exception. “Teams are finding themselves having to shoot ‘double-header’ matches on match day, and our lineup has been affected almost every match,” Oxendine said, describing just a few of the obstacles the teams have had to overcome. SWIMMING CV swimmers found their stroke in a January 21st showdown against Manheim Central, in which both boys and girls eclipsed the Barons for a double victory. For the boys, the night signified their first league win, a 94-61 triumph that featured a CV sweep in the individual events. Freshman Aidan Campbell had a break out evening, registering winning times in two events, the breaststroke (1:15.23) and the butterfly (1:09.14). Connor Ludwig also snagged first in a pair of races, the 100 free (59.36) and 200 free (2:12.4); and veteran swimmer Micah Leaman produced top times with his 5:08.7 in the 500 free and a 23.05 in the 50 free. Claiming the final two individual events for the Bucks was freshman Sam Milheim in the 200 IM (2:38.71) and Daniel Ivanchikov’s 1:01.8 in the backstroke. Leaman, Campbell, Ivanchikov, and Milheim each swam a leg of the 200 medley for a combined 2:07.59 win, and the squad picked up a second relay victory in the 400 free (3:55.82) supplied by Leaman, Ludwig, Ashton Reese, and Ivanchikov. During the girls’ turn in the pool, Jordan Holmes’ standout performance helped the Lady Bucks surge ahead to an 84-67 win. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL January has not provided the season anyone would have wanted for the Lady Bucks basketball team, but they have shown an ability to seize the moment and won both contests they have had the opportunity to complete. COVID-19 protocols and postponements meant CV only had one game in the first half of January, a
77-65 triumph over Lebanon on January 8th. The squad had a bit of rust to work off getting back on the court for a January 25th showdown at Donegal, but after a sluggish start, the Lady Bucks rallied to claim the contest 60-48. With their offense taking a bit to become effective, CV trailed 10-6 after the opening period, but things started falling into place in the second. Led by sophomore Rhiannon Henry’s 15 points, the Buckskins surged ahead and by the final buzzer Rebecca Hartranft and Laela Robinson had joined Henry in double digits with 13 and 12, respectively. Two days later, on January 27, the team expected to host Elizabethtown for a highly anticipated showdown between the top two contenders in Section Two. Unfortunately, only 16 minutes of competition were able to be completed before the Buckskins were notified of a possible COVID-19 exposure prior to the contest and were forced to postpone the game at halftime, sending the Buckskins into another quarantine delay. All of CareerLink’s services are free of charge, as it is funded by state and federal legislation as well as grants. Wechter recommended that anyone who wants to learn more about the available services call the Job Seeker and Employer Help Line, 844-744-8451, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. Bernie recalled that he began a relationship with Jesus Christ while serving his country in the Air Force. Recognizing the importance of sharing Christ with those in the armed services, he is especially impressed with the seminary’s tuition-free Master of Divinity program degree for military chaplain candidates. Bernie also noted the significance of the school’s work to bring the community into conversation through its Faith in the Marketplace breakfast series, which was held regularly prior to COVID-19 restrictions. The program features speakers who discuss “how to let your light shine for Christ in a secular business.” “It’s a very meaningful way to connect,” noted Bernie. Beth summed up her reaction to the honor by noting that her relationship with the seminary has been mutually beneficial. “Working with a client like Evangelical Seminary (that) sees challenges or barriers as an opportunity rather than a threat inspires our team of marketing consultants,” she said. “Our team has been blessed through this positive attitude.” Readers who would like to learn more about the seminary may visit https://evangelical.edu/about/ about-evangelical.
