The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meeting, themed “Spice Up,” will focus on overcoming the winter doldrums by adding warmth, flavor and fragrance to home cooking and craftiness. The presentation will delve into the origins, uses and storage of some favorite and uncommonly used spices. Following a brief business meeting and presentation, a social and fellowship tea will take place. New members and guests are invited for a nominal fee.
Betty Snyder, Margaret Sensenig, and Deb Burns, have been organizing the annual lasagna dinner fundraiser at Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Leola, generally held on the last Saturday in February, for a number of years, and the trio runs the event like a well-oiled machine. This year, however, the group had to deal with a dilemma in scheduling the dinner. “There are five Saturdays in February this year because there are 29 days,” said Sensenig, referencing leap year. “We couldn’t decide whether to do the fourth or fifth Saturday.” The organizers settled on holding the pasta meal at the church on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. Each year, the group enhances the atmosphere of the church fellowship hall by adding special lighting, Italian music playing in the background, and a maître d’ to escort See Lasagna Dinner pg 4
Art Of Recycle Flourishes In Ephrata By Ann Mead Ash
When asked how she came to found the Art of Recycle in Ephrata with her husband, Josh Myers, art director Chelas Montanye quickly replied, “It (was) totally by accident.” The story of how the founding of an arts entity, which has a goal of healing and growing the community, involves an undiagnosed medical condition, the inspiration to hold life drawing sessions, and teachers asking for free school supplies. While the story arguably has more twists and turns than a crime mystery, it is all true. Montanye’s foray into the world of art began when she attended the Art Institute of Atlanta in Georgia for See Art Of Recycle pg 5
Lifecycles Riders To Embark On Trans Am Ride By Chelsea Peifer
Looking forward to the annual lasagna dinner at Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church are (from left) Betty Snyder, Margaret Sensenig, and Deb Burns. This year’s dinner, which will feature three types of lasagna, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 22.
This summer, six young men from Lancaster County - ranging in age from 15 to 19 - will be flying to the West Coast to take on a 3,820-mile, 63-day bicycle ride from Oregon to Maine. The Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride is a new undertaking for each of the riders and for Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young men and women of character through bicycling adventures. Retired United States Air Force Col. Lee DeRemer developed the vision for Lifecycles after seeing a transformation of sorts in his nephews after they had conquered a bicycle trip through Montana and Wyoming together. Dr. Grant Woods To Speak At Sportsman Dinner By Ann Mead Ash
The staff of the Art of Recycle in Ephrata includes (from left) art director Chelas Montanye, Josh Myers, Shannon McCauley, Wendy Christie, and Jayda Myers. The organization offers an art thrift store, classes, and free clubs, as well as free resources for teachers.
“Dr. Grant Woods is a wildlife biologist and hunter specializing in deer habitat improvement and hunting techniques,” said Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), who noted that Woods has been a consultant to comedian Jeff Foxworthy with regard to deer population growth and management. Woods’ reputation as a man who loves God, his family, and hunting makes him a good fit to speak at the fifth annual RTCM sportsman banquet, which will be held on Wednesday, March 25, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Woods is the creator of GrowingDeer.tv,

had planned that adventure after his nephews lost their father to cancer as a way to spend time together and provide some of the male leadership they were now missing in their lives. The joy and growth that trip yielded was something DeRemer believed could be replicated on a larger scale. Today, volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. More than 80 riders participated in the 2019 season, and more than 160 riders have been a part of Lifecycles since the program began in 2015. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up ahead of time at www.lifecyclesteam.org if they would like to join a ride. Walk-ins are welcome too. Additionally, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. The inaugural challenge ride consisted of nine teenagers and seven adult guides pedaling 290 miles to Niagara Falls. As the organization has grown, so have the
challenges, with different trips being planned for riders of various ability levels. Conquering the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride will be Micah Clark, 17, of Lancaster; Austin Hillegass, 16, of Lancaster; Zander Malanchuk, 15, of Columbia; Monny Smith, 19, of Mount Joy; Jaerrid Strawser, 16, of Columbia; and AJ Vega, 15, of New Holland. The ride will provide ample opportunity for each of the boys to apply Lifecycles’ motto: “Do hard things.” The riders will set out from Sunset Beach, Ore., in June and finish out in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Four adult riders will accompany the youths, and a support and gear (SAG) van driven by two adults will follow the group. Continental breakfasts, lunches prepared by the SAG volunteers, and dinners at restaurants will fuel the riders as they tackle approximately 150,000 feet of climbing - a total equivalent to more than five times the height of Mount Everest. So it is with good reason that when Monny was asked what he believes the most challenging part of the trip will be, he responded, “The hills. I’m not looking forward to the hills.”

“We have a lot of great conversations after our rides just in the local area,” said Albert. “I’m excited for him to see the country from a different perspective.” Each participant has been tasked with raising $2,000 of the approximately $6,000 per person trip cost to cover food, lodging, and travel expenses. auction and door prize items have been gathered for the event. “We will have a muzzleloader, compound bows, trail cameras, tree stands, blinds, hunting backpacks, and clothing,” said Santiago. “There will be prizes for anglers and hunters, so bring your family,” he added, noting that some prizes will appeal to youths and women. The grand prize will be a Ravin R29 Crossbow. RTCM strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. The organization supports clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping
mechanisms. Santiago noted that by bringing a relationship with God into the students’ lives, the program aims to restore the men to their families. The current RTCM facility can accommodate 12 students. Tickets are required for individuals to attend the banquet. Seating is limited. Tickets purchased by Friday, March 6, will be discounted. Those who would like to register to attend the banquet may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restartministry.org. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Training for the Trans Am ride will not only include lots of bicycling for the boys but weekly gym nights led by a personal trainer to cover cross-training. Micah’s mom, Melinda Clark, said that she is grateful for the avenue that Lifecycles has already provided to reinforce positive character traits and for the opportunity this trip will give to the boys to enhance decision-making and risk assessment skills. want to create an incentive for the kids so they are encouraged to come back multiple times. Rescue Readers meet at the Humane League of Lancaster County each Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for half-hour reading sessions. Each reader must preregister for a designated reading time and be accompanied by a parent or other adult guardian during their visit. Readers are welcome to bring their own books, or they may choose some from the shelter’s bookshelf. Hess expressed her excitement about the program, saying, “I love books, I love cats, and I love that we can bring the two together.” Although the Rescue Readers program is in its infancy, Layman is exploring ways to make it better. “My goal is to revamp it into more of an experience for the kids because currently, there is very little interaction between our staff and readers, and I want to cultivate relationships with the kids and parents who take time out of their weekend to bring their kid in to read to cats,” Layman said. “I

Sure, you probably have heard of students reading to dogs, but did you know that cats enjoy similar attention? “Our adoptable cats appreciate being read to by our Rescue Readers as reading aloud has a positive impact on the cats in our cat colonies, while also helping the readers become more comfortable and confident reading aloud,” said Humane Pennsylvania events and social media coordinator Kylie Layman, who is in charge of the Rescue Readers program. The program is less than a year old and was developed to provide youths ages 4 to 13 with opportunities to interact with the cats in the shelter, expand their reading proficiency, and give back to their community. Seven-year-old Hunter Griffin and his parents, Oanh To and William Griffin of Manheim Township, spent time on Jan. 12 with several felines at the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln High-
way East, Lancaster. The family had a halfhour slot during which Hunter read aloud from the Pete the Cat book “Snow Daze” and the titles in the “Little Critter Bedtime Stories” box set. To said she learned about the Rescue Readers program from a friend on Facebook, and because their family has an interest in the stray cats in their neighborhood, she signed up Hunter. “We’re teaching Hunter to be kind and respectful to all creatures,” To explained. Hunter sat on the floor during his time in the observation room that housed at least four cats. Right after Hunter took his seat, a cat named Wendy climbed into his lap and stayed there for nearly the entire time. The other cats also checked him out. “When she first got here, Miss Izzy Kitty was shy,” adoption counselor Genisus Hess commented. “This is the first day that she’s running out to meet people. This socializing is great for her.” “I think it’s such a good program,” added volunteer Sharon Swanger.

Salad, garlic bread, and beverages will also be served. A variety of desserts and coffee will be offered in a separate dessert room dubbed “Dulce Terrace.” “Imagine you are (enjoying dessert) on a terrace in Italy,” said Sensenig. For several years, the approximately $2,000 raised by the team through the lasagna dinner has helped to fund a mission trip. This year, the church is sending a team to Guatemala from Monday, April 20, through Monday, April 27, to work with Barb and Denny Freed of Orphan Resources International (ORI). “(The Freeds) take teams around to different orphanages,” said Sensenig, who noted that Denny is charged with purchasing food and distributing it to the orphanages. “(Denny) buys foods like powdered milk, cornmeal, flour, sugar, and all the staples they need,” said Sensenig. “They don’t have milk unless it’s given to them by ORI.” Sensenig is not sure what type of work the team of five will perform in Guatemala, but in the past, the groups have helped out in some of the 50 orphanages supported by ORI. Sensenig said team members might be painting or visiting the warehouse to sort food or
donated clothing. “We will take money for whatever they need,” noted Sensenig, who added that the funds are often used to purchase underwear and shoes. “Those (items) are a big need in all the orphanages,” said Sensenig. “We can go to stores there to purchase (items) in the sizes they need.” For 2021, Sensenig said church members are contemplating keeping the mission team stateside. “Next year we plan to stay in the country,” she said, adding that one location under consideration is JAARS’ headquarters in Waxhaw, N.C. “It’s a good fit for our abilities,” she added, noting that the trip will probably be scheduled in late spring or early summer. JAARS is a support arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators that brings transportation and supplies into remote areas. The Waxhaw headquarters offers pilot training along with international language training in Bible translation. Airplane repair services and other technical service areas are also located at the facility. Missionaries are housed at Waxhaw during furlough, as well. Tickets for the lasagna dinner will be available at the door at a set price for adults. Tickets for children ages 5 to 10 will be discounted, and children age 4 and under may eat for free. Takeout meals will also be available. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-951-9717.

graphic design in the 1990s. Living in an area where many of her neighbors spoke Spanish, Montanye began to learn the language. When she was asked to help translate at construction sites, she became fluent in Spanish construction terms. Around 2001, Montanye moved to Asheville, N.C., where she met an architect who offered to teach her what she needed to know to work with masonry companies fabricating building facades. She learned to read plans and began traveling around the country to job sites. After moving to Maryland in 2005, she attended Hagerstown Community College in hopes of learning better ways to help her son, who has developmental differences. In 2007, she moved to an area outside Washington, D.C., where she discovered a town filled with art galleries. “They had First Fridays, she recalled. “You could just walk into a studio, and there would be a model, and you could just sit and sketch. As an artist, I just loved it. It was therapeutic for me. In 2008, at an art festival, she met Myers, whom she affectionately calls “Nobie because he likes to be known as Mr. Nobody Special. “We immediately connected, said Montanye, who moved to Ephrata, where Myers was living, and took a job helping to build the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. It was at this time that her undiagnosed medical problems became an issue. Instead of driving to Philadelphia to work, she decided to go back to her artistic roots, renting a 10-by-10-foot booth in a Lancaster co-op and later moving to the

Stahr Armory. She and Myers began holding art classes. “I started having life drawings, and we would get 30 or 40 people at these workshops, Montanye said. Working with a ballet school, she was able to have models hold ballet poses for artists to draw. “They were gorgeous, recalled Montanye. “I had never seen a life drawing workshop where there were ballet dancers doing poses. In 2012, the first Art of Recycle opened at 27 N. State St., Ephrata. “We taught children’s and adult art workshops, Montanye said. “We had a craft castle, and after school, children would come and we would have games, snacks, and crafts for them. It was a lot of fun. The store sold donated art supplies, which attracted teachers from urban areas who asked for supplies for free. “If (students) come in without (pens and pencils), they can’t do any schoolwork, said Montanye, who learned that many teachers were purchasing supplies with their own money. She told the teachers to take what they needed. As word started to spread, she opened a Free Teacher Resource Area, now located in the basement of the current Art of Recycle at 27 Cloister Ave., Ephrata. Because the Art of Recycle is dedicated to raising the sense of community, people are welcome to volunteer or take part in activities that encourage socialization. “Anyone with a disability is welcome, said Montanye, who noted that area organizations that aid those with special needs visit the store and senior
centers bring memory care patients for classes. Injured workers volunteer at the center as part of their recovery program. A variety of free clubs meet in the evenings, and classes, workshops, teas, and a variety of other activities are offered for a nominal cost. The Art of Recycle has opened a second center in Hanover, and Montanye and Myers have written a book titled “The Art Of Recycle - Creating Community Centers Through Landfill Resources. Hours and more information about the many offerings of the Art of Recycle may be found at www.artofrecycle.org. The Rose & Shamrock Festival and Feis is back, bigger and - organizers hope even better than ever. The offerings for the event, which has drawn thousands of competitors and spectators to the Marriott Hotel, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, and nearby venues, have been expanded, with a second day added to the popular Irish dance competition and an extra day of music at Millersville University’s Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The festival will run from Friday, Feb. 14, through Sunday, Feb. 16. Most of the weekend’s activities will be open to spectators free of charge. “Our mission is to promote (Celtic culture) to the next generation, and one of

the ways we do that is by having free admission,” said festival chair and Paloma School of Irish Dance owner Esther Pujol. “We have one of the largest Irish music competitions on the East Coast,” Pujol added. “The bagpipe competition will be on the fourth floor of the Marriott, with three competition areas. It has really exploded.” Pujol noted that 25 pipers from eight states had registered by mid-January, and more were expected. The separate music competition, which will take place at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, has already drawn nearly 40 entrants. Last year, the Irish dance competition was held only on Saturday and had 870 entrants, with more on a waitlist. To accommodate extra dancers, the contest
will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 14, with 350 competitors. The competition will resume at 8 a.m. on Feb. 15 and run until about 5 p.m. Saturday’s registration has been limited to 800 dancers. “I have students (at Paloma) who will do the Irish dance competition (and) the Irish music competition and perform with the Keystone Fiddlers,” Pujol remarked. “It’s a busy weekend.” The Keystone Fiddlers group was founded by sisters Christy Martin and Melissa Hagy and is composed of their music students. The group plays mostly Irish and Scottish music, and its members will perform as part of an educational lineup on the Heritage Stage at the Marriott. Martin has coordinated the offerings on the Heritage Stage: an Irish See Festival pg 7

Festival from pg 6 Gaelic language workshop, performances by the Harrisburg Scottish Country Dance Society and the Rehoboth Welsh Choir, an Ode to Burns presented by Donald Henderson, a lecture on the mass grave of 57 Irish immigrants at Duffy’s Cut outside Philadelphia, and a demonstration of Irish set dancing. The Temple University Irish dance team will display its members’ talents on Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. on the Marriott main stage. Pujol said she has seen the group perform an Irish dance to the music of “Grease,” so she is looking forward to seeing what the team has this year. A ceilidh - a traditional Irish dance party - will be held after the performance at 7 p.m. Simple group dances will be taught and then called to music played by The Celtic Martins. Additional music groups appearing at the festival will be Cormorant’s Fancy, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, and Fire in the Glen. More than 20 vendors are slated to sell Celtic-related jewelry, hats, toys, shirts, foods, and dance supplies. There will also be a silent auction on Feb. 15, with proceeds helping to offset the cost of producing the festival. Pujol noted that the festival’s nearly $100,000 budget is supported by sponsors, and there are ongoing ways to help with fundraising. One specific need is for traveling trophies that are awarded to champions of the feis (competition). While admission to the festival is free, tickets will be required for admission to watch Hold Fast and Barleyjuice perform on the Marriott main stage at 6 and 7:30 p.m. respectively and to attend the Seasons concert at Tellus360 at 8 p.m. All three concerts will take place on Feb. 15. Additionally, the Glengarry Bhoys will perform at the Ware Center at 2 p.m. on Feb. 16, and admission will be charged. Tickets for each concert may be purchased by following the links at www.roseandshamrock.org/schedule. For more information about the festival, readers may visit www.roseand shamrock.org.

Claiming two-out-of-three of their final contests, the CV boys’ basketball team cranked up their intensity in the final weeks of the season, culminating in an overall 7-15 record. While their final matchup of the season slipped out of reach, 74-58 in favor of the Lebanon Cedars last Tuesday, February 4, the two games leading up to it resulted in back-to-back triumphs for the Bucks. On Monday, the Bucks’ final
homecourt appearance produced a 60-54 topping of Lampeter-Strasburg and also served as senior night, with one of club’s five seniors, Bradley Stoltzfus, leading all scorers with 20 points. “Bradley provided us with an outstanding game and solid defensive effort,” noted head coach Brad Herr while pointing out additional contributions on both ends of the floor. “Austin [Wertz] and Luke [Rumbaugh] were able to keep the defense honest with strong drives and accurate outside
shooting, respectively. In addition, Kyle Thrush provided stellar defense.” Free throw points have the potential to alter the outcome of any game, but not often is a team so well balanced across the board; giving their fans even more to celebrate as the Bucks put together a massive free throw performance shooting a collective 91 percent in a staggering 19-of-21 showing. Stoltzfus was responsible for seven of those success, attempting a total of nine, and A. Wertz produced a six-of-six contribution. Will Stone, Thrush, and Gabe Matos each made it to the line twice and converted every opportunity they were given. Nine CV boys put points on the scoreboard in a Friday night win over Ephrata, 56-48 to close out the month of January on a high note. Stoltzfus once again led all scorers, contributing 23 to the winning effort. Collectively, the club shot 11-of-16 at the free throw line, with A. Wertz topping that statistic with his 80 percent effort, converting four-of-five and finishing the night with eight points. The club will miss the contributions of their five graduating seniors, Stoltzfus, Will Stone, Jotham Ngarama, Ethan Wertz, and Ethan Bredeman who was sidelined this season due to injury. “This group of seniors was faced with a great deal of adversity this season, as we were plagued with critical injuries and illnesses,” reflected Herr. “I’m proud of the fact that they continued to support their teammates and gave their best effort. We owe them a great deal and wish them the best.”
WRESTLING After a superb showing in the Rally in the Valley duals on February first, the Buckskins turned their attention to a midweek showdown, besting nonleague opponent West York 64-12, in addition to their own senior night celebration. At the Saturday Rally in the Valley event, the CV grapplers hosted a total of eight teams, and put together a trio of victories for an impressive team performance, registering wins over Strath Haven (46-18), Midd-West (46-25), and Garden Spot (36-34) to claim the day’s top spot. “It was a total team effort,” credited head coach Trent Turner. “To be able to go 3-0 and win the Rally in the Valley Duals for the first time in three years against some pretty good teams was exciting.” The CV matmen ran away with the first two wins, but their third opponent, Garden Spot, put up a strong resistance, making every bout significant. Three Conestoga pins, provided by Dylan Rider at 113 pounds, Conrad Dillman at 182, and Josue Marente at 195, became all the more crucial in the two-point victory. On Wednesday, the team produced a dominant 64-12 result against West York and paused for a moment to honor their seven graduating seniors; David Dariychuk, Edwin Hernandez, Tyler Jordan, Cameron Kistler, Leo Marente, Vu Nguyen, and Taylor Sheaffer. “This group has risen to the occasion to help provide some leadership to our late season success. Some of them have been wrestling for a long time in our program while a few are relatively

new to the sport in just the last few seasons,” commented Turner. “I’ve appreciated all of their unique contributions to our program’s success during their time as Conestoga Valley wrestlers. Hopefully, they are prepared to be ‘Life Champions’.” Six CV grapplers earned falls in the landslide victory, started by Dillman in the opening bout at 182 pounds followed by five more from J. Marente (195), Jesse Lonon (285), Kistler (132), Nate Kirchner (152), and Sheaffer (160). SWIMMING While gearing up for the League Championships, the Buckskins made the most of their final regular season dual meet of the season held on January 31st, with both boys and girls surging ahead of Manheim Central for one final league victory. The boys picked up their second league win, 79-61, with CV swimmers Joshua Proch and Micah Leaman raking in the points with four wins apiece. For Leaman, it was the 200 and 500 free that garnered a double dose of individual wins, clocking a 1:54.48 and 5:15 respectively. Proch captured the top spot in both the butterfly (1:00.76) and the backstroke (1:06.98) giving him a pair of individual wins. To complete their quad-win night, both swimmers swam a leg of CV’s two winning relays joined by Daniel Ivanchikov and TJ Conlin in the 200 medley (1:55.72), as well as Dylan Reeser and Ivanchikov for the 400 free (4:07.09). Conlin also picked up the best time in the 50 free (24.57), and sophomore Ethan Proch pulled in first place points in the 200 IM registering a time of 2:46.71. The girls’ team topped Manheim

Central by an even larger margin, cruising ahead to a 107-48 final, sweeping the relays and snatching up six individual event wins. Sarah Marston pulled in top points in the 200 free (2:00.61) and the backstroke (1:10.02), in addition to contributing to two relay wins. Karli Raasch also accrued a doubledouble with individual wins in the breaststroke (1:11.15), and 200 IM (2:17.08), along with a pair of relays. Kyla Pham had the night’s best butterfly time of 1:19.45, and Jordan Holmes won the 500 free in 5:49.72. Kylynn Frankford held the distinction of swimming a leg in all three of the victorious relay events joined by Raasch, Marston and Pham in the 200 medley (2:08.97); Ashley Nolt, Kramer, and Raasch in the 200 free (1:55.83); and thirdly teaming up with Holmes, Pham, and Marston in the 400 free (4:26.43). BOWLING Buckskin bowling has built momentum all season, and the scores of recent matches reflect their efforts, garnering a 5-2 win over the Lebanon Cedars to close January on a high note followed by a 5-2 loss to Manheim Township, Wednesday, February 5. Facing the Cedars in the final match of January, the Bucks had previously claimed individual game wins, but had yet to claim a League match victory. Supporting each other and rising to their potential, the team got the job done after combining impressive numbers to take the first two games of the match. Frontrunner Robbie Jack has set the standard all season for the Buckskin squad, and the Thursday night triumph was no exception with Jack’s 244-213-209 series paving the way. In order to claim the overall victory

though, the club needed a true teameffort, and that’s what they got, with contributions such as Luke Tucsnak’s 202 roll in game one. “Luke has so much potential and has truly contributed to the recent successes, Coach Doug Davison said of the team’s lone senior. Haley Jack, a freshman, put together the team’s second highest series of the day, reaching a total of 592 (172-234-186), and junior Annabel Whitton supplied consistency with a strong set to come up with a 505 series (154-161-190). The win didn’t catch Coach Davidson off guard, as he has witnessed the strides made all season by the entire crew and was anticipating the reward. “We have improved so much, celebrated Davidson, pointing out the team’s current average is at its highest of the season at 829, approximately 35 pins better than at any other checkpoint of the season. “Which is where we want to be with the individual
tournaments approaching, he added. Though Wednesday’s matchup against the Township awarded the Blue Streaks the overall win, the Bucks still grabbed some points with a game win, led by R. Jack’s series of 187-222-194. As the team portion of the season winds down, the journey is far from over on the individual front, with several CV bowlers pushing to earn their way into district and regional postseason tournaments. “All are bowling well and improving, summarized Davidson, expecting several bowlers to extend their seasons in the coming weeks. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With the season winding down, the Lady Bucks put an end to their league victory drought with last Tuesday’s 46-44 win over the Lebanon Cedars, and the young, hard-working squad delighted their fans with the one-possession victory in their final home court showdown of the season.

Taylor Hehnly and Savannah Byers blazed the way to victory leading all scorers with 16 and 15 points respectively. CV held a 25-16 lead at the half, but Lebanon mounted a substantial third-quarter comeback, outscoring the Bucks 22-10 in the period, to goahead by three heading into the final eight minutes. A tenacious Buckskin crew wasn’t about to let the opportunity slip away that easily, and rallied for 11 fourth quarter points while holding the Cedars to a mere six, just enough to edge ahead for the win. Laela Robinson added an additional nine points to the CV cause, including a high-pressure two-of-two showing at the line made all the more critical by the one-possession outcome.
Fittingly, the night held additional reason to celebrate as a time to honor the Buckskins’ lone senior, Byers, whose contributions all season have been Photo by Mark Palczewski immeasurable both on and off court. “Savannah Byers has really been Austin Wertz handles the ball for the Buckskins during their great working with our younger play- 60-54 victory in last Monday’s nonleague contest with Lamers and being a positive leader, head peter-Strasburg. coach Bill Moore said of the senior. Food and Beverage The Importance Of Food Safety Certification
Until the latest change, retail food facilities were required to have a Certified Food Protection Manager available during inspection, even if it was just someone who could go to the facility when called. With the new requirement that the person in charge - for example, a shift manager - be certified, more people will need to have their certifications. “We’re trying to be proactive and making people aware of these amendments so that we have plenty of people that are certified,” Reed said. Certification must be renewed every five years. PDA recognizes manager certification programs offered by five organizations. Penn State Extension offers local classes for the PDA-approved ServSafe program from the National

interested in the possibility of a career change,” Reed said. “I know a lot of employers do value certification, to the point that they will send large groups of employees to classes at one time.” Along with potentially helping someone obtain a job in food service, the ServSafe program provides valuable knowledge for use in other contexts too. “It’s information that you can apply even at home so that (you can) make sure you are preparing food safely for your family or (when you are) volunteering in the community,” Reed commented. The exam must be taken in person, however. Accommodations for people with disabilities are available through the NRA. Sometimes accommodations might include having more time to complete an exam or having the exam read aloud by someone without a food safety background. “There are ways (we) will work with individuals to help them succeed,” Reed said. Exams are available in English as well as Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French Canadian, and large-print English. Classes taught in Spanish are available in Kennett Square, although Reed noted that she has a bilingual program assistant who can teach the class in Spanish in Lancaster. Working in food service involves much more than asking “Would you like fries with that?” Food service workers may be employed in grocery stores, retirement communities, schools, office building cafeterias, restaurants, and anywhere else that qualifies as a retail food establishment as defined by law. One of the top priorities of all food service workers is to keep consumers safe. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created a model food code, which is updated every four years, and states can create their own based on the model. According to Penn State Extension, the FDA Food Code provides updated sciencebased guidance and recommendations on how to handle food safely in order to reduce or prevent foodborne illnesses. Until recently, the FDA Food Code required that one person within a food service operation be a Certified Food Protection Manager. The new update, announced in February 2018, now requires that the person in charge of a facility be certified. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), which oversees the state’s food code and the Food Employee Certification Act, adopted the update and declared the change in certified managers to go into effect in 2020. “We have research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that shows when we have a (certified) person on duty at all times, the risk of foodborne illness is reduced,” said Stacy Reed, senior extension educator with Penn State Extension. “Prevention of foodborne illness is a big deal.
About 48 million people get sick (from a foodborne illness) each year, and that leads to over 128,000 being hospitalized. That means one out of every six people will get sick from a foodborne illness (annually). An estimated 3,000 people pass away from a foodborne illness every year.”
